Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 2
Tamijo
Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 2: Foligno - Ortezzano 134.2 km

Welcome to the first real stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2018, we start in Foligno, from there moving into the Apennine Mountains heading for a finish in Ortezzano,

No favorite list for this stage, sorry.

The route starts with a long accent up to a category 2 climb near Colfiorito, but it is the last very hilly 35 km that could potentially make a difference, including the brutal 1.4 km climb up to Ortezzano at 9.5% and the final kilometer up to the line also with sections above 10%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Manakov upens the stage with an early attack, joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink, but with a stronger group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kumara, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Siriwardena, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Jungels and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan closing in, everything is close down by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Manakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink and now also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones tried again and this time gets away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones on paper clearly best suited for this terrain

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink attacks from 2 km for the KoM, immediately dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Manakov, but in the end it is the better climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones, winning the KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/3.jpg

In the peloton it is mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Festina – Dexia taking responsibility protecting the leader jersey.

When the breakaway gets to the first intermediate sprint, the distance is 2’46 with 92 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Manakov wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/4.jpg

The first of the small uncategorized hills between the point sprints, takes the breath out of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Manakov, and he is caught by the peloton with 67 km left.

In the peloton now some help from other teams, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Rosch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Benito but it is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Festina – Dexia doing most of the work in the peloton.

Distance to the duo left out in front, 1’24”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/5.jpg

More and more riders take part in the chase pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Dunne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Puccio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Skala and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Ackermann most active on this section of the race.

The pace is harder and some riders are left behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Bakari and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart the first to struggle.

With 45 km left the breakaway get caught.

On the uncategorized climb up to the 2nd sprint we see the big guns move forward, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi in 2nd position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, all amongst the first 10 riders.

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero pulling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero wins the intermediate sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, the peloton now reduced to 65 rider.

There are no actual attacks on the last KoM climb up to Ortezzano, but a devastating hard pace set by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero, splitting the peloton over the top. Only 12 riders make the split:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Felline, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi.
About 17 km left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/7.jpg

On the downhill another 6 riders make it back to the favorite group: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen

9 km to the finish line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen also accelerating attempting to close up, no reaction from the others at this point.

There are now 55” down to a larger group of 36 riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png van der Hugenhaben, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Paulinho etc.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/8.jpg

5 km left, now close to the top of the uncategorized hill, now mainly 4 km downhill before the 1 km uphill sprint to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen in front with 26” to a group of 6 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell

At 1’15, 7 riders from the previously mentioned 18 man group, with the addition of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Zakarin coming up from behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin now alone at +2’00”, behind him 34 riders at 2’50”, we have no timing of the leader jersey but he is more than 4 minutes behind an will of course lose it as was expected.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S2/9.jpg

400 meters left for the duo in front
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen was first under the red kite, leading on the up-hill finish.
