Vuelta a España - Stage 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-000.jpg

´
Day 5 of La Vuelta in a stage that will take the riders from Albacete to Utiel. Despite being another stage for the sprinters, today we’ll have the biggest climb so far in the race, a Cat.3 climb. Maybe it’s not that “big”.

Yesterday Ben Swift took his first win of the race ahead of race leader Bryan Coquard and former race leader Leigh Howard. They are the three best sprinters in the race on paper, each have already won one stage, and they will be looking to repeat yesterday’s battle today in Utiel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-001.jpg

Three well-known riders form today’s breakaway. All of them have been quite active in the previous stages

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink (5th GC +26)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos (9th GC +30)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese (KoM leader, 5 points)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vresse overtakes Marcos in the very last moment to win the first sprint of the day. Not that the Evonik rider should care too much about the bonus, given that he lost time the previous day he was part of the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-003.jpg

And it’s again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vresse winning the second and last intermediate sprint, with Marcos second again. This will put both Lammertink and Marcos tied with Swift in GC 4th place 22 seconds behind race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink wins the Cat.3 KoM, but with De Vresse taking second place, the Belgian rider will stay as KoM leader for another day

Cat.3 KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-005.jpg

The breakaway gets caught with 15 kms to go, and given how tired the riders were, maybe Marcos and Lammertink will lose their GC spots. There’s a reasonable ammount of wind right now, and in the last 10 kms, which are basically a straight line, riders will have lateral-head winds of around 25 km/h. Crosswind time?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-006.jpg

Last 3 kms before the sprint, and it’s another battle between Festina and Aegon trains. It also looks like Festina’s train is quite popular, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke following it. The riders that form the trains are the same as previous days, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bauhaus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli helping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos doing the same for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke is in the middle of both trains, maybe trying to do something with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, but the British rider is actually following Madrazo. Stallaert and Enger are like yesterday too far back

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-007.jpg

The final leadout riders are already acting with 1,7 kms to go, and only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard have been able to succesfully keep Coquard’s wheel, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel got blocked by a fading Aegon rider and has had to start his sprint from really far back, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Keough has made a great progression to be actually involved in the sprint, being in Clarke’s wheel, though the Aussie rider sprint has just been destroyed by Bauhaus

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard has launched his sprint already, and looks to be the first to enter the final corner with 700 metres to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is next to him but taking the outside line in the corner, while riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke look to be taking the inside line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard has decided to follow Coquard’s slipstream, after avoiding his leadout men pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos, that could block pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel in the corner as it stands right now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard exits the final corner and has a little gap over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift with 400 metres to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard has gained the position to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen in the battle for third, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel shouldn’t be counted out yet for the fight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bryan Coquard wins again in Utiel! Second stage win for the French star, making this race a very succesfull one for him and his team already! This means that Swift has to settle for the second place, which isn’t bad by itself, but after three bad days for the Brit, only the win is enough to compensate that. Howard gets another stage podium to stay 2nd in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-011.jpg

Chen gets a great fourth place ahead of Van der Lijke and Kupfernagel. Soupe with another nice result in seventh, with Zabel, Clarke and Samolenkov closing the Top10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-05-012.jpg

Bryan Coquard sees his GC increased to 18 seconds over Howard and 30 over Swift, who rises up to third. Stallaert is down to fourth, 34 seconds behind Coquard, while Soupe is fifth already 50 seconds behind the French rider

Coquard also has a good lead in the Points jersey, having already 100 points, 15 more than Howard and 23 more than Swift.

De Vresse stays as KoM leader, and was part of the anecdote of the day, as once he got dropped from the bunch in the final kms, ALL Evonik riders waited for him without a logical reason. Luckily for them, all got the bunch’s time. Not the same luck for Lammertink and Marcos, who lose their GC spots after losing 4 minutes today
