A mostly flat Stage 2 of the Ronde van Nederland today, and a chance for the likes of Ahlstrand or Cavendish to set the record straight after yesterday's uphill finish saw them usurped by the likes of new yellow jersey Demare or Van Stayen. The latter as a more natural sprinter will look to peg back a few bonuses today, but the battle between those two and Kump will be an intriguing storyline as they attempt to collect as many bonus seconds at the finish to give them a buffer over the puncheurs - and each other!
However, we can't call today entirely flat - it features three different climbs repeated on a loop for over 1000m of vertical gain. None too hard, and only one worth of a KoM point, repeated three times and with 18 points on offer any rider could threaten the lead of Schachmann. Of course unless they got points yesterday they'd need a countback win and... I have no idea how that works.
The breakaway formed first-time today, and again five got away:
Weiss (3rd KoM, 8pts and 13th GC, 0'23)
Polnicky (104th GC, 0'25)
van Zyl
Trakhov
Bohli.
Weiss as the big KoM challenger but as we mentioned earlier, mathematically anyone could do it! How did he - and the rest - fare in the sprints today?
KoM #1 Weiss Van Zyl Polnicky Sprint #1 Weiss Polnicky Bohli KoM #2 Weiss Polnicky Van Zyl Sprint #2 Weiss Bohli Polnicky KoM #3 Weiss Polnicky Bohli
The American going hard for every point today, even in the intermediate sprints!
Evonik, Puma and T-Mobile doing a lot of gap maintenance, and they've kept the five up ahead on a nice leash. 60km to go and 2'26 the gap.
50km and 1'33
40km and 39'
32km and... caught! eBuddy now also coming towards the front and helping set tempo as the final sprint approaches.
8km to go, the final speedbump dealt with and it's Van Avermaet-Dzamastagic-Van Staeyen at the front, and I must say that's an awfully long leadout!
To his credit though, Dzamastagic proves every day he's more than a pilot fish, and is taking the 8-2km pull by himself! 5km to go and the other sprinters seem happy to follow this for now, Cavendish- Grosu- Vesely- Kristoff- Boeckmans- Howard- Groenewegen- Ahlstrand- Houle- Demare- Kump behind Van Staeyen.
However it's not smooth sailing at all here! First Hagen's Air France disrupt the Evonik train, and now Matteo Trentin hits the front with pace with Vesely, Contreras and Zabel in tow!
Van Avermaet up the middle now with Van Staeyen and Kristoff behind! A mess of sprinters behind, none organised except the Evonik, Aker and Desigual duos!
Van Avermaet opens up with 2.7km let and is drawing away, meanwhile Groenewegen is trying to get to Vesely's wheel, and Kump is trying to follow the Dutchman, but everyone is getting left behind by these trains!
Zabel decides Contreras isn't fast enough and hops across to Kristoff's wheel, whilst Groenwegen hops onto his. Trentin losing ground and now Demare and Ahlstrand forced to go very early to get across! Dzamastagic, Cavendish, Grosu and Howard enjoying free rides from those two.
Demare, Ahlstrand, Cavendish, Grosu, Dzamastagic and Howard (almost!) are across and now it's Houle and Kump with a gap to close!
1.6km left and Ahlstrand decides not to slow down, but to use his speed and slingshot out of Demare's slipstream to get the drop on Van Staeyen! Cavendish and Grosu following.
Kump, Wyss, Houle and Boeckmans are almost across to Howard and Dzamastagic now, but again there's a fairly sizeable gap behind of around 8-10 seconds!
Ahlstrand being at top speed has gained him a lot of ground, but does he have 1300m left in his legs before the lactic acid kicks in? Van Staeyen goes now at the front, Kristoff tucked in behind whilst Groenewegen and Grosu also aren't launched in the wind yet.
Ahlstrand hits the front under the flamme rouge, whilst Demare with a fantastic acceleration has drawn level with Zabel despite having to go around Van Avermaet!
900m left and Van Staeyen regains the lead and Ahlstrand clearly tires now! Zabel took a while but is hitting top speed and even gaining on Van Staeyen, as is Groenewegen. Cav also looking a bit tired here.
Ahlstrand hanging in there, 700m to go and it looks like Demare vs Van Staeyen vs Zabel as Kristoff is struggling to come around the green jersey.
Kump and Vesely regaining some ground and the former will push for 6th or 7th here coming faster than Groenewegen or Grosu. Ahlstrand slipping further back and Zabel/Demare level with Kristoff, still 3/4 of a bike length behind Van Staeyen! KRistoff to his credit isn't going slow here, probably a similar speed of Demare here. Slowly moving up on Van Staeyen, and with 600m to go it's possible for any of them!
Grosu coming out of the wheel now with some pace, whilst Demare is fading ever so slightly!
300m to go and after a long sprint, Kristoff is gaining on Van Staeyen, just a wheel's difference! Grosu could come through for third here as well.
Oh and in the last 100m Kristoff overturns it... and takes the victory! Crushing for Van Staeyen, pipped after leading for a kilometre or more! A powerful long sprint from both, but Kristoff found something extra in the last 300m!
Another close finish behind as Grosu pips Zabel for third. A great sprint from the young German, which he'll be pleased with. And a big statement with his co-leader Maksimov nowhere to be seen. Demare in fifth may cede the yellow jersey to Van Staeyen actually!
Vesely with a second wind to overhaul Kump for sixth, a tale of what might have been for these two after a fast finish from a poor position.
Houle will be annoyed with no bonuses in 11th, but really wasn't expecting to be top 10 I guess! Howard just beats Ahlstrand and Boeckmans for 8th as they round out the top 10.
And confirmation here that through bonuses Van Staeyen will take the yellow jersey off of Demare... by a single second!
