Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 6
Tamijo
Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 6: Orbetello - Santa Caterina 178.1 km

The stage start in Orbetello, from here moving into the Hills of the Albegna and Fiora passing over several hilly climbs and then into the Pigelleto Nature Reserve for more and harder climbs before the finish in Santa Caterina.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/0.jpg

This is the last of the decisive stages, as it is almost impossible that tomorrow’s flat stage will change the GC. The climbs themselves may not be as hard as yesterdays was, but today the longer climbs comes much closer to the finish and may well create some significant time differences, having the three hardest climbs and the final 3 km uphill finish all within the last 60 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/1.jpg

It is another beautiful spring morning in Italy, sunny with very little wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Konovalovas opens the stage attacking after 5 km, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann and KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan, but the peloton not willing to see that compo get away.

Another 5 km and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill giving it a go, soon followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Stachowiak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona and a bit later also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Ricco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann again.

The peloton seems reluctant to let the last duo slip away, meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill takes the points sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan.

Eventually the peloton let go and we got the 6 rider breakaway of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/2.jpg

Maybe not actually, after 30 km another attack from the peloton, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel, just before the start of the first KoM they join the breakaway.

We got a very strong breakaway here today, most of them very competent in this terrain, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel not the best option for hilly climbs.

Best placed in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan 45th at 14’35” on paper also the strongest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill take the KoM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones get 2 points, virtually 2nd in KoM 5 points behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/3.jpg

The 2nd cat 3 KoM goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill takes the 2nd points sprint.

In the peloton we see most of the workload in the hands of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Benito, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel have had troubles already on the first climb, now almost caught by the peloton, on the first cat 2 climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones also seems to be in trouble.

58 km left, peloton at 4’00”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona wins the first cat. 2 in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan the 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona

Over the top a split in the peloton, 11 riders break free.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Zardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/5.jpg

The split was closed down on the descent, but we got another acceleration from the peloton as soon as the road heads upwards towards the last cat 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie

Distance to the breakaway now cut down to just 1’17” by all the action in the peloton, 15 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/6.jpg

At first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen accelerates up to group Hagen, but with a new acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen can’t keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge also struggles to keep up with the intense pressure put up by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie

Over the top the situation is:

5 km left
The pursuit with race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and 2nd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen have gotten a little closer now at 27”, otherwise not much has happened beside the fact that riders from the breakaway has fallen down the ranks, expect pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill very impressively still sitting with the very best.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/8.jpg

3 km to the finish line, now just the final uphill left.

2nd group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi now at just 19”

An acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge close the gap, but leave pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/9.jpg

2 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen accelerates with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants glued opening a small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie, another cycle length back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill hanging on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/10.jpg

First under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen still with no measurable distance between the 6 favorites in this group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill lost 27” over the last kilometer, another 15” down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/11.jpg

500 meters to go
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen still in front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants sitting in the slipstream, looks like it is between the two.

About 4-5 meters back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge and behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen side by side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie last but hanging in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni just beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman to round of top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/6/16.jpg

This was Edvald Boasson Hagen 2nd stage win in a row in this edition, and his 3rd stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico

Even though Simone Ponzi had a difficult stage today he leads the race with 20” to Jan Bakelants and 40” to Edvald Boasson Hagen thereby very like to win the race with only a flat stage left.

Edvald Boasson Hagen took over the point lead from Simone Ponzi, Adam Phelan still leads the KoM, but it is close with both Edvald Boasson Hagen and maybe more likely Carter Jones able to take it on tomorrows stage.

Hugo Boss holds the team lead and Matej Mohoric the youth jersey.
