166.7 kilometers left and we know the conclusion of the Criterium du Dauphine Libere. The stage starts in Saint-Alban-Leysse and finishes in Morzine. The Col du Joux Plane is the main attraction twelve kilometers before the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/02.jpg

Right from the get-go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Haig (GC 9th, +10'44) attacks! Interesting move from the Australian. Behind him goes KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca, as if he doesn't have enough points already. There are 70 points available today, but he leads by 40 over his nearest rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Buchmann.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/03.jpg

Halfway up the first climb (Col de Plainpalais, cat 1) we have a good look of the breakaway:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Haig
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Buchmann
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Portela
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Fuchs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Blikra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Cuasquer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Chevrier

So both protagonists for the KoM battle are present. RBC currently allows a gap of two minutes, wonder how far they'll go before other teams realize the danger in Haig's presence.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca went way to early and completely blew himself up. Chevrier takes the sixteen points, with Buchmann twelve and Haig ten. Mosca with seventh place for a mere two points. The peloton, reduced to 96 riders, is at four minutes and still no real panic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/05.jpg

The Italian takes his revenge and wins the next category three climb ahead of Buchmann, extending the gap back to 32 with 48 on the table. The gap is 5 minutes with 118 kilometer to go. Haig now virtually passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tenorio, and dangerously close to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Kritskiy. Yet none of these riders feel the urge to help RBC in the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/06.jpg

The gap reached six minutes before it triggered Desigual, and now Tenorio's men put the hammer down to not let this one get out of hand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/07.jpg

Meanwhile, Mosca sticks to Buchmann's wheel for the entire third category climb and overtakes him right at the end to extend the gap by another two points. The German needs to take full points at the remaining first and hors category climb. With 97 kilometer to go the gap is back to a manageable 3'49, but Desigual hands the reign back to RBC and as a result the gap slightly increases again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/08.jpg

Col de la Colombière and Mosca is dropped. He will not take any more points for the mountain jersey today, and has to hope Buchmann doesn't go on a monster ride. Edet and Portela are dropped as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/09.jpg

Buchmann fights for dear life but the pace set by Chevrier and Haig is too big. Kastrantas and Cuasquer suffer the same fate. Fuchs takes the 16 points on offer at the top, ahead of Chevrier, Haig and Blikra. Buchmann battles his way to fifth for six points, reducing the gap to 28. There are only 26 points remaining though, so the King of the Mountain title goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Jacopo Mosca!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/10.jpg

The peloton did not pass the Colombière quietly as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Kozhatayev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Brändle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Laengen attack just before the top and have a minute entering the downhill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Novikov tries to join the trio. Blikra couldn't follow the pace of the other breakaway survivors and is now with Buchmann just ahead of the other dropped riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/11.jpg

No contest at a category three climb, since things are settled anyway. Haig takes points and might even get third place if he's the first to pass the Joux Plane as well. Six of the seven dropped riders are at 1'34, group Brändle + Edet at 2'33 and the peloton, including Novikov, at 3'51. 67 riders remaining there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/12.jpg

Group Brändle merged with the former breakaway members 7k before the top of the Col de Joux Plane, which isn't satisfactory to Kozhatayev as he immediately attacks. The leading trio is 2'20 ahead of them, the peloton 1'41 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/13.jpg

Haig says goodbye to Chevrier and Fuchs and goes solo, possibly chasing the stage victory next to a leap in the GC. Laengen goes in pursuit of Kozhatayev but both are not quite closing in on the leader. Brändle and the rest have been caught. No action in the peloton as of yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/14.jpg

And that all changes when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tenorio attacks! Threat Haig has been contained, so now the Spaniard can look forward and maybe take a podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/15.jpg

He quickly establishes a minute's lead with 2000 meters to the top. He joins up with teammate Kozhatayev, who gives him a nice pull. Laengen has been caught while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Kritskiy launches an attack as he now smells the danger of losing GC places. That caused a chain reaction with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo all following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/16.jpg

Pluchkin goes! He needs 1'27 on Phinney so he has to attack if he wants to win the race. Tenorio left Kozhatayev behind and goes after Haig, while group Phinney was caught by a larger group containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Reis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Nerz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Marquez and such.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/17.jpg

Haig is done climbing and all that separates him from the stage win is a short downhill to Morzine. With the twenty points for crossing the Joux Plane first, he climbs to third in the mountain classification. He will also win the youth classification, and likely win the stage and jump a few places in the GC. What an amazing race for the young Australian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/18.jpg

Tenorio and Fuchs at 1'04. Then Pluchkin close behind and ready to join them on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/19.jpg

Chevrier and Madrazo next, the Spaniard opening up a small gap before the top. 1'46 has passed since Haig.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/20.jpg

Kritskiy, Phinney, Sicard, Denifl, Kozhatayev, Galta. 2'07 to Haig, and 1'03 to Tenorio/Pluchkin. Phinney needs help, because his GC is hanging by a thread, especially if Pluchkin snatches away bonus seconds at the finish.

Marquez, Reis and Nerz a further 35 seconds behind this group, with a small gap to a larger peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/21.jpg

Sicard leads on the downhill with Phinney behind. They caught up to Madrazo, Chevrier and Fuchs, but Tenorio and Pluchkin are still out there, keeping their gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/22.jpg

The two can spot Haig a turn ahead, with a gap given around 25 seconds. Will they be able to deny the Australian the stage victory?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/23.jpg

Phinney takes over from Sicard. We are told the gap to Pluchkin is 59 seconds. That would make the American GC winner regardless of bonifications.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/24.jpg

One kilometer left for Haig, but Tenorio and Pluchkin are rapidly approaching. Can he hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/25.jpg

He can! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Jack Haig wins the final stage in Morzine after attacking in the first few kilometers!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tenorio third. They are given the same time as Haig, so unless Phinney finishes within 1 minute and 15 seconds, Pluchkin wins the GC.

1 minute has passed...

1 minute and five seconds have passed...

Here he comes...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/27.jpg

Ten, eleven, twelve! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Taylor Phinney goes through the eye of the needle and wins the Criterium du Dauphine Libere by three seconds! Pluchkin must be thinking, where could I have gained three seconds throughout this race?

Kristkiy sprints to fifth place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/28.jpg

Sixth place on the stage for Galta, ahead of Sicard, Madrazo, Fuchs, Denifl and Chevrier. All in the same time as Phinney and Kritskiy (+1'12). This means Tenorio takes the final place on the podium, overtaking Madrazo, Kritskiy and Sicard, who will finish fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Kozhatayev finishes twelfth at 2'05.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/29.jpg

Marquez thirteenth, + 2'55. Then Reis and Nerz at 3'19. The Portugese drops from seventh to ninth in the GC, while Haig goes the other way around. Galta between them in eight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S8/30.jpg

A larger group, containing Schelling, Abal and Olivier amongst others, is given the same time as Reis and Nerz. Schelling lost his top ten classification to Denifl, Abal remains twelfth while Olivier lost thirteenth place to Marquez by milliseconds.

Phinney also wins the points classification, and his RBC wins the teams classification. Mosca and Haig won the KoM and youth classification respectively as stated earlier.
