The penultimate mountain stage and one of the very few downhill finishes in this years Giro!
The long Cat.2 early on isn`t that hard but then 3 consecutive Cat.1 climbs without a lot of refreshing time and a long descent towards the end. Perfect for riders such as Nibali or Preidler. IF they make it over the last climbs that is.
Dombrowski and also yesterdays pity Amador might as well try something on that descent as Schleck is not really good on the way down.
When checking the startlist of "just" 156 riders left in the race, the smallest team is Prio with 3! Not a lot of support left for Machado. Aegon/Air France/Volvo with 4 neither a lot of support for their ~top 15 riders.
Special mention to Bennelong, Philips, Evonik, Isostar and RBC. All with the full 8 rider lineup still in the race.
Yet another strong KoM hunting breakaway.
Vosekalns the obvious one. Not only as it`s going uphill, which is a guarantee for him to be in the break but also as Choi and Schleck are slowly closing.
Fraile since his ITT win also very active.
Chamorro today getting a free role with Lecuisinier maybe in need later as relay station.
Choi as mentioned in the big KoM fight as well now, which was looking boring until yesterday.
Dyball as well as possible relay station for Morton.
Martin, Rosch and Hivert are chasing a lot. It`s some kind of 3rd week story of the Giro. Teams that were hoping for a bit more this Giro are chasing early on when missing the breakaway, this way making it difficult and trying to "force" one of theirs in a 2nd move.
And this time it`s successful as Quintana joins as well a bit later. 17th in the GC.
The Cat.2 sees Vosekalns taking the 10 points! Big one as Choi isn`t closing. 146 vs 85 (Schleck) vs. 82 Choi now.
The gap was up to 7min and on the descent came down to 4min again. But Quintana/Choi are definitely stronger as Heymes/Kneisky and the gap is extending again to 7:30 on the first Cat.1.
And also the KoM fight is thrilling as Vosekalns is dropped! Just like Chamorro ahead of him and Dyball/Fraile earlier already.
Just 2 in front with Quintana likely more interested in the stage win than the KoM points, so they might cooperate.
At the top Choi taking the 16 points with Vosekalns only half with 8 points, which means 154 vs 98 with 32 to get today and more tomorrow.
Big dilemma in the peloton. Kirsch and Goos are chasing but it`s no real danger for Schleck and he will need them once Dombrowski/Amador etc. are attacking. So not using them really yet and the gap is up to almost 11min!
The teams in need to chase would be Aegon/Volvo for the GC positions of Dekker and Abal but they lack the team size.
Berg for Cattaneo or Desigual for Nibali maybe? Or even Aker, Philips or Porto for the late top10? At least some team should do something soon.
Air France was one of the limited 4 rider teams as well this morning but with Quintana in the break, they have done the perfect job and actually he has gapped him on the middle Cat.1, which means stealing 4 points from him in the KoM fight to the joy of Evonik.
Choi as better descender by far though might come back.
Vosekalns as well still ahead of the peloton is getting another 8 points, which still has him 52 points ahead.
Choi couldn`t make it back and now on top of the last climb he is already 90s behind and should struggle to gain back that much!
Further behind finally some actual.
Amador and Dombrowski attack the GC leader. Good that Goos and Kirsch were saving energy so far as they now can take over, which is needed as more riders try to follow!
Alarcon and Guldhammer namely are also a bit ahead of the small GC group with Goos now giving it all for his leader.
Already at the bottom Quintana can celebrate and will gain a few spots surely as the gap is huge.
Same goes for Choi, who is coming in 1'09 behind him.
Chamorro at 3'03 and Vosekalns at 6'34 also still ahead of the peloton.
Goos has done well. Dombrowski and Amador are caught despite their descent skills. It`s all back in that one group but still more than 6km to go!
Some late attempts to attack but it was basically some kind of early sprint only.
Morton leads the group in ahead of the other GC riders.
Demare surely happy to see so many riders ahead of Schleck in 8th as this means he is just 13 points behind him and might get the jersey back on the final stage.
GC wise Quintana up to 13th ahead of Dekker and now Choi with Nibali dropping out of the top15 ahead of Bongiorno and Bibby.
