Interesting stage what we have today, finishing in Lac-de-Vassiviere. A hilly-rated stage that ends in a 5-km climb, but it might not be hard enough to make splits, and a rider like Van der Lijke or Houle could survive this climb to sprint for the win. Or a rider lIke Gesink could try to use it to put some time to Taaramae before the mountains. Anyway, a very open stage, with a lot of possibles winners
Five riders attack from the start of the day, and after some kms of fight with the bunch, finally they are allowed to form the BotD
Lagab
Vorobev
Jaramillo
Dlamini
Chtioui
Calmejane, as KoM leader, wanted to be in that breakaway, and in his attempt of joining them, it almost made that the 5 riders in front were caught by the bunch. But Bennelong and T-Mobile finally stopped chasing and allowed the French to join the breakaway with still 150 kms to go
But Calmejane’s move proves to be worthless, as with the help of Berg, Reddit and T-Mobile, the breakaway is caught 30 kms away from the finish, and still a few kms ahead of a Cat.3 climb that Calmejane was looking forward to
Anyway, he attacked again to get the points in this climb and secure himself another day in the Polka Dot Jersey
Cat.3 KoM
Calmejane 6 Gebremedhin 4 Reguigui 2
There’s an intermediate sprint less than 10 kms from the finish line, where Groenewegen and Van der Lijke sprint to get some points for the Green jersey, and also bonus seconds. Maybe not the smartest choice by Van der Lijke given he’s a stage contender, and wasting energies now might make him not contest for the win later
Intermediate Sprint
Groenewegen 6 Van der Lijke 4 Houle 2
Less than 6 kms left and no one has tried to attack, so Berg continues to control things for their leader Gesink. Taaramäe is very well placed between the first 5 riders, with Gesink and Tenorio on his wheel, while Van der Lijke now is nowhere to be seen
Taaramae uses the hardest slopes to acelerate a bit the pace, but it doesn’t look like a proper attack, like just waiting for other to attack and then follow them
And there was a proper attack, but by Daniel Martin, who brings with him Taaramae, Chiarello, Gesink and Tenorio, creating a gap to some riders like Guldhammer, Hirt or Schleck who are trying to join this group. And with only 4 kms to go, the hardest part is gone, and now is like “false flat” until the finish line
Taaramae and Martin keep pushing with a bit more than 2 kms to go, with minor gaps to a group with Gesink, Tenorio, Chiarello, Hirt and Guldhammer, though they aren’t official gaps yet between any group
The first riders are almost now under the Flamme Rouge, and it looks like we’ll see a 6-rider sprint for the win today. A very important win, because it’s almost certain that whoever wins, will inherit the GC lead.
Taaramae, Martin, Gesink, Tenorio, Guldhammer and Hirt are the six riders fighting for the stage win. Guldhammer is the best sprinter, but he might be starting too behind the sprint to get the win. And Martin seems to be struggling
400 metres to go for Taaramae, who has a decent gap to Martin, who isn’t sprinting anymore, and Guldhammer, who is making a good comeback. Neither Gesink, Tenorio or Hirt look to have the speed to challenge for the win
And it’s a win for Rein Taaramae, who starts his reign over this race! He isn’t the fastest rider when sprinting, but he started first the sprint and never looked back
Second place for Guldhammer who might be a little disappointed to lose the sprint due to bad positioning. Third is Gesink, who can’t be unhappy as he’s set to distance some of the rivals or a GC podium. Martin, Tenorio and Hirt will get the same time as Taaramae
Schleck and Wellens are 7th and 8th, but will lose around 20 seconds to Taaramae’s group
Amador leads home a rather big group that will end up losing around 40 seconds to Taaramae. In that group there are riders like Van der Lijke, Reis, Lutsenko, Machado, Houle, Howard, Goos, Chiarello, Berhane, Quintana, Morton, Olivier or Ji. Later we got notices that basically all the bunch, including former race leader Dylan Groenewegen was given the same time as Amador
As expected with the stage win, Rein Taaramae becomes the new leader, with a 7-second gap to Robert Gesink and 16 to Rasmus Guldhammer. Groenewegen still leads both Points and U25 classifications, while Calmejane continues leading KoM
