Vuelta a España - Stage 7

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-000.jpg

Today we complete the first third of the race with the seventh consecutive day for the sprinters, in a stage that starts in Algeciras and ends in Malaga, after passing through a hard climb with 50 kms to go. Shouldn’t be enough to drop any sprinters, but maybe some team wants to “play” and made the race as hard as possible for the less-punchy sprinters.

Yesterday, Ben Swift took his second stage win of the race in a photo-finish against Leigh Howard. Both riders closed the gap in GC to Bryan Coquard, who could lose today the lead if either of them wins the stage and the French rider isn’t in the stage podium

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-001.jpg

´
Really strong winds in the start in Algeciras, something that could affect the stage outcome if it remains for the latter part of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Spengler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Korosec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjølberg are the first attackers, and they quickly build a 1-minute gap on the bunch, where serval riders like KoM leader De Vresse, Ghani, Prado, Meijers or Van WInden are trying to join the breakaway, though sprinter’s team don’t allow them to do so

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjolberg used a smarter strategy than the clear favourite Korosec to get the 5 points out of the first climb of the day. Korosec was even beated by Spengler, the worst puncheur of the trio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Korosec is the only one that sprints in the only intermediate sprint of the day in the city of Marbella, so he gets 6 bonus seconds. Here it starts the big climb of the day, Puerto de Ojen, Cat.2, which summit is 55 kms away from the finish line in Malaga. Their gap to the bunch is now 3 minutes, though it reached almost 9 minutes at some point

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-004.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjolberg is the best too in Puerto de Ojen, taking all 10 points from this climb, which means that the rider of Aker is the new KoM leader

Winds of over 50 km/h in the final part of the stage, but it looks like no team is willing to “play” with crosswinds today. The bunch is less than a minute away from the breakaway riders with less than 20 kms left, so a sprint is what we’ll see in Malaga

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-006.jpg

The breakaway is caught with almost 15 kms to go. They decided not to put a big fight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-007.jpg

In the final 5 kms pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Trillini made a huge acceleration after a corner, which brought with him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Weber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift saw this and attacked to join the move, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert trying to do the same. Coquard’s train remains in calm though

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-008.jpg

´
A couple of 90 degree corners changed completely the race situation with just 2,5 kms to go, and Festina is dominating the finish now, but riders should have in count the 65 km/h headwind that they will face in the sprint. It could be a sprint of the “last to get out of slipstream wins”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard has jumped in Festina’s train, but instead of Coquard’s wheel, the Aussie is ahead of him

The wind and the pass through the city of Malaga has provoked some splits in the bunch, but jury could decide against all gaps later

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-009.jpg

Big mess-up in Festina’s train, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard gets completely blocked by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, with Santos getting away from him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard is also blocked, but it gets worse as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli storms close to the left fences bringing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift on his wheel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-010.jpg

Inside of the final km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli still leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, who looks really confortamble, as the rest of sprinters had lose all speed and now had to start their sprint from low speed and with superstrong headwind. And the current situation is a disaster for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, who is around place 12 in the sprint and could lose the Red Jersey today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is starting his sprint only with 600 metres to go. Seems quite improbable that he’s losing the stage win today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard looks like his biggest competitor, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli destroying pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel hopes as he drops back after his fantastic leadout. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen is making a big progression in the center of the road, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard are fighting against each other to get close to the fences

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-012.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ben Swift wins in Malaga! Third stage win for the British rider in the last 4 days, who could become the new GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-013.jpg

Howard finishes second after holding up a charging Chen, who settles for a great third place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-014.jpg

No one saw him during all sprint, but Kennaugh made one of the best ever comebacks in a sprint, only to get fourth place ahead of Coquard. Samolenkov gets sixth ahead of Kupfernagel, Van der Lijke and both Desigual sprinters, Zabel and Maksimov, that round up the Top10 of today’s stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-015.jpg

The bunch was basically splitted in two groups today, and the latter group with almost 100 riders lost 4 minutes. No big GC favourites in there, but some outsiders like Haig (basically all Bennelong team expect for Howard in this group), Chamorro, Kozhatayev and a lot of riders that might had a Top50 target that don’t start the race with the right feet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-07-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ben Swift not only has taken the win today, but he also becomes the new GC leader! Though he doesn’t enjoy a massive gap, as Coquard is only 2 seconds behind, with Howard sitting in third 4 seconds behind.

Anyway, Coquard retains the Points Jersey with a 1-point gap over Swift and 3 points over Howard
