Giro d'Italia - Stage 16
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0212.jpg

The day after the big Galibier stage sees a basically pan flat stage for the sprinters. With Avelino and Ciolek, two big ones have left the race and the situation today is different for that reason.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare the big favourite for performance reasons and also due to being the best "climber" alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Docker, who also got a train on a previous stage. So if spent energy on the recent mountain stages plays a role today, those two must be watched, though later has not the speed needed normally.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0215.jpg

The regular 5 rider breakaway. Surely hoping that the sprinter legs and team numbers are limited today and this way surprising with a flat stage coup.

Later might use todays stage to get his rythm back after the mountains prior to the ITT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0224.jpg

3 teams chasing. Puma with Mager and Hadi were expected.
Sauber with R.Costa and Per as well with stage winner Saber being one of the top sprinters.

And today for the first time in this race also Aegon up there with Dumoulin mainly. Does this mean, Groenewegen is sprinting now with two other top sprinters having left? This would probably make him the first challenger of Demare as the top speed is there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0227.jpg

The only "difficulty" today is a short climb where Aegon with 1, Philips with 2 and Puma now with 5 riders as also Sütterlin, Cavagna and Bongiorno are working. With 21km to go just 68s gap and the break is in sight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0234.jpg

With 5km to go the break is almost caught. Fejes as last still trying it but as also Bongiorno, Dekker and Henao Montoya were working, the sprinter teams successfully made it a sprint finish today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0236.jpg

A lot of blue today as both Philips and Aegon take over from Porto and Aker in the attempt to form a train. As it`s a first it`s still a bit mixed between both teams while Puma on the other side is having a bit more room but also not yet 100% organized with Demare having 1-2 bike lengths gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0249.jpg

Aegon and Philips still fusion to a long train with Martinelli ahead of Saber and then the rest of their own train.

Docker, Mansilla and Tzortzakis remain behind Saber while Silvestre and Bertilsson just like Hayakawa slowly concentrate to the right behind Demare, who has found Felline`s wheel. And also Evonic`s Becis is up there next to the French.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0251.jpg

Krieger taking over from Navardauskas and Chen/Martinelli behind him ahead of Saber. Not ideal for Philips.

And also not ideal for Aegon itself as Sbaragli is doing a strong leadout but opening a gap to Groenewegen. Is he back to his Giro 2018 form and not being interested anymore?

Puma as well with the problem of Hadi being not able to leadout and it is all about Felline now with 1,2km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0255.jpg

Sbaragli surely is doing a great job now moving into the pole position with 800m to go while Demare is in the wind!
Behind Bertilsson and Becis first and then Groenewegen slowly closing the gap and Hayakawa.

On the Philips side still Saber being a bit behind his two team mates and Chen while Docker, Tzortzakis, Mansilla have clearly decided for the wrong train to follow and also Silvestre not well placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0264.jpg

400m and Groenewegen coming around Sbaragli on the left having a very high speed.
Bertilsson back to his first week form and on par with Demare ahead of Becis with a surprisingly strong sprint and Hayakawa.

Chen and finally Saber behind having room ahead with Silvestre behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0267.jpg

Bertilsson is slowing down with Demare still at good speed.
Becis so far only in the slipstream and question is if he can accelerate at all.

On the other side Groenewegen being just a tiny bit behind Demare with Saber coming fast as well with a lot of room ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0269.jpg

It`s 50/50 that close to the line. Demare or Groenewegen will surely win while Bertilsson still in 3rd but slower than Saber, Silvestre or Hayakawa. Those go for the next positions clearly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0270.jpg

Photofinish! Not to say who did win the stage but it`s definitely a nice challenge for Demare today with Groenewegen showing some interest.

Bertilsson vs. Saber for 3rd then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Giro/mg18_giro_16_PCM0272.jpg

The riders also don`t know and need to wait.

Behind Saber taking 3rd though, which doesn`t necessarily look like it in this perspective but was correct. Bertilsson and Hayakawa following.

Then Becis and Silvestre with Chen, Docker and Mansilla also top10 and Tzortzakis just 11th and Van Poppel today in 15th after not having made contact first and then decided for the wrong train behind Tzortzakis.

And now the decision was made. Demare is winning the stage! Just millimeters ahead of Groenewegen, who is not given the biggest comeback. The final 300m were a tiny bit uphill with 1-2% at times. This surely was key for Demare to win today and he is back in the sprinter jersey with advantage being on Schleck though.

One more stage to go for the sprinters but 3 to go for the climbers.
