Tour of the Battenkill Preview
The seventh edition of the Tour of the Battenkill is imminent and this race has received a bump up from being a CT race last season to a WT race this time around. This off course means that defending champion Tyler Farrar is not here to defend his crown but former winner Summerhill is here to try to win for a second time. Also present is two-time former winner Baugnies for wildcard team Kulczyk. The hills on the course will surely add to the level of difficulty, and will provide a chance to some of the punchers to perhaps try to catch out the Northern Classics specialists.
| HIL | STA | COB | SPR | ACC | Bewley | 71 | 78 | 83 | 83 | 83 | Van Avermaet | 75 | 77 | 81 | 77 | 77 | Summerhill | 73 | 76 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Trentin | 74 | 76 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Baugnies | 72 | 80 | 80 | 65 | 73 | Senechal | 67 | 79 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Wisniowski | 71 | 75 | 80 | 73 | 76 | Stallaert | 67 | 76 | 81 | 79 | 76 | Vanbilsen | 69 | 80 | 80 | 72 | 71 | Polanc | 73 | 78 | 78 | 67 | 75 | Altur | 70 | 75 | 81 | 72 | 68 | Daniel | 69 | 76 | 80 | 76 | 72 | Tsatevich | 77 | 74 | 75 | 75 | 75 | Sulimov | 70 | 77 | 79 | 65 | 71 | Teunissen | 66 | 77 | 81 | 67 | 69 |
No surprises for guessing the top favourite in this race! Sam Bewley is the bookies' favourite despite giving up some puncher abilities to rival Summerhill. However, the former's supreme energy and support stats serve as a huge advantage in attritional races such as this.
Greg Van Avermaet, ever the bridesmaid to arch-rival Bewley, once again is touted as the closest competition. His superiority in the hills, in the sprint and in acceleration will give him the edge over Summerhill if it comes down to a bunch sprint. The Belgian has shown that it is possible to beat Bewley, claiming a couple of victories on the cobbles over his rival. He would surely be hoping for a repeat of the same.
Danny Summerhill, once again, is the favourite to round out the podium along with the above mentioned superstars of the cobbles. He would be hoping to use his slightly superior skills on the cobbles to make a difference to the likes of Van Avermaet. His advantage over Bewley lies in the hills.
Matteo Trentin is a well rounded cobbles specialist and probably the biggest podium threat outside the big three.
Senechal would be hoping for an easier race over the inclines, as that is definitely his weakness for a profile like this. Riders like Baugnies, Wisniowski, Polanc, Altur, Tsatevich and Sulimov will be hoping for the exact opposite. Baugnies and Sulimov are the worst off in terms of sprinting abilities and will be hoping to avoid a sprint from a (reduced) bunch at the finish. Senechal and Teunissen, despite the former's high rating, give up some ground in both hills and sprints to their competitors.
Stallaert is the best sprinter other than Bewley and will be hoping the bunch sticks together and decide the race via a bunch sprint, not that his cobbles abilities are weak by any means.
| HIL | STA | COB | SPR | ACC | Kamyshev | 65 | 81 | 82 | 66 | 60 | Potts | 74 | 74 | 76 | 68 | 71 | Ringheim | 67 | 75 | 78 | 73 | 75 | Declerq | 73 | 73 | 77 | 67 | 67 | Lagab | 71 | 72 | 76 | 72 | 74 | Benoot | 75 | 73 | 75 | 69 | 69 | Laporte | 73 | 72 | 75 | 72 | 73 | Boroš | 73 | 73 | 77 | 64 | 66 | Young | 69 | 74 | 75 | 78 | 77 | Langeveld | 71 | 77 | 75 | 62 | 72 | Sibilla | 63 | 72 | 81 | 66 | 64 | Polnicky | 72 | 74 | 75 | 63 | 70 | Spengler | 63 | 70 | 80 | 59 | 70 | Bohli | 67 | 77 | 75 | 74 | 68 | Joseph | 66 | 76 | 76 | 66 | 70 | Schlechter | 72 | 71 | 75 | 61 | 66 | Zubov | 63 | 70 | 79 | 61 | 69 | Lhotellerie | 64 | 75 | 77 | 59 | 69 | Nooytens | 64 | 76 | 76 | 69 | 67 | Puccio | 66 | 76 | 78 | 60 | 55 |
It is quite difficult to predict how such a hybrid race will play out. As such, the list of outsiders is a long one. Names which immediately stand out here include Kamyshev, who's poor climbing skills are likely to hurt him considerably, Sibilla and Spengler, both of whom are not the strongest in terms of their support stats for this profile.
| HIL | COB | ACC | Vogt | 80 | 58 | 63 | Watson | 78 | 57 | 72 | Paulinho | 78 | 56 | 75 | Landa | 78 | 50 | 69 | Barbin | 78 | 57 | 76 | Borges | 78 | 54 | 81 | Edet | 77 | 53 | 71 | Tsatevich | 77 | 75 | 75 | Gebrezgabihier | 77 | 53 | 67 | Smirnovs | 77 | 68 | 78 | Furdi | 77 | 65 | 72 | Senyenov | 77 | 60 | 73 | Zordan | 77 | 53 | 74 | Mudarra | 77 | 51 | 68 | Kump | 77 | 73 | 80 | Vanendert | 77 | 63 | 71 | Afonso | 77 | 52 | 70 | Zakarin | 77 | 61 | 73 |
Some of the punchers who'll be looking to attack on the numerous inclines and possibly catch out the favourites are mentioned above. Tsatevich is the best cobbles rider in the group while Borges and Kump boast superb acceleration stats allowing for explosive attacks out of the group.

One of my favourite races! Gonna be a blast to watch for sure! Bewley should be the clear favourite here, but should be a good race regardless!

No way a puncheur is going to win this. This will be Bewley vs Van Avermaet vs Summerhill as usual.

Oh yeah
My team is perfectly build for a race like this with De Vreese, Becis, Budenieks, Smirnovs and Bekmanis all quite capable on a route like this plus solid cobblers/rouleurs like Nooytens and Neilands to complete the support. A podium is a must.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Go on Jerome, show these soft, coddled PT riders how to race the Battenkill.
Thanks for the preview Abhi, looking forward to this one!

Don't really know what to expect here... Weber is obviously not here to help Maxime Daniel, but I hope the combination of Archimandritis, Karatzios and Kastrantas can stay in the front for a sufficient amount of time for him to save energy to the final.
A top 10 is a must for us to stay competitive in the PT top 5 - especially as we must expect Evonik to score massively here. We need to outscore Vesuvio to get close enough to them to stand a chance of overtaking them in the end (Which I doubt is realistic though!)
Similarly we need as much gain as possible over T-Mobile going into a finale where we believe van Garderen alone will outscore us.
Gazelle could be the big winner in the battle for the top 3, and they have a decent shot at a good result here to start the climb with the Teunissen/Potts combination.

Amazing stuff from Maxime Daniel to get back on his own to claim 8th. Looking at how unfortunate he was, that was absolutely brilliant - but looking at how strong he was, also very bad as he could clearly have gotten a top 5 atleast here.
Decent result though, which can be used to claw back on Vesuvio, aswell as decent fight to keep Evonik, Isostar and Gazelle behind. A good gap to T-Mobile is also very nice.

If I have to give 1 reason why it went all wrong this season, it's Vanbilsen completely collapsing in the end despite his 80 stamina.
Thanks for the report.

Thinking about the effort Wisniowski put down to catch the front four, I didn't really think he could contest for the win in the end, but all in all another brilliant ride from him. He's been on a really high level lately, so that's awesome to se. Congrats to Roman on the classic Bewley win!

Thank you for a nice report, Abhishek!
I'm on holiday, so I missed this race thread going up, but definitely a nice surprise to see the race. Trentin with a good showing. Hoped for a podium seeing the group that went away, as he also seemed to do little of the work, but not being strong enough is a fair case. At least he was well positioned this time! And with three more riders in the top 50, this was a good race for us, and also a very much needed one, seeing the standings posted pre-Battenkill. |

We expected a decent ride by Declerq here, with the hilly profile suiting his abilities. Sadly, this was a shit race by him and 32nd is a joke.
