G'day from George Town, off the north coast of Tasmania. We head to Launceston, the second-largest city after Hobart with a long stage of 205 kilometers. The sprinters are the likely contenders for the stage victory.
The first attempt to form a breakaway by Afonso, Korsaeth, Meijers and Sütterlin failed.
The second attempt however would be more successful. Prado leads them over the category three climb ahead of Gebrezgabihier, Weinstein and Hofer. These four would be leading by a maximum of seven minutes.
Ginanni punctures his rear wheel. He rejoins the peloton on his own, without the help of teammates dropping back. Scary moment for the Italian and his team, but everything is good now.
And on the next category three climb, Gebrezgabihier wins ahead of Weinstein and Prado, with Hofer once again the slowest. Since this is the final climb of the day, Gebrezgabihier will lead the KoM classification with 10 points, Prado second with 8 and Weinstein third with 6. Hofer with nothing.
Weinstein would win all three intermediate sprints, and Hofer would finish last in all of them too. Three times six means eighteen bonus seconds for the German. The winner of today's stage will receive twenty, so assuming the break doesn't survive and he finishes inside the peloton he will be second in the GC.
Evonik and Aker the teams working hard at front all day, with Bennelong and Air France helping out at some points. At the ten kilometer banner they catch the breakaway, except Prado who attacks right before this moment.
He got up to thirty seconds, but at 3.5 he also gets caught. Here are the sprint trains being formed:
Trentin Vesely Ciolek Becis Chen Van Stayen Reinhardt Dzamastagic Ponzi Tzortzakis Kump Martinelli Smirnovs
Only two trains, Aker versus Evonik. Porsev, Soupe, Howard, Reimer and Maksimov behind, but not getting behind a train. Groenewegen even further away.
And we have a split. Soupe managed to join on the back of the Aker train. Ponzi might gain time on his rivals here. The Evonik train going faster than the Aker train but Dzamastagic goes too early, leaving Van Stayen behind.
Horrible leadout from Evonik, as Aker easily sails past Dzamastagic and Van Stayen has no speed and a positional disadvantage. Kump and Tzortzakis also tangled, meaning they won't challenge for the win either. Maksimov, Groenewegen, Hagen and Reimer are leading the sprint for fourteenth, with the hope they'll catch the back of the group to avoid time loss.
Vesely with the perfect leadout for Ciolek, but he has to battle with Chen, Reinhardt and also Ponzi for the win. The Italian might even take bonus seconds here.
Gerald Ciolek and his team did everything right today, as he wins here in Launceston and takes home the first yellow jersey. Ponzi beating Reinhardt for second place, so he starts tomorrow's stage with an advantage of at least twelve seconds over his rivals. Chen imploded in the final 200 meters, allowing Van Staeyen to come from all the way back to finish fourth. Kump a slightly disappointing sixth, ahead of Vesely, Soupe, Dzamastagic and Becis.
Groenewegen wins the sprint for twelfth as some train elements and also Tzortzakis were caught. They're in luck, as the jury is lenient and awards no time gap. Thus Ponzi only gains twelve seconds. Weinstein finished in the peloton and receives his promised second place in the GC, as well as the white jersey for best young rider.
