Yet another hilly stage that opens up yet another opportunity for Gesink but also the GC puncheurs Van Garderen, Lutsenko or Sagan to get an advantage over the pure stage racers.
Though while the two hills are very steep, the way to the finish afterwards is still quite a bit.
5 in the break:
Herklotz
Izagirre
Gougeard
Naud
Wallays
So a break for the KoM contender on todays stage.
After Koretzky attacked early, the pace went up and not much later all riders are back in the peloton. So once again on a day for a potential breakaway, the peloton is not allowing anything.
Meanwhile Tewelde hit the ground and has to abandon. And while the sprints did not run as planned for Cavendish so far in most occasions, this is still a big hit anyway.
Actually one rider attacked again for a solo attempt with 90km to go. It`s Naud after the first attempt failed.
Behind him Van der Lijke and Roelandts take small points at the sprint with Kennaugh and Groenewegen being beaten in the semi-sprint.
Next sprint and this time Roelandts and Cavendish take minor points.
40km and the first passing of the climb. Once again Koretzky can`t wait and goes first.
He catches Naud still before the top to take the 6 points.
Fraile off the peloton to take the last.
One lap further at the start of the last passing, the gap for Koretzky is tiny. Movistar for Van Garderen seem to plan something as the pace is incredibly high.
Just when he is caught, the US rider goes past him and nobody is able to follow immediately.
Koretzky still in 2nd at the top with Brambilla pulling the peloton into pieces working hard for Gesink.
One rider to be dropped as one of the first is Tenorio, 5th in the GC!
More than 100 riders ahead of him, so he must have crashed somewhere for sure! He will lose lots of time for sure but at least he got some team mates with him.
Further up Brambilla on one of his great days again pulling Gesink with him and only Lutsenko and Zakarin follow.
Then a 33 rider group around the remaining GC riders where Velits/Sagan work for Becherovka.
The "peloton" broke into 2 halfs once again. Being dropped during the descent are Bongiorno, Goos and Morton as best placed riders.
8,5km for Van Garderen.
45s later a duo of Gesink and Lutsenko, who still have 20s on the next riders, who need to cooperate better as right now it`s still just Becherovka.
It took them another 4km though to cooperate. Guldhammer, Lecuisinier, Nibali and Van den Broeck as well in the lead now trying to close the gap, that went up a bit.
Same for Van Garderen, who is fastest at the moment being up to 1min aiming yet another Vuelta stage win!
Behind the cooperation is stopped again. Several riders instead try to go on their own. It`s Guldhammer as first and Lecusinier as 2nd who attacked.
But it`s just for GC spots and not the stage. Since the attack it was never a big question that Van Garderen would win. He looked just too dominant on that terrain.
Lutsenko outsprints Gesink for 2nd. But more interesting behind as Guldhammer seems to be closing. 27s only for him to Gesink in the end. And he gained on all others.
Sagan next as he catches Lecuisinier in the sprint. With him Nibali, Van der Lijke and Kolesnikov! All with a gap!
~40s later the remaining riders around Pluchkin and Machado. Most GC riders in that group!
Well most. Becherovka went all-in for Sagan today and failed. Twice even as Velits, who worked for him was dropped in the end and is losing more than 1'30 today on his biggest opponents.
Also Brambilla in this group after working too much.
Goos, Bongiorno, Morton group is losing another minute while Tenorio is 9min off in total meaning he is outside the top10 in the GC now! Hopefully this was a one timer and he is going to improve again. At least they didn`t sent Keinath back as co-leader.
