Vuelta a España - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-000.jpg

Second stage of La Vuelta, starting in Reinosa and ending in Valladolid after 177 kms. Quite the transfers riders had to do overnight to arrive in this city of Cantabria coming from yesterday’s finish in Salamanca, where Leigh Howard took the stage win and is now the race leader, ahead of Sondre Holst Enger and Bryan Coquard. Today we have another flat stage, with not even a single KoM, just a couple of intermediate sprints for the breakaway to gain bonus seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-001.jpg

Only two riders give it a try in the first kms, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Lindgren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink, the latter being 5th in GC, just 12 seconds behind Howard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-002.jpg

Though the attacks didn’t stop there, as riders like Groselj, Prado, Bol, Marcos or De Vresse kept trying to break the control of Bennelong. Finally it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos, 7th in GC at 16 seconds, who escaped and joined the leading duo to form a trio at the front.

Again the sprinters waste an opportunity of bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint, as Marcos final attack was only 10 kms from the first intermediate sprint. Also, it has started to rain heavily here

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink wins the first sprint, and gets up to second in provisional GC with those seconds he just won

The second sprint is in the city of Palencia, and there pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Lindgren does an early sprint which surprises the other breakaway riders and gets the 6 seconds from it, with Marcos again second, ahead of Lammertink, who is now only 4 seconds behind Howard in GC. There are 50 kms to go now, and their gap is around 2’30

DISASTER FOR pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png TAYLOR PHINNEY! The American rider has suffered a puncture with less than 25 kms to go, and obviously all his team is stopping to bring him back in the bunch! The breakaways has only 45 seconds now, and this could be what saves Phinney from a bigger disaster, as with the sprinter’s teams don’t need to increase the speed to catch the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-006.jpg

Final 10 kms and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink is attacking the other breakaway riders once the bunch is only 25 seconds in arrears. RBC hasn’t quite yet made the junction, because instead of using Cataford to pull now they are using a useless rider in the flat like Carpenter. They are very close to the back of the group though

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink is caught with 8 kms to go, and NOW is the moment where RBC and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney have to return to the bunch. Once the sprint trains are formed, it’s over for them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-008.jpg

Inside of the final 5 kms, things don’t look well for RBC. They are unable to reduce the gap to the bunch, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney is looking to see his future TT gains “swapped” by the time loss of today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-009.jpg

3 kms to go! Festina and Aegon have again the dominant trains, and everyone else is trying to jump on their trains

Festina and Aegon trains enter the final 2 kms after going through the last corner, and both teams are now having the leadout rider launching the sprint right now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe are on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard’s wheel, while it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Lutsyshyn fighting for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift’s. GC leader is really behind, after he was following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen’s wheel, and the Moser rider was following a fading leadout rider of Coquard, so as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, all have lost a lot of places and probably all chances of getting a good result today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-011.jpg

Under the “Green Kit”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert had already started his sprint, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard didn’t hesitate jumping on the Belgian’s wheel, despite Santos still having power to leadout him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift was struggling a bit in the left side, but he looks to be doing a late sprint, let’s see how it works. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Maksimov or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh had to do a very early sprint to stay in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert stills lead with 700 metres to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe are coming faster through his slipstream though. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift looks like he doesn’t have the speed to compete for anything big today, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard have made a lot of places and are fighting for a decent result if they can keep their sprint until the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard is about to take the lead with 400 metres left, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png are coming even faster than the Frenchman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger are still going strong for a Top5 finish, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is going backwards in a horrible sprint by the Brit, who won’t get any bonus seconds for the second day in-a-row. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke are really fast now close to the left fences, but there’s not enough road to make a comeback

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-014.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bryan Coquard holds the first place until the end, and gets his first ever GT stage win! Fantastic job by the team who did a great leadout and then Coquard chose the right wheel of Stallaert to take the win here in Valladolid

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-015.jpg

Van der Lijke gets a fantastic second place ahead of Stallaert, with Soupe in fourth, with race leader Howard getting a fifth place after his horrible positioning. This means that Bryan Coquard will also become the new race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-016.jpg

Chen beats Swift for the sixth place, with the Top10 being completed by Enger, Kupfernagel and Samolenkov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-017.jpg

RBC made it! Phinney gets to finish in the peloton today after a hard work by the team after his puncture with 25 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bryan Coquard not only gets his first GT stage win, but also gets the race leader in a GT by the first time in his young career! He’s leading with a 8-second gap to Leigh Howard and 12 seconds over Maurits Lammertink. Coquard also takes the lead in the Points jersey

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-02-019.jpg

Tomorrow another sprint chance in Segovia, in a route that could favour more the punchy sprinters, but a mass sprint with all sprinters involved is expected, and also the first KoM points!
