Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 7
Tamijo
Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 7: - San Benedetto del Tronto - San Benedetto del Tronto 160.9 km

Now the final stage of the 2018 Tirreno-Adriatico, the stage start in San Benedetto del Tronto from there moving north along the coast before swinging west into the hills east of the Sibillini Mountains, over a single cat. 3 climb before heading back to San Benedetto del Tronto for several shots laps in the city.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/0.jpg

The final stage will favor the best sprinters unlikely to generate any changes in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/1.jpg

It is another beautiful spring morning in Italy, sunny but we have hard winds at some 40+ km/hour, could potentially provide for a more challenges on the stage than what was expected.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Tratnik opens the stage in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel.

A lot of attempts behind the two, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Vlatos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Jungels, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Dennis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca but the last three does not make it, reeled in by a fast peloton

We have a breakaway of five riders.

They get to the KoM with 3’52”, but neither of them has KoM points and they don’t fight for it, it is all about the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/2.jpg

We are back in San Benedetto del Tronto starting the circuit race, the breakaway dosen’t fight for the intermediate sprint as they haven’t got any use of bonus seconds or points either. Best placed in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Tratnik 36th at 16’21”, they are all equal on flat sections, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel having the best sprint.

The peloton was previously only led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Hugo Boss, but now more teams are taking part starting to cut down the distance, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Franczak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Smirnovs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Rabottini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese

50 km to go distance 2’49

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/3.jpg

A little more than 20 km left, breakaway passing the last intermediate sprint. Distance 1’18”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/4.jpg

With a peloton speed of more than 60 km/hour and crosswinds above 47 km/hour the peloton breaks, just 45 riders in the first part.
These top 20 riders missed the cut:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vogt.

Just 5 km to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/5.jpg

4 km to go
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel attacks from the breakaway, the pursuit is at 24”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/6.jpg

2.5 km to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel he has 31”

In the pursuit now also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran lost contact.

Three trains are up:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Hansen for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Franczak at his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Dakteris and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek

Everyone else unorganized, fighting for position in between the breakaway riders falling back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/7.jpg

1.5 km to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel he has 23”

In the pursuit it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic in front but he just swung of.

Almost side by side :
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Hansen for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme

Right behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Dakteris and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis

On the far left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Docker with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Reinhardt, at the rear of this group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Franczak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi, and behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants side by side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/8.jpg

First under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel with 11”

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, almost on par at the left side of the road pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme.

At Van Stayen wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully who seem to have lost Ciolek, at the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Dakteris

Then in this order pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Hansen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/9.jpg

600 meters left, three rider have now passed van der Poel who now seems well done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen in front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme on each side behind him.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel

3-4 meters further back we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Dakteris with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek on each side behind him.
Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Hansen and then a large cluster of riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Reinhardt and others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/10.jpg

300 meters left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen has further distanced pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme

A very fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek now in 4th positions

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants moving forward fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen wins in San Benedetto del Tronto, to claim his 2nd podium of this tour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/7/15.jpg

Even though we saw a substantial gap from the split, the race commissionaires did not measure any time gab, and the results between top 20 riders was left unchanged.

2014 winner Simone Ponzi wins the race for the 2nd time, in front of Jan Bakelants and Edvald Boasson Hagen

Edvald Boasson Hagen wins the point competition and Adam Phelan the KoM

Hugo Boss wins the team competition and Matej Mohoric the youth.

Only left to say thanks for watching and see you soon for another exiting race.
