Vuelta a España - Stage 9

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-000.jpg

It looked like flat stages would never end in this edition of La Vuelta, but today is the last stage for the sprinters in a while. This time is more of a traditional sprint stage, with a flat finish in Cadiz, instead what we had yesterday in Gibraltar, with the finish in El Peñon, where Nick van der Lijke was the strongest.

The new leader is Leigh Howard after a podium place yesterday, with Swift and Coquard with options to retake the lead ahead of tomorrow’s timetrial, where they are expected to lose it to a timetrial specialist

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-001.jpg

It looks like most riders are waiting for other stages to attack, as the first three riders to attack got inmediately a big gap, even considering the stage started with a Cat.4 climb in the first 5 kms of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Meijers got the best of Tronet to take the 5 points in this climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-002.jpg

The final rider in the breakaway was KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos, trying to extend his lead in this classification. He knows that he shouldn’t be able to fight for this jersey in the mountain stages, so he’s trying to get as much points as possible now to try to retain it as long as possible

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-003.jpg

And his tactic was good for today, as in the other two Cat.4 climbs of the day, he was first, gaining 10 more points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-004.jpg

The stage didn’t have any story, as the breakaway saw his gap reduced to less than a minute with 15 kms to go, the time where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos decided to leave behind his two companions

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos is giving the bunch a great fight, as he still keeps a gap of 1 minute with just 8 kms to go. The twisty roads could give the Cuban some leeway, but at this point, the bunch should still fight for the win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-006.jpg

A shame for the Minions rider that the final 4 kms were in a straight line, so despite entering the final 3 kms with a 25-second gap, the bunch would have it very easy to catch him.

Meanwhile, Festina and Aegon have formed their sprint trains as always. It also looks like everyone else is on a different train, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, but the Norwegian might be waiting to get Coquard’s wheel or something like that

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos is getting caught right before the “Green Kit”, thanks to the power of Aegon and Festina’s trains. Interesting tactic by Festina, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar has moved across the road, without anyone following him, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard could go there and have a clean sprint, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift has to jump around other riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-008.jpg

And that’s what it was suppoused to be happening, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard ignored his leadout and launched his sprint by the centre of the road. Surprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert looks to be back on his early race form, and is only behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar in this moment of the sprint. The race leader is coming really fast out of Coquard’s slipstream though

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert is now leading with just 500 metres to go, but it’s a very close sprint, as despite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar starting to fade, the three best sprinters of the race are in second line behind Stallaert, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger are also in contention

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-010.jpg

Only 100 metres to go, and while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard looks to be overtaking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel is going really really fast by the fences, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is also making up ground. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard is struggling to get to their speed, so he won’t get a top result today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-011.jpg

And it’s a win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Leigh Howard in Cadiz! What a way to conclude this sprinting week for the Australian rider, in the same way he started it, with a win and the race lead.

Stallaert saves the second place in the photo-finish over Zabel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-012.jpg

Not a great day for neither Swift or Coquard, who can only be fourth and sixth, with Enger between them. Chen takes seventh, ahead of Van der Lijke, Samolenkov and Kupfernagel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-09-013.jpg

So the sprinter stages finished with these results: 3 wins for Swift, 2 for Coquard and Howard, and one for Stallaert and Van der Lijke. Howard the most consistent, as his big GC lead thanks to bonus shows, and also a great gap in the Points jersey. Maybe a chance to hold it to the end of the race?

Tomorrow we have the timetrial with end again in Cadiz. It’s a very long one, so big gaps are to be expected, and obviously a leader change
