Welcome to Central England for the ninth edition of the East Midlands Cicle Classic, the seventh time the race is part of the ProTour calendar. Historically the race is Sam Bewley territory, who won the race four times in a row from 2012 to 2016. Greg Van Avermaet denied the New Zealander a fifth victory by finishing solo and not waiting for a sprint. Will Bewley strike back, can Van Avermaet defend his title or will we see a new name on the palmarès? Anything is possible in a cobbled classic.
Profile
The race is 203.3 kilometers long, which makes it slightly shorter than the big classics. Start in Empingham and finish in Oakham, both in the county of Rutland, East Midlands. The main points of interest are the cobblestone sections, 27 in total. The last section is at roughly 15 kilometer. There is a bit of undulation but that shouldn't have that big an impact.

The bookmakers declare Bewley as favorite. No surprise given his track records and skills. He won Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Strade Appia Antica, E3 Prijs, Paris - Roubaix and Malopolski Wyscig this year, only missing out on Ronde van Vlaanderen. Nobody wants to ride to the finish with Bewley because they will be outsprinted.
Who won Ronde van Vlaanderen then? Van Avermaet! He may be getting older but he hasn't lost his touch yet. Maybe we can see another epic ride like the one that brought him the victory last year, the start of a new era of domination in this race.
Summerhill and Senechal are good riders but usually fall short of the victory due to the previous riders being stronger. Both want to finally settle themselves amongst the great cobblestone riders.
Stallaert has had a stellar season so far, finishing runner-up in both Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris - Roubaix. Can he repeat his performance here or even improve upon it by winning?
Carlsberg is one of two wildcard teams, the other being Xero. Vanspeybrouck would love to cause an upset to beat the riders in the highest category. He has an excellent lieutenant in Nolf.
The list of riders with chances of a podium, top five or top ten extends much further than the aformentioned names. Kamyshev, Trentin, Altur, Teunissen, Sibilla, Daniel, Wisniowski, Spengler. A lot of names but very few places at the top.
If the cobblestones are not tough enough to create big gaps, we might see a bigger group reaching the finish line for a sprint. In that case Bewley is still favourite, but Kristoff is a name to hold into consideration. Possibly the only one in the field to match Bewley in a sprint.
He might not be on the favorites sheet, but I'll just mention him to prevent myself from looking like a complete fool when he wins by 20 minutes:  Bakari. Do I need to say more?

Shame I couldn't bring former winner Luke Rowe back here for our third PT wildcard of the year, but he made use of his alternative race in the Baltics! Hope for a breakaway and a nice showing by Debesay (maybe even together)! Oh, and a Polanc win.

Its a disgrace that someone who didnt even win this race last season gets to wear the No. 1 jersey. I think that deserves the revenge of having the winner from last season repeat his success

Congratulation to Wisniowski who wins the actual race behind the ever winning Bewley and eternal second Greggy. Once again I can be very happy about a second place - absolutely no reason to be dissatisfied here. The start of the dash back into the top 5 has began.

Haha Debesay literally last in that 34 man selection  Not a good showing for us, lucky it doesn’t cost us points! Typical result, shame GVA couldn’t get one final win over Bewley before he declined again below top PT level.

10th doesn’t do much for us. Too bad he was dead at the end, he could normally have finished 5-7th here.

Decent from Trentin eventhough he seemed to be on the back foot for much of the race. 5th place in the end is solid
On the other hand it was nice to see our team race aggressive with Gjølberg in the breakaway, and both Lhotellerie and Walsleben being in the group after the first selection. |

Great to have some MG action again. Wisniowski with a great 3rd place, more or less how good it could be in a race like this. He rode smart, using Ringheim for the early attacks and doing work in the group instead of burning all his power in the attacks. I like that guy
Congrats to Bewley, Moser and Roman. Looked unstoppable in the sprint. Thanks to Marco for an exciting report.

Solid race for VSB to have. It was definitely Nolf's best race of the year. but in the end, nothing really notable for us, and that's fine with no points at stake.
