Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 3
Tamijo
Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 3: Sessa Aurunca - Venafro 164.3 km

The stage start in Sessa Aurunca from there straight south for a sprint at the coast in Castel Volturno, moving west around the Trebulani Mountains before heading north for a finish in Venafro.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/0.jpg

Although the route travels in the region of Trebulani Mountains and the Campanian Apennines we mainly follow the river valleys with just a small climb near Maddaloni, making it one of the few stages for the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/1.jpg

A sunny day, but winds just below 40 km/hour could make this stage harder than expected.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel opens the stage with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Mosca at wheel. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Gretsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan attacks, but that was all shut down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel gives it another go and this time succeed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/2.jpg

The group get to the intermediate sprint with 7’05”, not fighting for it, the points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan.

The breakaway get a gap of 7’31” before the peloton reacts, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjølberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Franczak start working together to reduce the gap, getting to the KoM about mid-stage it is down to 5’02”

Clearly the better puncher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan wins the KoM, but in this case won’t get him close to a KoM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/3.jpg

Over the next section the responsibility in the peloton is in the hands of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png T-Mobile and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Evonik – ELKO working with 3 riders each.

38 km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ariesen wins the points sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel without fight.

Soon after we get a huge split in the peloton, due to a hard cross-wind acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Evonik – ELKO, winds blowing at 47 km/hour at this point.

Top 15 GC riders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov cut from the 35 riders in the 2nd group.

They all come back relative fast but positioning is crucial in this hard cross-wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/4.jpg

The trio in front passes the 20 km banner with 1’18”, at 12 km it is 55”, Evonik decided to let go of the front, now it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Oss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjølberg pulling with 60 km/h, but the wind now also coming mainly at their rear.

The camera has spotted pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan sitting in a group more than a minute behind the other favorites, very serious this late on the stage. Three Moser – Sygic riders with him, but will be very hard to close this now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/5.jpg

7 km left, breakaway at 55”
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan now more than 2 minutes behind the other favorites, also GC 19th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kangert have lost almost a minute.

Youth 2nd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Raileanu 3rd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Gebrezgabihier and 4th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel also in trouble now, giving Youth 5th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Cataford an opportunity to advance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/6.jpg

Under the 5 km banner the breakaway have regained some time, now 1’20” ahead of the pursuit, it is beginning to look possible.

But it was not to be, the breakaway ran out of energy, and a group of 9 riders have accelerated away from the 2nd group, getting ready for the final sprint with 1.4 km left.

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Hansen in front leading for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Reimer leading for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla leading for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic has swung off now near the middle of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis a few meter behind the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/7.jpg

First under the red kite it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen.
Then side by side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis and behind them also side by side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek with some gap to the next rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/8.jpg

400 meter left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki have been very fast now in front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen just passing lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla 2nd about 1 meter behind, looks like it is between those two. With 3-4 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme another 3-4 meters further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki wins in Venafro in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla takes the last podium leaving Evonik – ELKO with a fine result despite losing the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme 6th
