Third consecutive mountain stage, though this time it’s an easier stage. Less than 150 kms, and only one important climb. Not a one-climb-stage, because there’s a Cat.2 climb 40 kms before the finish in Aramon Formigal, the climb where the stage will finish.
Silvio Herklotz is on the race lead with a 25-second gap to Phinney and 43 to Madrazo, but he doesn’t look like losing it anytime soon, coming from back-to-back stage wins, for a total of 4 wins in the last 6 days!!
Only one early breakaway has taken a stage win so far in this race, when Calmejane won in Casteldefells three days ago, and a mid-stage attack by Marquez in Lujar are the only 2 stages that haven’t been won by either sprinter or GC riders. To change that, 11 riders form the biggest breakaway group so far in the race
Alarcon (17th GC +23’28, KoM Leader)
Galta (20th GC + 28’21, 2nd KoM)
Majka
Smith
van der Hugenhaben (36th GC +49’)
Sakalou
Saggiorato (34th GC + 48’)
Figueiredo
Laengen
Bartl
Kunshin (27th GC + 39’)
Alarcon didn’t want to waste any opportunities of scoring points, and was first in a Cat.3 climb, ahead of Galta. Other two riders joined the breakaway, with Stetina and Egger attacking before this climb
Puerto de la Foradada - Cat.3
Alarcon 6 Galta 4 Bartl 2
With 54 kms to go riders are starting the first proper climb of the day, Puerto de Cotefablo. The breakaway chances are slim, given that Puma has never allowed them to have a gap higher than 3 minutes, and right now is just 2’20
In this climb Alarcon keeps increasing his lead over Galta, as he seems unbeatable in the fight for KoM points right now. The high pace that Puma is putting in the bunch is making that only 80 riders remain in the bunch after this climb
Puerto de Cotefablo - Cat.2
Alarcon 10 Galta 8 Stetina 6 Majka 4 Egger 2
With 22 kms left, the actual climb to Formigal hasn’t started yet, but in a “repecho” a couple of kms before, Tenorio and Cattaneo decided to make a move. Intxausti and Úran saw it and joined them, with Herklotz being attentive together with Nerz, his best climbing domestique. In the bunch, Gazelle is trying to reduce the gap with their domestiques.
With these moves, the breakaway really has no chance to win today, as they’ll start with less than 2 minutes the final climb
Karnulin with a massive effort to close the gap given that Nerz was pushing really in the group ahead, in the moment that the climb to Formigal actually starts. 17 kms at 4% (there are some downhill zones in the climb that lower the average). The breakaway group is just 1’30 ahead of the bunch
With 9 kms to go, some riders are starting to get dropped from the breakaway, like Figuereido, Van der Hugenhaben or Laengen. In the bunch Nerz and Arndt are setting a high pace. This isn’t a climb to make big differences given that there aren’t big slopes, just a steady climb where you might want to attack just in the final 2-3 kms or even wait for the sprint
And just as i said that... attack of Taylor Phinney! Meanwhile, Alarcon had broke away from the rest of the breakaway, which would be important in Phinney, as only Martin and Barguil tried to follow, as they sneaked through the breakaway riders, confusing Puma riders
Barguil couldn’t hang on Phinney’s wheel, dropping back to Herklotz group, where the race leader is on charge of the chase himself, as their team-mates are longer around.
Phinney is going really strong, as Martin struggles a lot to stay on his wheel, and is quickly reducing the gap to Alarcon, which is 25 seconds, with less than 5 kms to go!
Herklotz enters the “Beast Mode” catching Phinney and then dropping the rest of the bunch except for the American and Martin, who can’t believe he’s still in that group
What an attack by Herklotz! Only Phinney can follow him, and with 3 kms left, they are already passing through Alarcon like he was an spectator! Behind them, Marquez has attacked from the group of favourites, but couldn’t bridge the gap to leading duo, while Martin is back in that group
The Flamme Rouge in sight and Phinney is leaving a small to Herklotz! He’s not anymore glued to his wheel!
A really passive group of favourites, as the gap to Herklotz/Phinney rises to almost 50 seconds. Madrazo is losing his chances to win the race and he’s not doing anything about it...
Final km for these two riders that will fight for the win here in Formigal! Herklotz looking for a third win in-a-row, fifth in the race, while Phinney looks for his second. And by their gestures, it might be a drag race to the end
500 metres to go and the finish line it’s in sight for both riders! Herklotz opens the sprint first as he’s in the first position, Phinney glued to his wheel!
Meanwhile, the gap to Madrazo’s group is now over the minute
But Phinney cracks with 300 metres to go! He’s not sprinting anymore, and Herklotz doesn’t slow down
So Silvio Herklotz wins in Aramon Formigal, to get his third stage win in three days, and fifth in the last 7 days. He’s dominating this race, and looking more and more like he’s going to get his first Grand Tour win at the age of 24
Phinney gets yet another second place behind this wonderkind. The distance between both will rise to at least 33 seconds, if jury decides there’s no gap between them
Great effort by Alarcon to finish third today after being all day in the breakaway. Just unlucky that two riders were so strong to take away the win from him. And Marquez winning some time to rest of Top10 contenders
Uran wins the sprint for the fifth, as the group loses 1’14 to Herklotz, with Madrazo, Cattaneo, Abal, Intxausti, Kritskiy, Barguil, Martin, Keinath and Tenorio finishing in the same time
Some big lossers today, like Eastman + 2’55 or Schelling and Olivier + 3’49.
Meanwhile, Herklotz goes to the podium to receive his third Red Jersey. Finally the jury awarded a 9-second gap to Phinney in the finish, so the new GC gap is 42 seconds. Madrazo is now more than 2 minutes behind, and would really need a miracle to overcome the deficit with 3 stages to go
