Tour de Suisse starts with a flat stage between Tubach and Schaffhausen, with 160 kms. But the stage isn’t really that suited for sprinters, as it’s quite bumpy in its final 30 kms, with two KoM climbs and some ups and down in the final kms, that could make another type of riders to contend for the win today. Should it come down to a mass sprint, Avelino, Vesely and Van Poppel are the three main contenders for the win. There are no real punchy sprinters in the race, so no clear favourites in case it gets too hard for those riders, so if Herklotz still has his Vuelta shape, he could start to take wins this week by today
4 riders form the breakaway, that actually took around 50 kms to get formed
Van Niekerk
Balloni
Gretsch
Maccagli
Van Niekerk wins the first intermediate sprint, taking those 6 bonus seconds, ahead of Maccagli and Gretsch
It would Gretsch that one winning the second and last sprint, with Maccagli again second, and Balloni beating Van Niekerk for third. So 8 seconds for Gretsch and Maccagli, 6 for Van Niekerk and 2 for Balloni
Van Niekerk, as best climber/puncheur of the breakaway, would beat the rest in the first climb, the Cat.3 one, with Balloni second and Gretsch third. The bunch was being led by Bennelong, and with 21 kms to go, the gap was around 1’50. Still in control for the bunch, but the breakaway had a real chance to make it
And in the second KoM, Van Niekerk gets surprised by Balloni, which makes them tie at the top of the KoM standings. The bunch is just 45 seconds behind with 15 kms to go, so the breakaway is pretty much over.
A group of around 50 riders has been dropped, including some surprising names like McCarthy, Vosekalns, Reguigui and pretty much every top timetrialist that is here for the TTT on day 3
The breakaway was finally caught with 7 kms to go, so now time for the sprint preparations, though with 3-4 kms to go, there’s one big uphill zone, that maybe someone can use to attack, or to wear down the big sprinters
With less than 3 kms to go, the riders are in that uphill zone, with the sprint trains not really working, as it looks like a messy sprint in Schaffhausen. In the right side we see Aker with Hagen, Lagab and Vesely, with Kemboi following them. In the centre it’s Calmejane with Van Poppel on his wheel, followed by Weber. Avelino is alone in the left side, not sure if already sprinting, or just positioning himself, with Mansilla, Kupfernagel, Havik and Young in the same “line”
Avelino was kinda forced to do an early sprint, as issues with Aker train made that Hagen was gaining some ground to the rest of the bunch. Mansilla quickly follows the Portuguese sprinter. But there’s still over 1,5 kms to go!
Under the Flamme Rouge, it looks like Avelino is starting to fade, though the couple of corners in that zone might be hiding everyone else true speed, but Vesely is coming really fast in the inside line, kinda blocking Young, while Van Poppel is taking the outside line, hoping to get out of the final corner with more speed. Havik, Weber and Stauff aren’t really fighting for the first places, while there’s a risk a split might happen behind them
Vesely has taken the lead, and with 500 metres, it doesn’t look like he’ll be losing the win today. Van Poppel is about to take second place from Avelino and Mansilla
Daniel Vesely wins in Schaffhausen the opening stage of 2018 Tour de Suisse, so he becomes also the first race leader!
Mansilla gets second place, with Avelino in third, after Van Poppel cracked in the final metres, losing a podium place. Young has to settle for fifth
Stauff finishes sixth, ahead of Kemboi, Hagen, Havik and Weber
Vesely, who is going now to the podium to receive the jersey of leader, already won two stages in 2017 edition, so clearly a great race this one for the Czech sprinter, that changed teams in this off-season, but didn’t change his habit of winning stages in Suisse
