Stage 6: Orbetello - Santa Caterina 178.1 km
The stage start in Orbetello, from here moving into the Hills of the Albegna and Fiora passing over several hilly climbs and then into the Pigelleto Nature Reserve for more and harder climbs before the finish in Santa Caterina.
This is the last of the decisive stages, as it is almost impossible that tomorrow’s flat stage will change the GC. The climbs themselves may not be as hard as yesterdays was, but today the longer climbs comes much closer to the finish and may well create some significant time differences, having the three hardest climbs and the final 3 km uphill finish all within the last 60 km.
It is another beautiful spring morning in Italy, sunny with very little wind.
Konovalovas opens the stage attacking after 5 km, at his wheel Schachmann and KoM leader Phelan, but the peloton not willing to see that compo get away.
Another 5 km and it is Zordan with Summerhill giving it a go, soon followed by Stachowiak and Ramos Ticona and a bit later also Ricco and Schachmann again.
The peloton seems reluctant to let the last duo slip away, meanwhile Summerhill takes the points sprint in front of Zordan.
Eventually the peloton let go and we got the 6 rider breakaway of the day.
Maybe not actually, after 30 km another attack from the peloton, it is Jones and Kittel, just before the start of the first KoM they join the breakaway.
We got a very strong breakaway here today, most of them very competent in this terrain, only Kittel not the best option for hilly climbs.
Best placed in GC is Zordan 45th at 14’35” on paper also the strongest. Summerhill take the KoM, Jones get 2 points, virtually 2nd in KoM 5 points behind.
The 2nd cat 3 KoM goes to Zordan and Summerhill takes the 2nd points sprint.
In the peloton we see most of the workload in the hands of Martin, Benito, Prado and van der Poel
Kittel have had troubles already on the first climb, now almost caught by the peloton, on the first cat 2 climb Jones also seems to be in trouble.
58 km left, peloton at 4’00”
Ramos Ticona wins the first cat. 2 in front of Zordan
Zordan the 2nd in front of Ramos Ticona
Over the top a split in the peloton, 11 riders break free.
De Bie, van der Poel, Zardini, Hagen, Bakelants, Ponzi, Cink, Sagan, Kelderman, Wackermann, Van Garderen
The split was closed down on the descent, but we got another acceleration from the peloton as soon as the road heads upwards towards the last cat 2.
Hagen with Bakelants and De Bie
Distance to the breakaway now cut down to just 1’17” by all the action in the peloton, 15 km to the line.
At first Sagan, Bobridge, Boswell, Landa, Ponzi and Van Garderen accelerates up to group Hagen, but with a new acceleration from Bakelants. Boswell, Landa, Ponzi and Van Garderen can’t keep up.
Sagan and Bobridge also struggles to keep up with the intense pressure put up by Hagen, Bakelants and De Bie
Over the top the situation is:
Leading: De Bie, Bakelants, Hagen, Summerhill and Zordan
At 12”
Stachowiak and Ricco
At 39”
Sagan, Ponzi, Ramos Ticona, Van Garderen, Schachmann, Bobridge and Boswell
At 1’11”
Trofimov, Jones, Kelderman
At 1’28”
Landa
At 1’48”
Beltran, Ginanni, Kangert
Selected riders further back:
At 2’11 Claeys
At 2’44 Kwiatkowski
At 2’52 Van Stayen, Mohoric
10 km to the finish line
5 km left
The pursuit with race leader Ponzi and 2nd Van Garderen have gotten a little closer now at 27”, otherwise not much has happened beside the fact that riders from the breakaway has fallen down the ranks, expect Summerhill very impressively still sitting with the very best.
3 km to the finish line, now just the final uphill left.
2nd group with Ponzi now at just 19”
An acceleration from Bobridge close the gap, but leave Boswell and Sagan behind.
2 km left, Hagen accelerates with Bakelants glued opening a small gap to De Bie, another cycle length back Bobridge in front of Ponzi also Van Garderen and Summerhill hanging on.
First under the red kite Hagen still with no measurable distance between the 6 favorites in this group, but Summerhill lost 27” over the last kilometer, another 15” down to Boswell and Sagan
500 meters to go
Hagen still in front with Bakelants sitting in the slipstream, looks like it is between the two.
About 4-5 meters back Bobridge and behind him Ponzi and Van Garderen side by side, De Bie last but hanging in.
Hagen wins in Santa Caterina, in front of Bakelants
De Bie with a great comeback over the last 500 m for 3th in front of Ponzi 4th, Bobridge 5th and Van Garderen 6th, they all lost 9”
At 54” Sagan 7th and at 59” Boswell 8th and a very tired Summerhill coming in at 1’19” to get a well-deserved 9th
Ginanni just beat Kelderman to round of top 10
This was Edvald Boasson Hagen 2nd stage win in a row in this edition, and his 3rd stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico
Even though Simone Ponzi had a difficult stage today he leads the race with 20” to Jan Bakelants and 40” to Edvald Boasson Hagen thereby very like to win the race with only a flat stage left.
Edvald Boasson Hagen took over the point lead from Simone Ponzi, Adam Phelan still leads the KoM, but it is close with both Edvald Boasson Hagen and maybe more likely Carter Jones able to take it on tomorrows stage.
Hugo Boss holds the team lead and Matej Mohoric the youth jersey.
