A short prologue of 5 kms in the streets of Praga is the first stage of this TT focused stage race. As always, Phinney is the favourite for the win, but with such a short route, a lot of riders could surprise the reigning winner of this race
The riders will face heavy winds in today’s stage, and if there are changes in the wind speed, we could have surprises, given that it’s tail wind in all the course. We were told by RBC DS that Phinney did a time of 6’08 this morning when there was no wind, so we’ll see how the wind affects times today
´
And Viennet’s time is already faster than 6’08, as the Frenchman has done a 6’05
There has been a 10 km/h increase in the wind speed when Van Baarle was on course, and he went on beating Viennet’s time by 2 seconds. Clearly the more wind the faster the riders will go
We have a new leader with Prado, as the Mexican goes one second faster than Van Baarle
Vangstad does a time of 6 minutes, taking the first place. The wind is clearly helping these riders
Tennant does the same time as Vangstad, but it’s given the provisional lead thanks to tenths
5’58 for Verona who is the new leader!
Great time for Van Winden, who is 6 seconds faster than Verona
Oram goes third fastest, 8 seconds worse than Van Winden
Second place for Ligthart, 5 seconds behind the best time
Postlberger goes fourth fastest, 8 seconds behind Van Winden
Disappointing time for Yatsevich, who can only be fourth so far
Boom! Yannick Stoltz with a massive performance takes the hot seat, beating Van Winden by 6 seconds and putting a time of 5’46!
Third place for Vlatos, whose time is the same as Van Winden, so 6 seconds worse than Stoltz. The wind has been stable for a while, around 50 km/h
Stannard is 7 seconds slower than Stoltz, so that’s fourth place for the British rider
Only sixth best time for Paris-Nice stage winner Leung, 11 seconds behind Stoltz. The wind has slowed down a bit, probably not enough to influence the times
Paillot goes second fastest! Just 4 seconds behind Stoltz!
Hepburn is within 10 seconds of the best time, setting the 6th best time
Gonzalez Salas beats Hepburn by one second for that sixth place. And the wind is back to pre-stage conditions, when Viennet did his time
Another rider that does the same time as sixth placed rider, Haugard, with a time 8 seconds behind Stoltz
Kittel can only do a time 9 seconds slower than Stoltz. The less wind present now is making the riders that start now to do worse times clearly
Not a good day for one of the stage favourites, Dennis, as he’s not even in provisional Top20, 12 seconds behind Stoltz
The wind is back at full force, and Cataford does a Top10 time
Chtioui goes eighth fastest! Same time as Haugard and Gonzalez Salas though
And Dempster is beaten by Chtioui by miliseconds to take a Top10 place!
Aramendia goes into the top10 too, with same times as the previous 3-4 riders
Finally someone not doing the exact same time! Brändle sets the fifth best time, 7 seconds slower than Stoltz
Malori puts the second time, just 2 seconds worse than Stoltz!
And after some time without any big riders starting, Howson does a terrible time, 16 seconds worse than Stoltz! Then we notice that the wind speed has decreased a lot, which almost guarantees Stoltz’s win today
13 seconds is Sütterlin’s lose today
Only fourth best time for Fiedler, 5 seconds behind Stoltz, but his performance was great, he just lost because of the wind, which is 20 km/h slower than when Stoltz did his time
Phinney barely breaks into the Top20 of the stage, being 10 seconds worse than Stoltz
So Yannick Stoltz wins the prologue of this race and will be the first leader!
