Vuelta a España - Stage 3
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-000.jpg

Third stage of La Vuelta, and while it remains a stage for sprinters for the third consecutive day, it won’t be as easy as the previous two days. Starting in Avila, the race will see its first KoM sprint, so at the end of the stage, the first KoM jersey will be awarded. The stage has only around 120 kms, so a short stage, which includes a circuit around the city of Segovia, where the stage will finish. No sprinters should get eliminated from the final sprint despite the route not being completely flat, but maybe a rider like Van der Lijke could build around yesterday’s second place and take the win today in a course that suits him well

A first move with Roman, Besada, De Haes, Lienhard and Hivert is shut down by Festina and Bennelong

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-002.jpg

But at the end it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Ghani the two riders that form the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-003.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Laurens de Vresse will be the first KoM leader of La Vuelta, after beating Ghani in the sprint for the points in the Cat.4 climb. From the peloton, Marcos and Bol have attacked ¿for the points? The Minions rider gets the final point in the climb

For the first time, the sprinters will get to fight for intermediate sprints, as there’s only 2 breakaway riders in front, that could have been caught by the bunch had they accelerated earlier for this sprint.

In front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vresse beated Ghani again to gain 6 bonus seconds, but more important was that race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard took the final 2 seconds ahead of Kennaugh, thus increasing his GC lead to 10 second over Howard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-005.jpgpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Ghani is caught within 20 kms of the finish, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vresse decides not to give up and tries to stay ahead of the peloton as much as possible

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-007.jpg

But the Belgian wouldn’t stay much longer in front, before getting caught with more than 10 kms to go. Btw, the “hilly” circuit around Segovia didn’t do much, and it looks like we’ll see a pure sprint today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-008.jpg

Really messy sprint preparations, as the downhill to Segovia has lead to Aegon having their full train in front together with Festina, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard is completely missing from the first places of the group. Swift won’t have a better shot at winning than this

Less than 2 kms to go! Aegon looks in total control of the sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bauhaus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli still there for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Contreras hanging on the Brit’s side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert has been left in the middle, and will have to start his sprint early or wait for Festina’s train, who finally has got it together to bring Coquard to the first places. Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Page has placed in the middle of train, probably causing more confusion to Festina riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-010.jpg

Under the “Green Kit”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli is leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, who will do a very late sprint, trusting the gap he got to other riders, who are coming strong from behind, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe, who keeps doing great in the sprints for yet another day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard is being helped by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, but he should launch his sprint soon if he wants to repeat his win from yesterday

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-011.jpg

700 metres to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is again superslow as yesterday. Even Bauhaus stays in front of him now, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Contreras having passed him already. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard are coming with a lot of speed and could be a factor in the stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh looks to be too much behind, while Van der Lijke is nowhere to be seen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-012.jpg

Last 400 metres for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe, who is looking ready to get a huge win here in Segovia! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert repeating yesteday’s performance, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift has been blocked by own team-mate!!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-013.jpg

Only 200 metres to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert are still fighting for the win, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is making a huge comeback to try to get a stage podium. The terrible sprint of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is seeing him drop places like each metre, really hard to see from a rider like him. But wait, Soupe is struggling with his speed right now...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-014.jpg

... and the French rider gets overtaken in the last second by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Joeri Stallaert, who gets the win in Segovia! Heart-breaking moment for Soupe, who has to take a second place today, which wouldn’t feel that bad if he hadn’t been leading until the last 10 metres

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-015.jpg

Howard takes the final podium spot from Contreras, who gets a really surprising fourth place for Desigual, despite being only the third sprinter in the team. Coquard will defend his GC lead thanks to the intermediate sprint bonus second, but today only gets a Top5. Even Samolenkov finishes ahead of Swift, who continues to struggle with his top speed despite almost perfect leadouts from his team. Kupfernagel, Chen and Zabel complete the Top10 of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-03-016.jpg

What a day for Joeri Stallaert, as the Belgian goes to the podium to receive the trophy as stage winner in Segovia, his first ever stage win in a GT.

Bryan Coquard remains as the GC leader for one more day, with only a 2-second gap over Leigh Howard and today’s winner Joeri Stallaert. Swift has not yet collected any bonus seconds in the three stages so far. Tomorrow the Brit (and the rest) will get another chance in Albacete
