Criterium du Dauphine Libere - Stage 4
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/01.jpg

Many riders woke up today with fear in their legs. Not only do they have to tackle 246.5 kilometers, most of them are uphill. Legendary cols have to be crossed today: Madeleine, Croix-de-Fer, Télégraphe and finish at 2645 meters atop the Col du Galibier. Surely this stage will bring fireworks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/02.jpg

With 3 hors category climbs, obviously it's KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca who is first to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/03.jpg

He started what would be a morning breakaway of fifteen riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca (KoM leader, 70 pts)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Mamykin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Afonso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Portela
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Roosen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Frank
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Tanfield
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Buchmann
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Power
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Smirnovs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Tarvis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Agudelo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Thurau

Puma doesn't seem to be happy with this breakaway and put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv in charge of chasing them down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/04.jpg

At the early third category climb, the break was shattered in many pieces. Surprisingly, Mosca took no points. Instead, Buchmann takes the six points to start his quest for the KoM jersey. Puma keeps the gap at a constant 1'30 and is set to take back some riders who couldn't follow the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/05.jpg

In the end, we are left with a breakaway of nine. Korsaeth, Afonso, Tanfield, Smirnovs, Landa and Agudelo missed the cut. Puma seems satisfied with this group and stops its wild goose chase, and the gap increases to three minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/06.jpg

Nine turns into eight temporarily as Mosca punctures! A horrible scenario for the Italian but he manages to find his way back before the Col du Madeleine. Meanwhile the Puma manager changed his mind and puts Sagiv back at the front to reduce the gap back to 1'30. Then he is called back again and the gap goes back to three minutes. Then Sagiv goes back to the front to bring it back to the same number again before relinquishing control of the peloton back to RBC. Weird tactics from the Germans.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/07.jpg

All this back and forth did mean that on the Madeleine most riders from the breakaway who couldn't follow the pace there dropped back immediately into the peloton. In fact, only three riders managed to reach the top in front of the peloton: Buchmann, Frank and Portela. Buchmann wins the mountain sprint ahead of Frank and takes another twenty points, while Portela is at 1'30 from the duo. The peloton at 2'30, while riders such as Paillot (2nd GC) and Krasnoperov have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/08.jpg

Portela didn't survive the early sloped of the Col de la Croix-de-Fer, and the lightning pace of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png van Zyl gives Buchmann and Frank only a thirty second lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Novikov uses this situation to attack, and is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Vysna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Kozhatayev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/09.jpg

It is Bartl who wins the mountain sprint with a small lead over Novikov and Vysna. Then it's a struggling Buchmann and Frank, with Kozhatayev not far behind. The peloton crossed the top at three minutes from Bartl. RBC still has the initiative with Gazelle as occasional helpers. The group contains 46 riders, with no major name dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/10.jpg

Novikov and Vysna join up with Bartl just after the intermediate sprint. With 45 kilometers, the Col du Télégraphe and Col du Galibier to go, the peloton is at 4'30 with the chasing trio at 1'30 from E1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/11.jpg

No action at the front on the Télégraphe, Bartl takes 16 points for the mountains classification ahead of Vysna and Novikov. Mosca will still hold the KoM jersey regardless of the finishing order at the Galibier, but will be disappointed he did not pick up any points today. Kozhatayev, Buchmann and Frank at 1'24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/12.jpg

There is action in the peloton though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Tenorio is the first of the big names to attack. He gets company in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Kritskiy, whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Nerz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Reis try to follow them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/13.jpg

The quartet was brought back though, and the catching of group Kozhatayev is imminent as well. The leading trio is 2'14 in arrears and commencing on the tough part of the Galibier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/14.jpg

Reis gives it another go and is immediately followed by Tenorio. Meanwhile at the front, Novikov couldn't follow the pace and is forty seconds behind Bartl and Vysna, but their lead is now under two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/15.jpg

The leaders are caught by Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin and Tenorio. Then comes a group with Novikov, Reis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Schelling at 30 seconds. The remaining of the peloton are at '52, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Marquez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/16.jpg

7 kilometers left, the former leaders couldn't follow the new pace and dropped back down the field. Madrazo launches an attack, to which Sicard and Phinney respond. This trio is closing in on the leading trio. Galta attacked from behind and joined up with Reis and Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/17.jpg

Pluchkin sees the trio closing in to forty seconds and decides to place an attack himself! He quickly establishes a small lead. An overview of the current gaps with 5 kilometers to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/19.jpg

Phinney, Sicard and Madrazo can smell Kritskiy and Tenorio, but Pluchkin is a minute ahead with two kilometers to go. The gap in the GC to Phinney is 1'11, so it will be a tight decision as it stands right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/20.jpg

1000 meters left for Pluchkin. The gap remains constant, and assuming he will win the stage Phinney has to finish within 51 seconds, unless he receives bonifications as well. That chance has increased, because he has now officially caught Tenorio and Kritskiy. The groups behind are only losing more time, as they missed the decisive attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/21.jpg

Pluchkin starts celebrating, but he still has 200 meters to go! What a rookie mistake from the Moldovan, this might cost him the GC lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/22.jpg

And this is the exact moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Aleksandr Pluchkin crosses the line to win at the Col du Galibier. Now we start the stopwatch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney for second. The American clocks in at 50 seconds, and with eight bonus seconds he holds his GC lead by nine seconds! What if Pluchkin didn't celebrate, that is the question we might be asking for the remainder of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/24.jpg

Tenorio passing Kritskiy for fourth at 1'03. Madrazo finishes sixth twenty seconds later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/25.jpg

Seventh place for Reis ahead of Galta, Marquez, Olivier, Bartl and Schelling and Vysna. All losing three to four minutes and requiring a miracle to win the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Haig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Abal with an anonymous stage in 14th and 15th, over five minutes already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Dauphine/S4/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl the biggest loser of the day, nearly six minutes down together with Nerz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Nesset.

The jury was quite lenient in applying the time limit, with the gruppetto allowed to finish 1 hour and 18 minutes behind Pluchkin. However, six riders who were even behind that group are taken out of the race:
