The mythical Col d’Eze TT concludes this edition of Paris-Nice which have given us some exciting racing, and the most likely GC win for Rein Taaramae. The final podium seems to be already decided, with Taaramae, Schleck and Machado, but the rest of the Top10 is really tight and could see several changes today
The first rider to put a great time is Moschella. He’s the first rider to go under 20 minutes, with a time of 19’25. Clearly a good test for Taaramae later
Lunke beats the Italian’s time by only two seconds to take over the “Hot Seat”
Brambilla, who has been one of the underperformers of the week, destroys the clock, getting really close to go under 19 minutes, with a time of 19’08
Faglum Karlsson goes second fastest, four seconds slower than Brambilla. A great time for a rider that is potentially in the fight for the U25 jersey, being less than 2 minutes behind Vasyliv, the leader of that classification. At least he ‘s gaining the second place in U25 over Heymes, as the Luxemborgian had a terrible day, and lost more than a minute on Faglum Karlsson
Not the best timetrial in Vasyliv’s career, but it’s good enough to secure the U25 win for the German rider
Kunshin beats Brambilla’s time by 7 seconds as goes fastest!
That was close for Ji, who is only 2 seconds slower than Kunshin
Morton doesn’t disappoint today too and goes fastest by 14 seconds. Probably not a time that will be enough for a Top5 in the stage, but after this horrible week for the Aussie, anything will improve what he has done so far in the race
Olivier misses out on Morton’s time by just 3 seconds, which is enough to stop Morton from surpassing him in GC
Good time for Reis, who is third best only 4 seconds worse than Morton. He has a chance to overtake Wellens for the 11th place in GC, being 4 seconds behind the Belgian in GC
And Wellens will lose his place in GC to Reis by only one second! He was 5 seconds slower than Reis in the TT, setting the fourth best time so far
Amazing time for Daniel Martin, goes fastest by 19 seconds over Morton! He might have a chance to get 9th in GC with this great time
But Berhane doesn’t lose that much time, though in fact he saves his GC place by only 2 seconds, after losing 35 seconds to Martin in the TT
Amador can’t beat Martin’s time and will finish 8th in GC. Not what he was looking for before the race
Tenorio makes the fastest time of the day! 18’22! And remember that despite starting the day in 7th, there’s only 12 seconds to the 4th place in GC. And this time could send him straight to that spot
Guldhammer will have to settle for 7th in GC given his time was 34 seconds slower than Tenorio’s
Hirt is 32 seconds slower than Tenorio in the stage, so the Spaniard is already up to fifth in GC
And that’s it. Robert Gesink puts the hammer down and improves Tenorio’s time by 17 seconds, coming really close to enter the 17 minutes zone, securing the 4th place in GC.
Easy ride for Machado, who despite being 34 seconds slower than Gesink, won’t have any troubles to stay in the GC podium
Schleck won this very stage two years ago, but now he’s past his prime and can only be fifth in the stage, more than 20 seconds worse than Gesink’s time. Anyway, he secures his second place in GC
And of course Rein Taaramae wins the stage, his third stage win of the week, and wins both GC and Points. He can’t go under 18 minutes, but that’s the least important thing
Another GC win for Rein Taaramae, who has no rival in this world. GC win, Points jersey, 3 stages, 4 days as leader... not a bad race for the Estonian.
Second place for Andy Schleck, who in his first race past his prime was the best of the mortals. And with Taaramae not being in the Giro startlist, this Schleck still has a GT in his legs in this year’s Giro.
Third place for Machado who didn’t have a weak day like many others in the Top10.
Vasyliv wins the U25 jersey in a very weak startlist for the youngters after Heymes collapsed in the final two days.
Polanc had already won the KoM jersey before today. And T-Mobile wins too the Teams classification
