The last day before the ITT, and could it be enough to lure out the likes of Skujins, Sagan or Bakelants who would probably like some time before tomorrow? I had this one down as a breakaway or reduced sprint - bonuses could come into play if it's with GC riders - day for a guy like Ulissi, Yates or Kuboki, but that Cat.2 or even the uncategorised final bump could lure out the big GC hitters who would like less time beside their name on GC before tomorrow's ITT.
A welcome return today of the sun! A lovely start here in Bera, let's see who wants to be in the breakaway and give these fine Basques some entertainment!
Stachowiak found himself boxed in but added 2 points to his KoM total as part of the first breakaway attempt. Not quite away yet along with Arashiro, Van Niekerk and Razumov.
Eventually those four, plus three others, make up our breakaway:
Walsleben
Le Gac
Lienhard (19th KoM, 6pts)
Oomen (21st KoM, 4pts)
Arashiro (20th KoM, 4pts)
Stachowiak (7th KoM, 22pts)
Razumov
Van Niekerk
You know the drill: sprint winners up until I have something else to report on!
KoM 1
Van Niekerk
Arashiro
Stachowiak
KoM 2
Stachowiak
Walsleben
Lienhard
That didn't take so long... Stachowiak outsprints Le Gac and Oomen as they distance the rest of the break on the long Alto de Elosua. Stachowiak just 20 points behind Costa now - not doable today but it sets up an exciting stage 6 battle if he takes the next two here!
A mix of Aegon, Moser and T-Mobile on the front so far today.
Stachowiak is too good over the Cat.3 as well. Le Gac and Oomen stay in touch, but the gap is over two minutes to any other breakaway rider now. In fact, only Walsleben and Lienhard are still ahead of the bunch, 2 minutes either side. 56km left.
Bobridge puts in a dig a long way from home! Perhaps sensing De Bie losing teammates, he attacks with over 50km left with Bakelants, Sagan and Kolar.
Geniez and Van Garderen slip away over the top, and there's now 30 seconds either side of them, meaning Bobridge, Bakelants and Sagan are a minute ahead already!
Lienhard and Walsleben are caught by the Bakelants group, who are caught in turn by the T-Mobile duo. And if this situation isn't weird enough, Yates, Alaphilippe, De Bie, Boom and Thurau have distanced the peloton in chase! 3'19 for the breakaway trio to the Bakelants group, 50 seconds to De Bie and co. and 30 to the peloton, lead by Generali and Isostar.
The De Bie group (and Walsleben) have been caught by the peloton, meanwhile Bakelants and co. have 46 seconds still!
A long and impressive effort from Boom sees them re-caught. Just when he isn't enough of an Aegon legend, he may have saved their asses here.
Like a true baroudeur, Stachowiak attacks through the intermediate sprint and gets a gap onto the next climb!
3km left of the climb for the peloton and we see an interesting move: Paterski thinking he can get the KoM lead, Lienhard thinking that moving into the KoM top 20 is an achievement (I agree), Mehr-Wenige thinking that, despite what he learned yesterday, attacking with no real goal is a good thing (I agree), and Barbin thinking he is still relevant to this bicycle race (I disagree).
They can't get away, but Mehr-Weninge slingshots past Le Gac and tries again, and this time is getting some space between himself and the peloton!
Stachowiak crests the final categorised climb 1'49 ahead of the peloton and 1'23 ahead of Mehr-Weninge, who has passed Oomen. With 20km to go, only one small uncategorised climb and a fair bit of descending to go, he could run it close for the stage win if he has the legs and paces himself right!
To his credit, Barbin isn't half-assing his attempt to matter and goes again over the top. He's still a massive disappointment and clearly Kazkakh PEDs were the only reason people thought he was good, but he's trying and you all should respect him for that instead of laughing with me about how much he sucks because that's called bullying.
On the descent, the three escapees come together and lose a lot of time to the peloton. They have 30 seconds with 10km to go.
Bakelants attacks! 600m to the intermediate sprint, maybe looking for some bonuses too if he can catch the escapees! 8km left.
He grabs two bonus seconds and passes the escapees, who are caught by the still-going Lars Boom. Aegon would have relegated like five times from two divisions without his guidance and talisman-ity.
5km left, and 11 seconds the gap. Soon we'll be onto the last climb.
Skujins attacks the climb, using the tried and true tactical method of "attack when you see your name on the road". It's like a cycling drinking game, but if done at the wrong time could be even worse for you to do during a race.
He catches Bakelants with 2.5km to go but stops the attack once he reaches the Belgian. 54 men in the bunch, none of them are Kuboki so we don't have a real favourite for the sprint. The 20 bonus seconds on offer could be very useful!
With a downhill sprint to come Skujins decides to go long from the crest of the climb with 2km left! Van Garderen is in his wheel. Behind the Yank is Dieteren, further proving after the last two stages he has a complete disconnect to his team's tactics and no desire to help his leader. Or he has a free role. But why? He sucks!
1.4km left, Mohoric and Beltran lead but it looks like the winner will be Skujins, Van Garderen, Bakelants or... Costa. I must apologise to Mr. Dieteren who has done a sterling job supporting Costa today.
Meanwhile Vanendert has been dropped. Sorry Kulczyk, this isn't your race.
Flamme rouge for Skujins as he continues to lead the sprint! He's doing very well but he'll have to watch out for the speed of those behind as the road flattens out!
Final corner now, 600m left and some flatter road. Van Garderen and Bakelants have a good sprint on them but can they come around the Latvian?
Van Garderen now looking to come around, but Skujins took the corner very well indeed and sucked 200m out of the American's sprint!
Once again Mohoric must try and shut a gap on a downhill sprint! It could be a big advantage for the four ahead to gain 10-30 seconds via gap + bonuses!
Skujins with a very good sprint, Van Garderen is fast but so is the Latvian, who will hold him off here!
Oooh! Celebrating before the line was risky, but Skujins has enough to take the victory here in Onati! A very useful 20 seconds on the line, and the honour of the stage win for a very well thought out sprint! Van Garderen looking better today and is rewarded with 12 seconds.
Costa did his best to come around but the late attacker Bakelants had enough road into the final corner to stave him off for the 8 second bonus!
Bobridge grabs Mohoric around the neck in the final metres and must be disqualified from his placing for that! Outrageous behaviour. The Slovenian takes 6th (maybe 5th) ahead of Trofimov, Beltran, Gastauer and the Novatek duo Avetsiyan and Klemme. Was there a gap to the front four? Possibly, we'll find out soon.
So no gaps in the end except to the dropped riders such as Vanendert, and finally a relative day of quiet in the GC standings - however Bakelants, Bobridge and others have all expended energy for relatively little reward today. Luckily for them it's the ITT tomorrow and that shouldn't matter as much - and for Bakelants maybe he'll be rewarded as the TT is the same as the last 15km of today, much of which he rode solo! Thanks for joining us again, join us again tomorrow for another GC shakeup! Every year it's proven again: There's never a boring day's racing in the Basque Country!

Spoiler
I did not edit the results to show Bobridge in 10th, he really was there in both the in-game and exported results. I think it was a bug that showed him right up by Mohoric. I just said disqualified for a joke
