Devonport to Penguin. The town of Penguin is known for its statues of, well , penguins . Anyway, a lot of up and down today, including a local circuit around Penguin. The finish is four kilometers after the top of the final climb.
The breakaway consists of four riders, also the order at the first category four climb:
Bru
Tratnik
Pernsteiner
Roosen
KoM-leader Gebrezgabihier, together with Latour and Morne Van Niekerk, tried to join but the peloton didn't allow that. The front group leads by 3'30.
Aker then takes control of the peloton, reducing the gap to two minutes before the intermediate sprint, won by Bru as well. This reduced gap meant Gebrezgabihier attacked again, and Aker let him. We now have a break of five, with a lead of 2'30.
From some reason Bru, Pernsteiner and Roosen decide to give up, and drop back to the peloton, resulting in just two leaders: Gebrezgabihier and Tratnik. There was no clear reason to drop back as the gap got back up to three minutes, and they did not appear weaker than the other two.
Tratnik will challenge Gebrezgabihier for the mountains classification. Tratnik takes the category two climb of Bel Mount. Prado attacked from the peloton to take third, with Hepburn and Phelan taking the remaining points by leading the peloton over the climb. The gap is two minutes with 75 kilometers to go.
After the climb, Tratnik continues without Gebrezgabihier. The Slovenian would also take the next category four climb. Gebrezgabihier would take second place but would be caught by the peloton in the descent. Virtual classification: Gebrezgabihier 21, Tratnik 18, Prado 15.
And Tratnik takes six points at the next climb to overtake Gebrezgabihier in the classification. Only ten points remaining on a category two climb on the local circuit. On the climb, four riders got a gap: Lietaer, Lane, Bobridge and Hagen. They join Tratnik over the top and lead by 30 seconds. Aegon leads the chase.
Boom and Barbero close the gap. While this was probably not meant as a real attempt to get away, but when it happened Lietaer and Lane were relaying to help their leaders stay ahead. As a result, the peloton has been reduced to 100, with most time trialists with weaker hill ability dropped.
Race leader Ciolek is also gone, not that he would be a force to reckon with anyway. Weinstein also in this third group behind the peloton. Gebrezgabihier is also behind the peloton, so no challenge for the KoM from him anymore.
The first climb of Gunns Plains ends without attacks, Lane being the first to cross. We will climb again, except there are no mountain points on offer. Tratnik has secured the KoM jersey. A few riders got dropped on the climb, including some outsiders like Dennis, Teklehaimanot, Brown and Boaro.
Mohoric decides to attack on the descent, which is not a bad move given his downhill skill. No team feels responsible to chase him, so he manages to establish a gap.
Seven kilometers to go, half of which is climbing @ 8.7% average. Mohoric starts the climb with a head start of nearly a minute.
Attacks early on the climb. Kelderman opens up, Trofimov follows together with De Bie, Bobridge and Sagan. Hagen also giving the impression that he will attack.
Hagen decides to attack, followed by Barbero, Ponzi and Kangert. De Bie is now ahead of the chasing group in pursuit of Mohoric.
The Slovenian's lead is getting thinner. 13 seconds to De Bie, 23 to the favorites group. Izagirre, Van Stayen and Koretzky are the next bunch to attack, though the gap to the other favorites is already 35 seconds.
Mohoric leads over the top but is caught by De Bie, and also by Hagen with a strong push in the final meters. Seventeen seconds is the gap.
The trio remains in the lead after the downhill, maintaining a constant gap to the group behind where there's no true cooperation either. These three will sprint for the stage victory and the GC lead, depending on the gap to Ponzi.
Edvald Boasson Hagen wins the sprint-Ã -trois in Penguin. Mohoric second, De Bie third. The sprint looked closer than it actually was, the Norwegian had his hands raised in the final 100 meters.
Ponzi sprints to fourth, at nineteen seconds. So that means Hagen is the GC leader, by 8 seconds over Mohoric, 12 over De Bie and 27 over Ponzi. The others in this group at 39.
Sagan, Bobridge, Kelderman, Barbero, Kangert and Trofimov complete the top ten and this group. Some unexpected names in here, and some riders with decent time trial capabilities. Bobridge, Kangert and Trofimov might be the most likely challengers to Hagen.
Izagirre actually came very close to this group, finishing at 35 seconds from the winner. He's at 55 seconds from Hagen in the GC, which might be too much to overcome in the time trial but he definitely has a shot of a top five result.
The next group finishes at 1'24, led by Koretzky. Other riders in this group are Van Stayen, Boswell, Rosskopf, van der Hugenhaben and Vogt.
The beaten one's rolling over the finish at two minutes, led by an anonymous Ginanni and also containing the likes of Beltran, Gastauer, Bibby, Keinath and Claeys. Given the length of tomorrow's TT (17 kilometers) these riders are surely out of contention for the win, and the top ten will be difficult as well.
No stuffed penguins at the podium ceremony, a missed opportunity if you'd ask me.
