The second and shorter time trial of the race. Phinney won the first time trial and hopes to extend his GC lead going into the final stage tomorrow.
Ligthart is last in the GC and therefore the first starter of today. He puts 46'39 as benchmark time.
Korsaeth is second-a-last in the GC and therefore the second starter of today. He comfortably Ligthart's time by 39 seconds at 46 minutes flat.
He doesn't have time to settle in the hot seat, because Oram goes another 26 seconds faster.
Golovash is four seconds slower at the first split, eight seconds slower at the second split and twelve seconds slower at the finish. Nice, constant ride but unfortunately just a tiny bit slower than the New Zealander.
New best time at the first split for Hepburn. While he's leading by four seconds at the first timing point and nine at the second, he implodes at the end to concede six seconds on the final time, and therefore doesn't beat his teammate.
Take your picture quickly or else you miss him: Paillot steams across the track. Not surprisingly he posts the best time: 44'16, a whopping 1 minute and 16 seconds faster.
Some riders post fast times at first splits, but then drop off a bit at the end but remain in the provisional top ten. Riders such as Salcone, Weinstein, Gidich and Benito. They might have profited from a changing wind direction but they all end today's stage somewhere between 15th and 30th.
Canty, Brown, Laengen and Goos suffer less of a drop off after a good first section, and go virtual sixth, seventh, eight and ninth.
Brändle with the second time at the first split (+'27), but drops behind both Bennelong men for virtual fourth place at +1'15.
Chiarello just inside the virtual top ten, but defending his GC place against the Austrian.
Fifteen riders left: Nerz loses nearly two minutes to Paillot but doesn't have to fear his GC position.
Marquez with the second time at the split so far (+'18), but he appears to have gone too fast at the start. +2'14 at the end, not even a virtual top twenty.
Abal with the exact same time at the first split, except he has enough energy left to maintain that pace. He goes provisional second place, and might gain some places in the GC.
He gains one on Olivier, who only had a one second margin going into today. While the Dutchman posts a decent time for his abilities (+2'19), the Spaniard overtakes him with ease.
Schelling with +2'09. That's enough to keep Abal behind by six seconds.
Haig can't afford to lose more than eight seconds to Schelling, and doesn't. In fact he posts the second time of the day so far, 42 seconds from Paillot
Going into the stage as GC ninth, Denifl has an off-day (+2'47) and drops behind both Haig and Schelling to eleventh.
Galta completing his stage without any major problems (+2'09), not amongst the fastest but good enough to keep his eight place.
+2'04 for Reis, maybe the Portugese expected a better time but he goes in and out as seventh in the GC.
Tenorio second at both splits, and only 23 seconds off Paillot in the end. Five riders left and then the Frenchman can celebrate.
Kritskiy needs to make up 18 seconds on Madrazo to take fourth in the GC. +1'14 for provisional fifth on the stage.
Madrazo fends off the attack, in fact he posts a better time as the Russian (+1'02) and might even be challenging Sicard for third.
Speaking of Sicard, the Frenchman does not convince at the splits with only 20th place. In the end he lost 2'07 to Paillot, which not only drops him behind Madrazo but also behind Kritskiy.
Nearly overtaking Sicard on the line, Pluchkin clocks in at 44'43, which is third place at 27 seconds. He needs 18 seconds on Phinney to take the GC lead.
That doesn't happen. Taylor Phinney shows everyone who is the boss and obliterates Paillot's times. 43'34 is the winning time of today, 42 seconds ahead of Paillot, 1'05 on Tenorio and 1'09 on Pluchkin. The gap between the American and Moldovan in the GC is 1'27 with one stage to go!
