There it is. the first mountain road stage in the 2018 Giro d'Italia and it`s two very tough climbs with the later being the finish at the top!
Alarcon has won the only other mountain stage so far, which was an individual time trial though. Seeing his loss in the TTT afterwards, he needs to gain big time and is the one in need to attack surely.
Amador as GC leader in a comfortable situation to have the advantage of the TT advantage still and mainly needs to react.
Schleck, Dombrowski and Morton not the big TT stars and will surely have to gain a lot of time on Amador while Machado needs as well, in especially as Lecuisinier is the better timetrialist, though he had a weak TTT due to missing team support. Then so many riders fighting for each position and mainly for the late top10 and top15 spots! But with some luck and a good day could even pass some of the earlier mentioned.
6 riders in the morning move and no surprise to see yet again Vosekalns in his daily attack to extend the KoM lead.
Arashiro
Veyhe
Nareklishvili
Brandão
Mamykin
again not the biggest mountain riders with last two still the most decent ones.
Behind UBS and eBuddy share the early chasing.
Arashiro very early, Brandao, Nareklishvili and Veyhe next and then only Mamykin able to stay with Vosekalns.
And it`s just the first part of that double climb up Passo Cason di Lanza! The much easier part as well.
Over the top though Vosekalns with the expected 16 points as he also has gapped Mamykin by 90s in the far background!
Brandao and Veyhe next while Smith attacked from the peloton for 6 points and also Olsson attacked for 2 points as Nareklishviki was still in between!
And while Dion Smith was staying ahead of the peloton, he is still 6min behind Vosekalns as solo leader. The peloton by now 9'12 behind which is almost the gap that he has as 38th and he is almost in the virtual leader jersey!
eBuddy is not interested in letting him gain that much time and also wants to make it difficult for all other riders as Dombrowski surely is planning something.
Van der Velde, Aru, Majka all working and just Frank from UBS also up there.
The gap to Vosekalns is down to ~6'30 and just 10km to go for him, which is almost 5km less than the peloton!
The first move from the peloton with 8,5km to go though is from Alarcon and as said, he needs to gain a lot of time to even make it inside the top5 again.
Several riders though are going after him a bit later. And it`s the big names:
Dombrowski first immediately followed by Amador and Schleck.
Then Machado and Morton. So the top6 climbers all with their move!
The 2nd tier climbers fighting for the next spots go next:
First Henao Montoya and Lecuisinier.
Then Hirt and Guldhammer followed by Quintana, Kolesnikov and Bibby.
Missing out are Dekker, Abal and Cattaneo. First is chasing with Abal and his team mate Ludvigsson sitting right behind the Dutch.
They make it quick up to Bibby again and together with Cort Nielsen, Cattaneo, Bongiorno, Choi, Nibali, Carapaz, Preidler and many more they slowly try to clsoe the gap. Though work only on Dekker at the moment.
At the top favourite group it`s Dombrowski and Schleck now up to Alarcon with Amador having a small gap.
Then Machado ahead of Morton. Both not able to follow that high acceleration by first two.
Lecusinier in a group of 5 including Henao, Hirt and Guldhammer.
Vosekalns is having 2'25 with 4,3km to go and is not as fast as the others while Mamykin is soon to be caught.
Then Kolesnikov and Quintana still a small gap to the next where Dekker opened a gap with only Abal +1 and Bibby following.
Nibali, Cattaneo then with Chamorro and Reguigui behind them.
Amador was able to close the gap to Schleck/Dombrowski/Alarcon making it 4 riders now chasing Vosekalns.
Behind Lecuisinier attacking the newly merged group around Morton and Machado, where also Henao, Hirt and Guldhammer are in. The French now first chaser of the top riders.
Dekker/Abal/Bibby up to Kolesnikov/Quintana and opening the gap to the next in the fight for the last top10 spots. Though 10 GC riders ahead of them as well, so getting into the top10 in the end is hard enough already.
1,3km for Vosekalns. The quartett is just 40s behind and could catch him but instead they are watching at each other as nobody wants to go too early! Might be an opportunity for the Latvian to grab the stage.
Further behind Lecuisinier still first chaser while Henao Montoya and Guldhammer can`t follow the pace. Surprisingly set by Hirt, who seems to be stronger than Machado/Morton, who belong to todays losers by the look of it. For the Aussie, it`s the second weak performance in a row.
And even further behind. Abal has not worked at all so far and is now attacking Dekker.
Good news for Berg though as Cattaneo made it into that group with an impressive solo comeback. Surely could have gone earlier but missed the moves it seems.
Inside the final kilometer and the gap to Vosekalns became bigger again with the quartett still not going all in.
And this way gifting Evonik the stage win! And more points for the KoM ranking. Well done.
Finally Schleck attacks. Surely realized that the riders from behind slowly are coming closer and Lecuisinier in fact was almost up to them.
Amador and Alarcon not looking as good as the other two in that sprint.
Though Alarcon played probably. He stayed in contact but finished as 4th behind Schleck and Dombrowski, who gain more bonus seconds.
Amador indeed losing a bit in the end. 14s + bonus seconds, which means, we have a new GC leader! Andy Schleck in his first post prime season leads the Giro at half time after the first mountain top finish.
Lecuisinier also with a strong ride at 1'26, which is 24s behind Amador.
Morton, Hirt and Machado all at 1'41. For the Moser rider it was a great ride, for the others a time loss in the fight for the top5 or even podium in Morton`s case.
Guldhammer and Henao Montoya then at 2'03 losing another 22s.
Abal indeed gaining a few seconds here. At 2'57 he is finishing 8s ahead of Dekker followed by Cattaneo, Kolesnikov and Quintana.
Around the corner Choi and Nibali 37s later. Limiting their loss but losing out on direct top10-15 rivals.
Bongiorno as Puma leader with Faiers for Isostar and Chamorro exactly 1min after Nibali while behind another 14s for Cort Nielsen, Preidler, Bibby.
