The Giro shows up in France with a finish on the Col du Galibier (18km, 6,9%) and after passing the Col du Mont Cenis (25km, 6,3%) and Col du Teelgraphe (12km, 7%). A day to suffer in the saddle clearly.
For the GC riders though it`s one of the biggest days and you can win or lose big today.
Early on 7 Meiji riders chasing with their GC rider Choi sitting 3 spots behind them with only Schleck and a helper in between!
What is the wild card team planning here? Surely they were planning to send him into the breakaway today which didn`t work.
This is obviously not good news for the 5, that have been successful in the early move.
Vosekalns the obvious attacker
Foliforov
Quintana (15th GC)
Reguigui
Bongiorno (18th GC)
20km later at the start of the Col du Mont Cenis the break is caught! Meiji did their job here on the descent.
And this was obvious.
If Choi hadn`t attacked now, the tactic would have been questionable. But he immediately goes.
With him Laengen, Fraile and Janse van Rensburg.
The situation was similar with Mager working for Puma on the first half of the climb and it was for this one move. Bongiorno was in the early break but didn`t attack with Choi. Though now with 12km to the top, he also attacks and is 1'50 behind the break.
The situation behind is calming down again with Kirsch taking over for Vesuvio.
After just 3km Bongiorno made contact while Van Rensburg and Fraille struggled to follow and also Dion Smith did attack once again for the KoM points and is in between the groups now with Vosekalns at least gaining 2 points as 7th but back into the peloton afterwards.
All riders in the front including the two dropped ones and Smith are together after the descent.
More interesting though that just 50s behind them 7 more riders did attack and have a gap of 3'36 over the peloton at the start of the Telegraphe.

EA Vesuvio was quickly down in numbers with Goos being strongest helper as expected but Heymes struggling too early.
eBuddy and Bennelong supporting them but this didn`t hinder Alarcon and Hirt to atttack early with 16km to go. Basically the Galibier has started now.
Their attempt didn`t work as Goos and Van der Velde brought them back. But Alarcon attacks again, this time followed by Lecuisinier and Machado.
They pulled a lot of riders with them and a bit later they are passing parts of the breakaway riders and only Choi, Bongiorno, Fraile and Laengen are ahead when Alarcon goes for the third time!
Behind him a group around most of the GC riders including Schleck but some are missing. Amador as most notable 39s behind plus Guldhammer and Henao Montoya.
Schleck knows that he has to gain time on the Costa Rican and attacks with Dombrowski trying to join Alarcon again.
Amador meanwhile meade it into the Morton/Machado/Lecuisinier and rest of top10 group.
Choi solo in front with Bongiorno following and then already Alarcon! Still 7km to go! Might be too much for the break riders.
Bongiorno now caught and also Schleck and Dombrowski almost up to them.
And then there is Amador! The 2nd in the GC jumped to Schleck and shows his ambition and strength to win the Giro.
Morton, Lecuisinier, Hirt, Guldhammer and Henao Montoya the best of the rest in a group ahead of Machado, Cattaneo and Abal. Once again first losing time by the look of it and later gaining big time on the rivals behind.
Those are Nibali/Dekker mainly which are 50s behind him for the top10-13 spots.
Under the 5km mark Choi is caught by Alarcon, who is strong today. Schleck, Dombrowski, Amador again with a bigger gap and also a smaller gap to the group behind!
And 500m later those two groups come together with only Alarcon and Choi in front now.
Machado with Cattaneo and Abal already 1'20 behind them! And another minute for the next GC group.
2,2km to go and now Dombrowski has accelerated and closed the gap to the first two. Behind Schleck and Amador were able to follow and so were Morton, Henao and Lecuisinier.
Bongiorno is basically staying now but also Guldhammer and Hirt all but looking good.
Schleck with the next acceleration and now also Morton, Henao and Lecuisinier have a gap.
Alarcon in last position but Choi surprisingly still able to stay with them. Must be on a perfect day here.
On the final kilometer already and just around the corner until the finish when Schleck starts the sprint with Choi being able to follow while Alarcon can`t!
Morton up to him and those two are the first chasers!
In front neither Amador nor Choi look to challenge the other two but still Schleck in front!
And it remained like this until the finish line. Yet another big win for Schleck ahead of Dombrowski. With such mountain dominance he also now has passed sprint dominator Demare in the point competition and also closing to Vosekalns in the KoM ranking.
Amador most importantly though not losing a lot of time. 13s in the end plus bonus which makes it 57s in total and slowly Schleck is gaining more and more time before the TT and then there`s still a lot of mountains to climb, where he looks unbeatable at the moment.
Alarcon in 4th ahead of the dropped Choi. But still a stunning performance by him. 31 behind Schleck.
Morton then next at 51s.
Lecuisinier and Henao Montoya at 1'28. Decent ride by both.
And yet again gaining on Machado, who is coming in at 2'09!
Behind him Cattaneo, Abal, Guldhammer and Hirt, who also lost some time today. 2'26 with Bongiorno another 21s later.
Dekker at 3'39 ahead of Nibali 3'51 and Quintana 4'32 with others following in the next 1-2 minutes.
Such a tough stage was too much for several riders. 16 riders in total had to abandon missing the time limit. Most notable Ciolek and Avelino. Some of the strongest sprinters here with a sprint train each but no victory and with a few chances left, they won`t be able to do so in this race.
Porto with 4 riders, Aker with 3 and Air France with 2 in general hit hardest.
And while a 3rd week ITT is often for stage racers and not pure time trialists, some of those abandoning today could have surprised maybe as they are real specialists.
