Stage 5: Camel Race Track - Al Khor Corniche 159.8 km

Welcome to the 5th stage, after yesterday’s breakaway win, this will be the last option for the top sprinters to get those important bonus seconds, gaining something in the GC, before the last short time trail tomorrow.

We start at Al-Shahaniya, Qatar's largest camel racing track, in the city of the same name, the largest settlement in central Qatar, with a population of about 140.000.

Finishing at Al Khor Corniche, a seafront promenade stretched over a 28,000 square meter facing the Persian Gulf, in Al Khor City about 50 km north of Doha.

Another nice sunny day, with winds expected to be from 10-20 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Betilson opens the race within the first kilometer, a group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Basso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv joins him after about 15 km, to form the breakaway of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/1.jpg

The distance grows steadily, when the breakaway passes the first sprint it is 6’34”, 114 km left.
Without fight pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Betilson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Basso.

Everyone in the breakaway are more than 10 minutes behind in GC, on paper the strongest rider in the breakaway, seems to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/2.jpg

The peloton is taking it remarkably easy considering this is the last option for the sprinters. With 80 km left the distance has grown to almost 10 minutes.

From there the peloton puts a little more pressure on, but when the breakaway passes the last intermediate sprint, they still got 7 minutes with just 30 km to go.

Without fight pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin takes the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland.

In the peloton it is only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Gallego Martin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/3.jpg

From 20 km onward, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Blythe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Turek starts working in the peloton pushing it to 55 km/hour, but hard to believe that it could change the fact that the breakaway has won, with a gap of more than 7 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/4.jpg

15 km left for the breakaway distance 6’15”
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin is launching a bold early attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/5.jpg

4 km left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin, he has 51” to the pursuit, 5’50 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/6.jpg

2.2 km left for Gallopin, he got 1’02” to the pursuit.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Betilson attacks from the 2nd group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin takes a solo wins at Al Khor Corniche, able to celebrate without looking back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Basso wins the sprint for the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv 5th.

About 2 km left for the peloton, we got 4 separate trains up.

500 meters left for the sprinters.
It is close, 10-11 riders with just 2 meters between them.

Leading four riders in first row are from left to right:
Lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado who will probably not have much more left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh.

2nd row is from left to right:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu, leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen who has somehow lost his leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino

3rd row is from left to right:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Ringheim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen

On line behind Kristoff, leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley not his best day it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/12.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu rounds of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/5/13.jpg

No change in the GC podium John Degenkolb in front of Sam Bewley and Peter Kennaugh, the latter two riders in the exact same time, making their respective time trail result decisive.

John Degenkolb increased his point lead over Sam Bewley to 14 points, sealed with this result.

Aegon – Lavazza took over the team lead from Desigual, with only the short time trail left that should be sealed

Rick Zabel lead the youth, but with Dylan Groenewegen, Erik Baska and Jan Brockhoff all at just +10”, this will be thrilling tomorrow.
