Beijing – Badaling 232 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/0.jpg

It is a nice clear morning in Beijing though we got some strong winds in the region of 40 km/h. 195 riders ready at the start incl. 3 from a local amateur team.

The morning breakaway is initiated by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Naud. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Dzhus also on the move, but it is only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Naud and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy able to stay clear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/01.jpg

A little later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Altur and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Brandão joins the front.

We are still in Beijing city, but the hard pace of the pursuit has already broken the peloton, 31 riders sitting more than two minutes behind, some of them capable riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Moscon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tsatevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Smirnovs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Gebrezgabihier pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Mudarra and strongest of all pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Paulinho

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/02.jpg

The group gets back and afterwards things settle down, the breakaway start to build a lead.

The peloton passes the first time over the climb 6’19” behind the breakaway, about 140 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk working on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/03.jpg

2th passing of the climb, distance still growing now 7’11”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk still doing most of the work.

3rd passing of the climb, the peloton is starting to take back some distance and selection has started from the back of the bunch. 96 km left, lead 6’50”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/04.jpg

4th passing of the climb, distance 5’10”
5th passing of the climb, distance 3’29”, with 157 riders in the peloton the pace is not that hot yet, but in the front group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Altur seems to have realized he won’t make it today, losing more than a minute very fast.
More teams are setting pace now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Hugo Boss especially working hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/05.jpg

6th passing of the climb, distance 2’04”, just one more left. We got 124 rider in the peloton at this point, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Salinas leading on most of this climb.

Now the final climb before the descent and uphill sprint finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy attacks from the breakaway with 18 km left, distance a little more than a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/06.jpg

The motorcycle camera catch the first prominent victim of the day pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vogt, sitting in a group 1’23” behind the peloton and not looking like he could bounce back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/07.jpg

In front of the peloton we get the first attack between the favourites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan opening with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/08.jpg

That was closed down quickly, but over the top another attempt this time started by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan.

Acceleration by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen and the gap were closed again. All these accelerations and counters do not change the fact, that the peloton is not riding a constant high pace and race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy is extending his lead, 2’04” with just 7.2 km to the line. With 120 riders in the peloton some riders have actually been re-joining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/09.jpg

The peloton gets closer on the downhill, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy has 1’20” under the red kite, he has to seriously explode not to get a sensational underdog win in Badaling International.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/10.jpg

The favourite group has 1.5 km to the line, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi in front it looks like this,

. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/11.jpg

With 300 meter to the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Godoy is already celebrating, there is no way he can lost this race. Unbelievable!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/12.jpg

700 meters left for the favorites.
It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png McCutcheon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin the last domestic left protection his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Badaling/13.jpg

300 meters left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi. He has extended his gap a few meters to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Skujins close behind Bakelants left.
Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png McCutcheon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Salinas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen in that order. Behind those a gap of 6-8 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi crosses the line as 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan just missing the podium as 4th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Skujins 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen disappointing his many fans as 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie 7th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndt 8th a great race from the Team Puma climber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona 10th what a day for him in Beijing – stunning result.

Overall hard to believe that the favorites did not manage to make this race harder, giving it to the breakaway and letting 121 riders get the same time.
