Just three stages left in the race, and we have an interesting hilly stage finishing in Leysin, after 166 kms of racing. The stage is focused on its final 30 kms, where the riders will have to climb Col du Pillon, and in the final kms the climb to Leysin.
Yesterday in the TT, Andrei Amador took the race lead after his impressive ride, and today he has the goal to keep Silvio Herklotz, currently 41 seconds behind the Costa Rican, behind him in GC after this stage, where the German young star is the big favorite, as he showed in the previous hilly stage in S4, when he won putting a minute on everyone else
After a lot of attempts by several riders, 8 riders form the breakaway before the first climb of the day
Kneisky
Barbero
Boom
Van Niekerk (3rd KoM)
Jaramillo
Carpenter
Lietaer
Prado (2nd KoM)
Prado goes first over this Cat.2 climb, taking the provisional KoM lead in the process, as Van Niekerk couldn’t even get a point, and Egger is on the bunch
The race arrives to the bottom of Col du Pillon, and in the first slope, Boom attacks in the breakaway, and Barbero follows him, as the bunch was already less than a minute behind them
Not really fast pace in the bunch at the moment, so clearly good news for Amador
Barbero looks the strongest rider in the break, as he drops everyone else and gets the full points in this climb. Boom and Prado follow the Spanish rider around 15 seconds behind
There’s movement in the bunch! Hadi’s pace has splitted the group, and only other 5 riders made the split! Herklotz obviously there, as well as race leader Amador, together with Dombrowski, Meintjes and Machado! Ayubowan works in the bunch to close the gap, looking for McCarthy to fight the stage win
But Ayubowan’s effort in the downhill makes both group to come back together with 13 kms to go. Barbero’s gap is 1’40 now
Boom has dropped Prado in the descent, and when Barbero reaches the bottom of Leysin, the 2012 World Champion is already there close to his back wheel. The bunch is still over 1’30 behind, but i still wouldn’t bet against a bunch win today
Hadi is powering away, and Herklotz is the only one conformtable with the current pace, as the rest of the bunch struggles to follow that pace! And actually the eBuddy rider in front is Calmejane, not Dombrowski...
Hadi suddenly stopped, neither Herklotz reacted, and with 3 kms to go, first attack by Meintjes! He’s followed by Machado and Guldhammer, while Amador isn’t sure if follow that move or not yet. Also, in this moment, they are catching the remaining riders of the breakaway, like Boom, Barbero and Prado
And those 3 riders are gone! Though Bibby is amazingly able to join them!
Monsalve pulls in the favourite’s group, followed by Van der Hugenhaben and Schleck, while Amador and Herklotz don’t react to these moves yet
The stage win is gone for the bunch, so it will be a fight between Machado, Guldhammer, Meintjes and Bibby for the win, with Guldhammer as the clear favorite with his sprint abilities
Meanwhile, Dekker isn’t looking good, and is on a third group down the road, really struggling to keep up the pace. We also have news that Dombrowski is just a few spots ahead of Dekker, in the same group, potentially losing a lot of time today
Machado and Guldhammer are opening a bit of a gap to Meintjes and Bibby, a gap that with less than a km left, could be decisive in the stage win fight
Is Amador attacking from the favourites’ group? Might be a great move by him, anticipating any moves that might come from Herklotz, while also not allowing Guldhammer’s group to get so much time. Also, in the back of this group, it looks like Morton could be about to get dropped!
Machado and Guldhammer are sprinting for the win in Leysin with 400 metres to go! Neither Meintjes or Bibby will be a factor in their battle
Big surprise, as Guldhammer can’t hold Machado’s wheel with 300 metres to go!
So Tiago Machado gets a shocking win in Leysin! The Portuguese champion showing the “young kids” how to win with this amazing performance today!
Second place for Guldhammer, who even lost a 10 extra seconds to Machado in the end
Meintjes wins the battle for third place to Bibby, though both will end losing 20 seconds
Amador leads home the favourite’s group, with Schleck, Herklotz and Yates right behind him, 47 seconds after Machado arrived
+ 1’12 for Wellens, Van der Hugenhaben, Quintana and Monsalve
+ 1’34 for Morton, Kangert
+ 1’49 for Hirt, Ricco
There comes Dombrowki’s group, who ends up losing 2’25 to Machado and 1’40 to Amador
And Dekker loses even more time, as he crosses the line 3’30 after Machado did
Really strong performance by Machado today, who jumps all the way to the second place in GC, just 13 seconds behind Amador, who retains the leading jersey. Herklotz gets down to third, still at 41 seconds, followed by Guldhammer, Schleck, Bibby, Meintjes, Wellens, Morton and Quintana in the Top10
