What a stage to decide the Giro in. 5 climbs of which the last is super steep towards the finish. If you have a day like Amador 2 days ago, you can lose it all.
Schleck has a bit of a gap but can`t feel too safe yet. He needs to be concentrated on mainly Dombrowski and Amador. But also behind him a lot of potential decisions for 4th to 7th or even futher back.
Janse van Rensburg
Sergis
Bayly
Foliforov
Fraile
Kolar
Laengen
A strong one, yes, but very surprising one as no single top20 GC rider is in there, which was expected today. In especially after the last two days. But neither the active Quintana, Choi or Dekker were joining, nor the likes of Nibali, Bibby, Bongiorno, Kolesnikov, Abal, Cattaneo etc.
But while Evonik might have celebrated already, Choi makes the KoM interesting as he tries to bridge to the group. He simply waited for the flat part to end and is soon to go uphill, when he should be stronger.
And it indeed didn`t take long until he is up to them, then passing them and winning the Cat.1 which moves him up to 138 pts. 32 behind Vosekalns and more than enough to grab over the day.
He did wait for the others on the descent but then attacked again to also win the Cat.2 and finally is going solo with more than 80km to go.
2min behind him Laengen, Sergis and Kolar. Then another 45s later the rest of the break and more than 15min later the peloton.
Basically he is close to the virtual lead right now with less than a minute missing! Same as yesterday. Schleck not that much in danger and not willed to let his support work that early. For them the bigger picture is important, which is GC win. But they at least should bring the gap down a little bit as the teams around 10-15th GC apparently can`t do enough themselves.
The next win of 16 points over the long Cat.1 and now closed the gap to just 6 points! What looked like a really boring competition, got some late movement and surely a frustrated Evonik, that likely had believed to win this.
There he goes. After the Cat.2, Choi takes the lead in the KoM ranking! And most likely will win it by the look of it.
eBuddy behind as well made some serious acceleration and now Dombrowski can finish it. 16km left, which is 6km behind Choi but no longer in virtual podium and losing time with every kilometer.
Dombrowski is up there with couple of riders: Morton, Machado, Alarcon and Lecuisinier, who is one of the strongest in the last week.
Behind Schleck with Amador, Cattaneo, Hirt, Dekker, Abal and Quintana.
Henao and Guldhammer solo next ahead of the first "peloton" around Nibali, Bibby, Bongiorno etc.
6,6km and it`s the steepest climb left. Almost 13% right now and with the groups coming back together, it`s the mountain goat Alarcon attacking. Maybe last chance to get a top5 result and immediately Lecuisinier is following.
This acceleration first sees Quintana and Dekker struggling and a bit later also Henao Montoya and Guldhammer again with Abal, Cattaneo sitting at the end of the top group.
And also Schleck was sitting dangerously far behind, which must be motivation enough for Amador to follow Alarcon/Lecuisinier and behind him also Dombrowski!
Schleck is not having his best day but it`s just 4,6km left and he has some gap.
Morton, Machado, Cattaneo and Abal next to him and also Guldhammer/Henao back up to them, which shows the lack of speed right now.
Choi can celebrate! Stage Win! KoM Win! And gaining couple of spots! Not the top5 surely, maybe neither the top10 but at least a few spots.
Alarcon, Lecuisinier and now also Hirt following next. Later really having a decent race here and often appeared better than 7th overall. He did pass both Amador and Dombrowski on the way forward.
And even though he can`t follow on the final kilometer, he might still gain a spot as he is having a 40s gap to the next, which means Schleck is save with being s.t. as the other podium riders!
Alarcon finishing a bit under 6min later as 2nd of the day as the rest of the break all got caught recently.
Lecuisinier as 3rd at 5'59 and Hirt at 6'08. Strong ride by all three of them.
Henao Montoya also strong with a jump to 4th around 50s later.
Then Schleck leading in the GC winner group at 6'54 with Amador as well in there just like Cattaneo, Machado, Guldhammer and a strong 3rd week Abal!
Surprisingly 11s loss for both Morton and Dombrowski. Later not having had his best 3rd week of a GT but defending the 2nd easily and surely will win a GT in future as well. This year though Schleck was still too strong for him.
Amador as 3rd in the GC could have won in 2018 but had this one day off with bad tactics as well maybe. But in the end surely being happy with 3rd as well.
Lecuisinier actually passed Morton for 4th, while Alarcon is coming 2s short and "only" 6th for him being the Aussie. Very close in the end.
Hirt remains 7th but had a more than solid GT.
Machado 8th ahead of Choi! Crazy final days for the Meiji rider.
Guldhammer started very promising in this Giro but then slowly lost a bit but finished still ahead of Henao Montoya, Abal, Cattaneo.
Dekker next at 8'35 already.
But while Quintana lost a lot, it`s still enough to stay ahead of the Dutch.
And 3 riders less for tomorrows flat stage!
