First stage in Maroc and it`s a sprint stage with some waves on the route.
Ciolek on paper the superior sprinter here with Goss following him after a decent season.
Vanderbiest or Van Poppel though also with good chances to grab a stage win here.
Behind those a long list of sprinters that are very similar and mainly seperated by their strength on the flat, which sees lots of quality riders such as Kragh Andersen/Lander/Bonifazio, ToA legend Granjel Cabrera or a level below also Roelandts and the Lierse duo Gaviria/Pelucchi.
Next to the race itself it`s also one of the last chances for some teams to stay in the PT/PCT division. The main fight surely is between Lierse and Carlsberg here as the third team, Netia, isn`t participating. So a short look onto their rosters to begin the race with as they are seperated by less than 100 points.
Carlsberg comes with the faster sprinter on paper in Kragh Andersen and Kwist as support. Though Lierse has the better train and in Gaviria a rider with the biggest acceleration and hill skills. Pelucchi, Bonifazio, Marezco are excellent leadouts.
Basically one point for both with maybe Lierse depth wise having a small advantage.
GC wise it`s difficult without a top rider for each. Garby as best climber but low hill skills and Senni as most complete stage racer but far from the top riders. So also here pretty equal and no clear winner. So who will win the direct duel after 9 stages and will Netia even win the fight of the three without participating?
One level higher in the PT relegation fight, it`s not as close, though also not uninteresting as many teams participate. Tinkoff is on the safe spot right now having almost 300 points advantage over Desigual and UBS. Basically those 3 teams will fight it out with Tinkoff having the advantage of the gap.
Rider wise UBS might be strongest having the only sprinter in Reinhardt with outsider chances and Schelling for the GC. Desigual with Nibali for the GC while Tinkoff comes with 2nd tier riders but might surprise in the hills with Chernetskiy as one of the better puncheurs.
Rosas might be a decent time trialist but he surely was not expecting to make a 30-40km solo today. Nobody wanted or was able to follow him early on. Probably the sprinter teams wanted the early sprint and didn`t allow a lot. Surprisingly Reinhardt then took 2nd behind him with Vanderbiest in 3rd. And as the gap was still small afterwards he finally got some other riders joining him in:
Tanfield
Daniel
Lamoureux
It was a desperate attempt today as the sprinter teams never would have allowed a break to take the chance on the leader jersey!
Surprisingly Rosa in the end still the strongest and he gives it all with 5km to go but the peloton is faster and soon to catch him as well.
Aker for Ciolek working a lot and this also included their GC rider Beltran on the final 30-40 km!
The Minions really dominate todays stage so far. Rosas still in front and now their sprint train also opens a gap to the others. Very chaotic due to this situation. Schinker, Avila and Drapac in the train ahead with all the others behind. Ciolek at least has Dakteris ahead with Scully trying to join in late.
Indosat for Goss likely the 3rd train but it`s not organized yet with Goss only being the 6th of their riders in the peloton. Still in the first 20 positions.
Rosas still in the lead being chased by the Drapac train. So 4 Minions leading the race right now!
Let`s try to identify some of the sprinters now.
Then we have in this order:
Polivoda - Dakteris
Bonifazio - Lay
Reinhardt - Lander - Ciolek + Scully
And then behind those in 1-2 lines also Croket, Vanderbiest, Kragh Andersen and the Indosat train of Ji-Speirs- Goss and Granjel Cabrera/ Roelandts next to them.
So who is missing? Surely Van Poppel as big name and also Lavoine. Bennett might be another one while the bigger surprise is Lierse going for Bonifazio today! Pelucchi might be their most consistent in the past while Gaviria should be their strongest probably.
A bit more than 1km to go and Rosas still (outside of the screen) a bit in front while the Drapac train is about to be caught.
First riders going the long sprint are Bonifazio and Lay. Both might surprise the big names today if they don`t follow soon. Aker at least found some organization and Ciolek not far behind.
On the left also Goss having found the sprinter legs now with Speirs still ahead. They have passed Bonifazio, who went too early. Behind them Kragh Andersen has picked a good wheel it seems.
In the middle Ciolek has lost Scully's wheel and so Lay still going strong on the far right with Drapac being in the first position of the sprinters but already in the wind for some time.
And Rosas still leading anyway but being a lot slower.
500m to the line it`s over for him. Drapac and Goss as first riders are next to him and so much faster.
And also Ciolek is in their slipstream with Roelandts, Kragh Andersen being fast on the other side of the road while Lay as well now is being passed.
Those are the only riders, who can still win.
Goss in first position with 200m to go. Then Kragh Andersen and Drapac with Ciolek coming around as well.
Roelandts and Reinhardt a bit behind.
Close one! Kragh Andersen vs Goss vs Ciolek but it seem the Dane has it!
And he knows best and celebrates! What a way to start the race for the team, that might have needed it the most!
Goss still 2nd with Ciolek in 3rd ahead of Roelandts, Drapac and Reinhardt.
Vanderbiest "only" 7th with Granjel Cabrera following. Pelucchi out of nowhere up to 9th ahead of Lavoine. So Lierse has lost on Carlsberg today and might have decided for the wrong lead sprinter. Pelucchi being the better one in the end might give hope that they change leadership in the next stages while Gaviria was just riding in the second half today until the end.
