The mountain time trial on the program today. 13,2km might not be the longest and the top riders are very equal in strength and biggest gaps aren`t expected. But having a good or bad day can be important here.
Guldhammer as GC leader is having a 20s gap to Machado and 32s to Dombrowski. Both are rated higher today and question is if the gap is large enough to defend it!
Others such as Amador, Morton or Schleck follow with ~1min and while this is quite a gap, it`s also quite a strength difference in pure climbing.
Alarcon as last top climber being 1'21 behind but the purest mountain goat!
Cattaneo is the first in the live pictures. As 38th he surely is a bit further behind than wanted but today he shows his skills.
New best time and he is ~30s ahead of Carapaz. Ablenado 1min behind, Kirsch and Goos another few seconds more. So that`s about the time difference between a late top10 climber and a top25 climber. And also KoM leader Vosekalns is in the range of Goos/Kirsch.
Alarcon as 23rd will surely improve today. 2nd on the "flatter" part early on but then with a new best at the 2/3 time having gained 20s on Cattaneo in that middle section and now being 17s ahead!
Obviously continueing to gain in the final part and it`s 38s in total! Was this the winner time already or can the others beat it? At least shows that the time gaps can be a bit bigger between strong climbers.
Henao Montoya is a similar climber as Cattaneo and as weaker time trialist he might only lack on the first section, where he lost 11s on the Italian. He is a bit faster on the climb itself and finishes 6s behind in 3rd position. 44s to Alarcon though!
Abal another very solid stage racer with main strength on climbing and TTs. Still losing 13s on Cattaneo early on and beign a bit weaker climber also going to lose on the next parts.
1'05 to Alarcon, which is ~25s on the others and provisional 4th.
Hirt being an equally good climber as Abal and is doing just a bit better in the attempt to defend his 10th in the GC. 59s in the end, which means he is dropping behind Alarcon and also Henao Montoya but stays ahead of Abal!
Meanwhile other climbers such as Nibali, Dekker or Choi are in the finish. They lose around 2min on Alarcon! Which is also ~30s to direct opponents in the fight for the late top10 positions such as Abal, Henao, Hirt, who are better climbers and being the favourites for those spots.
Schleck is a rider that could become a threat for Alarcon`s time. His ride is good. Just 6s on the flat part, which is 3s to Alarcon and those 3s remain in the middle sector.
Who is having the better last sector? Time will tell.
The top climbers now coming one after the other. Morton next and similar as Schleck. 1s faster in the first, then 1s slower in the 2nd. 4s off so far with 2/3 done.
Amador might be the most complete top stage racer here. Next to being one of the best climbers, he also does best on time trials, which might play a big role in the 3rd week. Today it`s a good ride. Only losing 2s to Cattaneo`s best early on which makes him 2nd there. Then remaining 2nd with only 3s to Alarcon, who is still having the best middle sector.
Lecuisinier might not be one of the very best climbers but a very complete stage racer as well and probably the best of the rest and with solid chances for a top5-7 here. Today he will lose a bit but less than Cattaneo. 20s only the loss after the 2nd sector.
Dombrowski often showed that uphill he is one of the best and on some days even the very best. Today he is not able to go as fast as Alarcon but is still doing fine with the s.t. as Schleck/Amador after 8,5km!
Machado is a bit behind the very best and next to Lecuisinier the one to fight for the spots behind them or in case of someone struggling, being there to pass them.
A solid time today being in the top10 surely and 15s down only at the moment.
It will be hard for Guldhammer to defend the lead. He is already 38s down in provisional 12th. It`s the expected loss seeing riders such as Abal, Hirt in that range as well.
The best come to the finish and now it`s not long until we know if anyone of them has a great final sector to beat Alarcon`s time!
First Schleck and his time is good. Just not good enough. It remains 3s to Alarcon! Provisional 2nd.
Morton, who already was a tiny bit slower before remains as weaker performer today. It`s 7s in the end. Pretty much nothing in comparison to a good mountain stage, but it`s a loss to direct rivals!
Amador as well lost a bit in the final bit. 6s for him and moving in between Schleck and Morton.
Though he is the big favourite against those other top 84 climbers in the 30km ITT, which is flat. There he should be able to gain a lot more time than those few seconds lost today. When being able to climb with the best, this might even make him top favourite to win the Giro! Though palmares wise Dombrowski, Alarcon, Schleck might still count as those that gain the time in the mountains.
Lecuisinier also in now and losing a bit more than half a minute, which is a solid time and faster than Cattaneo or Henao as equal climbers. As said, he might be best of the rest.
Dombrowski the last to beat the time? No! He comes over the line 4s slower than Alarcon, which is 1s slower than Schleck but a bit faster than Amador/Morton.
The top5 climbers all within 7s though, which is basically nothing.
Machado then following as 5th at 25s will give it a nice fight and also shows Lecuisinier, that he is the better climber even at 33! Though it will be interesting to see them in 3rd week as Cattaneo, Lecuisinier, Hirt etc. will have an advantage then surely. On the other hand Alarcon has shown with 2 GT wins that the recovery advantage might not be as big as you`d think.
Guldhammer as final rider at the top as 11th just over the 1min gap.
GC wise this means Dombrowski is taking over 9s ahead of Machado and 25s to Amador! Guldhammer drops to 4th and still solid at 26s, 1s ahead of Morton with Schleck and Alarcon following next. Cattaneo up to 24th and surely climbing with the mountain stages to come, even though also a few more hill stages in between, which didn`t work out well yesterday.
