Tour de Suisse - Stage 2
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-000.jpg

Only second day in Suisse and already first mayor day in the race, as today we have a mountain finish in Crans-Montana. Quite a strange profile, as the stage starts with Nefenenpass, an HC climb, and then it’s like 120 flat kms before Crans-Montana, where the stage will finish.

The battle should be between Schleck, Dombrowski, Herklotz, Amador and Morton, but you can never know with such a deep field

Several riders attempted to go in the breakaway, but most of them struggled with Nefenenpass coming up, so only two of them lasted in front; Prado and Vorobev

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-001.jpg

When the climb started, Vorobev was inmediately dropped, while three riders attacked from the bunch, looking to join Prado in the breakaway

Van Niekerk
Egger
Vilela

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-002.jpg

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Egger is the best of the breakaway fighting for the points at the top of Nefenenpass. But with Van Niekerk getting third the young rider is securing the KoM jersey lead unless the breakaway makes it first to the finish in Crans-Montana

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-003.jpg

Wait, that’s Schleck attacking in the bunch! Or at least his team-mate Godoy provoked an split with Andy and Geniez. Puma is reacting quickly, but with such a long flat run into the final climb, it’s not a dangerous move

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-004.jpg

Way before the final climb, the breakaway was caught thanks to the work of Bennelong and Porto. Will see what happens in the final intermediate sprint, as now those bonus seconds are for grabs in the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-005.jpg

It would the race leader, Daniel Vesely, the only one that cared about those seconds, and surely the Czech is sprinting for the points, looking to extend his lead in the Points standings

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-006.jpg

The riders are starting Crans-Montana, a 15-km climb, with an average of 7%, and the two final kms over 10%. Bennelong is pacing the bunch right now, so for the moment no attacks yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-007.jpg

11 kms to go, and only 39 riders are remaining in the first group, as weirdly, the other 150 riders are not doing any effort for closing the 3 minutes gap that has been opened, because Bennelong has also stopped pacing hard in this leading group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-008.jpg

Just 5 kms to go, and no one does anything! Riders are coming from behind and reaching this group before it’s such a slow pace that riders can comeback from 3 minutes deficit quite easily

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-009.jpg

We finally see some activity, as the stage gets to the final 2 kms and riders start to think about the stage win, but still no attacks, just a bit of increased pace, and some sort of “sprint trains” with eBuddy, Bennelong and Puma protecting their leaders with one rider at this point

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-010.jpg

Dombrowski makes an attack for the stage win, and is quickly followed by Schleck and Monsalve

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-011.jpg

Those three riders look like opening a bit of a gap, as Morton struggles as expected to follow such a hard attack, same as Quintana in the left side. Herklotz and Amador are in the first places of the group, but they have to react now if they want the stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-012.jpg

Morton has joined the trio ahead, and the four are getting a 10-second gap to Quintana and the rest of the group with just 600 metres to go. Dombrowski has been doing that attack for so long that i fear he might lack power for the sprint, if Schleck, Monsalve or Morton can go past him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-013.jpg

Just 400 metres to go, and the four riders start their sprints!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-014.jpg

Schleck takes the lead with 200 metres to go, while Morton and Monsalve fight for the third place. Also looks like Hirt and Machado could shut the gap to the front, while Herklotz is struggling around place 15, and looking human for the first time this season

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-015.jpg

Age is just a number for Andy Schleck, as the Luxemborgian legend wins in Crans-Montana, showing that he’s still one of the best climbers in the world despite having started his decline (and what a declining season so far)

Dombrowski settles for second place, which isn’t bad, taking 12 bonus seconds ahead of the TTT

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-016.jpg

Morton beats Monsalve for third place and those 8 bonus seconds that could be so useful later in the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-017.jpg

Machado leads the rest of the group in fifth place, ahead of Hirt, Quintana, Meintjes, Guldhammer, Wellens and Amador, and those would be the 11 riders to finish in Schleck’s time, because Herklotz would already lose 41 seconds, same as Yates, Dekker, Bongiorno or Preidler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/TDS/TDS-2-018.jpg

Obviously Andy Schleck is the new race leader, 8 seconds ahead of Dombroski and 12 of Morton, but tomorrow there’s the 33-km TTT that will shake up GC
