Giro d'Italia - Stage 1
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0001.jpg

Today it`s the start of the Giro d'Italia 2018 and we do it with a 2,8km prologue, half over cobbles and half over gravel though. How does this impact the oepner? The bookies go for prologue specialists such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Vlatos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sütterlin etc.

Some teams went for decent cobblers and many of them are decent on short prologues as well such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Boom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Oliveira or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc.

Time will tell, who is going to take the opening stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0005.jpg

Early on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Walsleben with a new best time! 1s faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kruijswijk. This doesn`t say a lot yet as both are good on cobbles and prologues.
Both did beat guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Verona or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Rosskopf though and actually by quite a few seconds. Though those are really bad on cobbles. But surely it has some impact!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Vlatos as one of the very best prologue specialists in the finish and the number says 3rd! 3s slower than Walsleben! So now it`s obvious. While both strength might count something, the cobbled factor is big, a lot bigger than bookies expected and we might move over to cobblers and combination riders instead of time trialists now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Schär just moments later s.t. as Vlatos but being ranked behind the Greek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sütterlin as well without a chance. 7th and +8 only behind riders such as Van der Velde or Skala as well. Later though with a +5 day clearly as he did beat better cobblers as well easily.

A bit later it`s clear. Some lower 70`s cobbler without prologue skills basically match 78-80`s pure prologue specialists without cobble skills. Once you combine both strength, you will do well today and win the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc is one of those very best and a complete rider in general. New best time beating Walsleben by 2s!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Edmondson another rider with strength on many terrains and he shows this today. 3rd for now 1s behind Walsleben while Kittel is the next to fail the top spots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Oliveira though both with good times again. Same time but ranked behind Edmondson and Walsleben.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Boom next and while they had him listed as 2nd with +2s behind Polanc first, they later move him behind Walsleben and Oliveira as well making him 4th provisionally.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0025.jpg

All times were worth nothing though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Wisniowski storms through the finish. Incredible 5s faster than Polanc! And this surely will be the first leader of the 2018 Giro or is anybody able to beat this?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_01_PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber as last coming rather close but 8s down in the end. Though in best position for taking over with tomorrows sprint stage.

GC wise here a short overview as those came short in the stage win focussed report. Guldhammer as best 12s behind Wisniowski:
