Stage 1: Barzan Towers – Doha golf club 142.5 km

Welcome to the first stage, we start at the Barzan Towers in the town of Umm Salal Mohammed. The route travels north for two sprints before heading back south for a finish at Doha golf club in the northern part of Doha city.

We got high wind speeds at the start line at 30 km/hour expected to be even harder in the afternoon. Unexpected in this part of the world it is a bit cloudy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/0.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Dumoulin open up the race accelerating right from the start, over the next 30 km we get a fierce fight between the peloton and riders trying to form breakaway. These riders was in one or more failed attempts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Balloni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Karatzios,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lampaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Potts,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Roman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann

Many teams have taken part in the chase but can mention that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Turek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Neilands have been burning lots of calories.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/1.jpg

Now we have just 6 km to the first sprint everyone together again, now will a race favourite take the points and bonus seconds?
Doesn’t look like that, a new group of attackers have got 23” with 5 km to the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann, but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart has a puncture and is immediately back in the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/2.jpg

The peloton accept the fact that they can’t hold things together, even letting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Richardson glide away.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann takes the bonus sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/3.jpg

The break builds a lead of 4’25, but from 70 km left it starts to decrease, when the group gets to the 2nd sprint with 56 km left, it is reduced to 3’26”. Again it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Schachmann in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod.

40 km left, distance 2’37”, in the peloton it is now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Neilands and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden together setting a very high pace, a dangerous development with wind speeds now 49 km/hour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/4.jpg

The side wind acceleration pays off, soon the bunch is cut in half with 94 riders sitting behind the peloton. Amongst those in trouble are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Bertilsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Havik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Vesely

30 km to go, distance to breakaway 2’00”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5.jpg

7 km to the line, the above mentioned riders never got back.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Paillot was the first breakaway riders to get caught falling straight through the peloton. The others still have 24”.

The high pace keeps the peloton stretched with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre amongst those sitting dangerously low.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/6.jpg

4.7 km left
We see the first sprint trains form as the breakaway is basically caught. It is Evonik – ELKO with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Nooytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, at Stayen wheel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu sitting tight.

Also Iberia - Team Degenkolb seem to be forming a train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/7.jpg

3.5 km left.
This is the situation at the front.

Notably a train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Croket, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley is formed in the rear end of the peloton, but quite some distance to the front at this late point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/8.jpg

2.5 km left.
Some 500 meters ago suddenly Evonik’s train fell apart leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen alone trying to find a new wheel to grab.

We now got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand who have really gained some ground over the last km. behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb

Behind him in the middle we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden side by side.

At the left side the previously mentioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley train is coming fast, at their wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre traveling a 1st class ticket to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard at wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump all in a large tight group behind Van der Sanden and Van Stayen, behind them a 6-8 meter gap to the next riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/9.jpg

2 km left, things are spreading out a bit more now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand alone in front, surely pushes it to the limit, but can he keep this up? At present he got a nice gab.

Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado close at his rear right.

At Degenkolb’s left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley glued and behind Bewley’s left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift.

A few meters further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Croket and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino side by side.

Then further 6-7 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard

Behind them we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel at the left side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic at the right.

Also what we can call in this 2nd group we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans more or less in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/10.jpg

1.5 km left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand still in front, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb is getting closer.

About 2 meters behind Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and at Swift’s left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen.

About 3 meters behind Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard seems to be closing in, behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff, at the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard.

We also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump in Kristoff’s slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Croket, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic also in what we can call the first group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/11.jpg

Under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand who looks a bit cooked now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley although looking fine is not getting any closer, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard has gained ground now 4th and at Bewley wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff at Coquard’s left, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel between them just lacking a cycle length, at the right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard on par with Zabel.

Left of Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift all looking rather used, while on Zabel’s right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump seems to keep up the pace. Behind Kump also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger seems to have exploded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/12.jpg

600 meters left.

Degenkolb looking very strong adding to his lead, about 8 meter down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, who have now both passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand

Right behind Ahlstrand pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel first and to his left rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh side by side, they got about 4 meters to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard and another 3-4 meters to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump.

Then a few meters to a group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, coming incredibly fast out of nowhere!!, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger also in this group, and with a sudden boost of pace pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic closing in on these riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/13.jpg

300 meters left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Degenkolb seems to have sealed this keeping his distance.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard now has the edge over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley.

In 4th position we now has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh very nice steady pace he has kept over the last few km, about a cycle length behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand struggling now at 6th position with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff closing in at his left.

4-5 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard another few meters to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump, closing in on him like a hurricane the unbelievable pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar (his manager must be proud), already overtaken pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift.

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic very fast closing in on Swift, may well end up doing better than the team leader today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb wins at Doha golf club, this will be is 4th stage win in Tour of Qatar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard in a photo finish for 2nd

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh 4th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel 5th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev comes out of nowhere to grab 9th he was not even under the red kite when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb was at 600 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump for 10th.
