After yesterday's monster stage it's time for another up and down stage. Luckily the climb of the Côte de Domancy is not as difficult as yesterday's climbs, except the riders have to climb it five times. Finish is downhill in Sallanches. Will the GC riders take a bit of a rest day and allow the breakaway to step on the podium?
A breakaway of six riders, with some riders with KoM intentions:
Mosca (KoM leader, 70 pts)
Ludvigsson (4th KoM, 31pts)
Lampaert
Barbio
Hamilton
Fritsch
Lampaert takes the points at the intermediate sprint. The gap to the peloton is 3'40 with 128 kilometer to go.
On the second category climb prior to the local laps, Mosca takes the maximum points ahead of Ludvigsson. RBC, Gazelle and Popo4Ever keep the gap constant between three and four minutes. Maybe the GC riders want to battle it out for the stage?
Buchmann, second in the KoM with 42 points, attacks at 92 kilometers to go, right when we reach the local laps. SPAR has joined the chase, gap at around three minutes still.
Buchmann joins the break on the next climb but cannot prevent Mosca from taking the first of three categorized ascents of the Côte de Domancy. Hamilton and Lampaert struggled on the climb and lost contact with the group.
No action on the second ascent, this time uncategorized, but the race kicks off on the downhill. Bonnin leads for RBC with Phinney on his wheel. A small acceleration at the top and suddenly they find themselves with a gap! The other riders are in chaos, Pluchkin, Sicard, Burke and van Zyl at 20 seconds, the latter two obviously not pulling. Peloton is already a minute down.
Pluchkin and Sicard join the leading duo in the street of Sallanches, Burke and Van Zyl dropped back. Will the quartet continue riding or will they drop back and call this attack accidental? Gazelle leads the peloton at 1'08, where there are only 46 riders left. Most notable riders dropped are Nesset (17th), Faiers (19th), Chiarello (23rd) and Goos (24th), and possible stage contenders Boswell and Van der Lijke.
They decided it was not worth it and dropped back to the peloton. This 'situation' caused the gap with the breakaway to reduce to around a minute with 40 kilometers to go. The second peloton including aforementioned names is already two minutes behind.
Buchmann wins a mountain sprint, but with Mosca in second place he only gains two points. The peloton has slowed down, allowing the gap to go back up to three minutes with 30 kilometers to go. This also means the dropped riders managed to return.
Marquez in trouble on the downhill! This time no attack at the front of the peloton, but the Spaniard was positioned at the back and a few careful turns made him lose contact. Docker is around him to try and bring him back.
The fourth ascent, the last time as category three climb, and again Buchmann wins it. This time he manages to drop the remaining breakaway and goes solo. Small gains though for the German, as Mosca passed the sprint in second place and doesn't need to worry yet. Puma and RBC control the pace in the peloton, where Marquez and Brändle (20th GC) are one minute behind.
And now the final time the riders have to climb up the Côte de Domancy, uncategorized. Buchmann leads by 1'18 over Mosca and Fritsch, 2'16 over Ludvigsson and Barbio, 3'55 over the peloton and 5'35 over group Marquez. With nine kilometer to go the stage win looks the be certain for the German.
Madrazo attacks! Denifl and Haig follow him, the rest remains seated for now.
The chasing group did split into multiple fractions without any real attacking: Bonnin pulls Phinney, Kritskiy, Tenorio and Arndt to a small lead. Pluchkin attacks his way to this group from behind. Buchmann crossed the top for the final time and goes into the downhill set for victory, although Madrazo is rapidly closing, already with Mosca and Fritsch at 1'28. Denifl and Haig a further 30 seconds behind.
Phinney attacks on the downhill! So that is what that weird moment halfway through the stage was. He has already caught up to Haig who descended slower than Denifl. The gap to Madrazo is just under a minute, with Denifl right between them. Ludvigsson and Barbio were caught as well and hope to remain in group Pluchkin. Sicard tries fanatically to make it to that group, taking a lot of risk on the steep downhill.
It is Emanuel Buchmann though who wins the stage in Sallanches. While his goal to threaten Mosca in the mountains classification wasn't a success, I'm sure he will be over the moon with this victory.
Second place for Madrazo at 41 seconds, who managed to dispatch of the former breakaway in the final part of the downhill.
Denifl just caught and passed Fritsch before the line to take third place and the final bonus seconds.
Mosca finishes fifth and feels ever more comfortable in that mountain jersey.
Phinney's downhill attempt was well executed but he did not gain anything. The other cooperated well enough to reach the finish with him. Phinney sixth, Pluchkin seventh, Haig eight, Arndt ninth, Tenorio tenth, Kritskiy eleventh, Barbio twelfth, Ludvigsson thirteenth. All at 1'53 from Buchmann, hence losing 1'12 to Madrazo. This means the Spaniard moves up to fourth in the GC, still lead by Phinney.
Sicard's maniac downhill pays off, as he is given the same time as group Phinney in fourteenth place.
Reis and Galta lead the group of riders who missed the boat, losing a minute to Phinney and co. Schelling and Olivier also in this group.
And here a large group of losers. Nerz at four minutes. Marquez, Brändle, Nesset, Abal and Bartl at five minutes. Faiers at eight minutes. Those riders make a huge drop in the GC.
