Boily has shocked the top climbers yesterday by gaining quite some time. Today is his first test in the mountains. It`s the easier of two mountain stages or at least the one without a mountain top finish!
Early on a break of 26 riders attacked at the Cat.3 and actually included quite a lot of big names such as Velits, Marquez or Garby. No surprise that the peloton wasn`t happy and brought them back.
The following group of 4 now has a gap of just 1min on the next uphill section. And again a surprisingly strong group.
Marquez, Velits, Bonnin, Sarmiento.
As first two are some of the best climbers and "just" 3'20 behind, the pace behind is really fast. In fact Carlsberg`s Öste-Macdonald is chasing hard as Garby missed the group this time!
And incredibly small field of just 40 riders in the first peloton! This makes 126 riders got surprised and lots of GC riders within those such as
Wellens, Hirt, Yates, Bennett, Penasa, Schelling, Nibali, Preidler, Dombrowski, Senni, Ji, Chaves, Beltran.
Seeing those are almost all but a few such as Sicard/Boily/Kudus, Talansky it might be unlikely that the situation remains the same.
Marquez did good to collect quite some early KoM points but after teh Cat.4 they were caught again by Carlsberg and immediately a new attack and obviously Garby made it this time alongside Bonnin, who also has collected some points early on.
And with the pace being slower now, the two favourite groups merge again and the last 110km hopefully are slower as sprinters are already dropped.
Garby takes the next Cat.4 with Bonning behind him and they got accompany in Velits, who does not give up and as the gap is at 2'30, the GC riders seem to be fine with the break.
Going up the Cat.1 and the gap still around 2-3 min several riders were able to bridge to them.
Dall'Oste
Ranaweera
Ivanov
Martinez
Topchanyuk
Surprisingly Dall-Oste also takes the KoM. Not really surprising that he goes for it as he is a known KoM hunter with a Giro d'Italia KoM in his palmares but it`s surprising as Velits, Bonnin or Garby were expected to go for it.
Virtual KoM has bonning on 24 points now ahead of Boily and Dall'Oste both at 16 now!
Marquez who earned early KoM points missed the group, and so he did attack with 70km to go and now with 40km to go he still is in between almost caught by the peloton again...desperate move and just costing him energy so far as the break is 2min ahead.
He remained in front of the peloton though until 25km to go!
The break did split on the long climb and it`s Velits/Garby being the strongest followed by Bonnin. So it`s the early riders.
The Cat.2 was won by Velits with Garby, Bonnin, Ivanov and Topchanyuk following. Virtually Bonning leading with 30 over Velits 25 and Garby 17 now. Same top 3 at the Cat.4 which means Bonnin will be the new leader leading 1 points over Velits!
15km left and it`s just the final climb now and the descent towards the finish.
Velits goes solo now with only Garby and Bonnin in between as teh peloton or reduced favourite group is coming next then.
Dombrowski has to attack to gain time he lost on Sicard and Boily. And with 13km he has done so.
He quickly is up to Garby, trying to join Velits.
6km and there it is. Shortly before the top of the climb Dombrowski reached Velits but unfortunately for him the pace behind was high and so the gap never was big.
Sicard using this and jumps to them without spending a lot of energy.
Behind Ji is trying to chase for his team mate and GC leader Boily.
4km and over the top a lot of GC riders try to accelerate to also jump to the trio in front.
Hirt, Beltran, Kudus, Yates, Wellens, Boily, Penasa, Nibali, Schelling, Talansky, Preidler, Chaves, Bennett all are the first chasers of the trio as Garby and Bonnin are caught in the meantime.
And also Velits can`t follow after his break today. He is dropped into the next group of 13 riders with most other GC riders and just 1,9km to go.
It`s 33s so far, not enough to beat Boily.
And another 34s for the next group where Bennett, Ji, Brenes, Garby or Chernetskiy are the biggest names.
The win though was between the two strongest climbers and while being very equally in the sprint, Sicard takes it by a small amount gaining more bonus seconds.
26s in the end for the others. Kudus leads them over the line ahead of Beltran, Hirt and Boily! Another day in yellow for the Canadian.
Nibali and Velits has lost a bit in the end and arrive at 36 and 48s.
Then Bennett and De la Cruz at 1'02 and more within the next 20s including Senni, Garby, Squire etc.
