Penultimate stage in this edition of Paris-Nice and the final road stage, with tomorrow awaing the Col d’Eze TT. But today we have a hilly stage with lots of climbs that ends up in a terrain that might see a reduced sprint. Anyway, a breakaway win again is a high possibility, with a reduced sprint being GC riders or even a bigger sprint with riders like Van der Lijke or Houle in the mix
There’s a Cat.2 KoM in the first kms of the stage that is won by Kruijswijk, who made the first attack together with Bevin, who is trying to fight for the KoM standings, being 18 points behind Saggiorato before the stage.
One minute behind, Polanc, Saggiorato, Teklehaimanot, Calmejane and Kolar are coming ready to fight for the Polka Dot Jersey
Cat.2 KoM
Kruijswijk 10 Bevin 8 Polanc 6 Saggiorato 4 Teklehaimanot 2
So after French champion attacks, we have 8 riders in the front of the race, with a 3-minute gap
Saggiorato
Teklehaimanot
Polanc
Bevin
Kruijswijk
Calmejane
Kolar
Hivert
Polanc wins the next two KoM so the Slovenian regains the provisional lead in KoM classification. He has now 64 points, Saggiorato has 52, Teklehaimanot 44 and Bevin 42
Cat. 3 KoM
Polanc 6 Bevin 4 Teklehaimanot 2
Cat.3 KoM
Polanc 6 Calmejane 4 Teklehaimanot 2
Polanc beats Saggiorato by a few milimeters in Col du Joncin, which puts him 14 points ahead of the Swiss rider with 22 points in offer. Every other rider is out of the fight for the win in KoM
Cat.2 KoM
Polanc 10 Saggiorato 8 Bevin 6 Teklehaimanot 4 Hivert 2
RBC and Reddit are working in the bunch to reduce the gap to the breakaway before the three final climbs and have the chance to catch them, to either win a reduced sprint with Houle or attack with Lutsenko. With 60 kms to go, the gap is 3 minutes, but as always, the breakaway fighting for KoM points makes the difference to rise
Polanc overtakes Teklehaimanot in the final 20 metres of the KoM sprint in a Cat.3 climb in order to secure the win in KoM. This time Calmejane won the sprint, but the Frenchman is now only fighting for minor places in this classification
Cat.3 KoM
Calmejane 6 Bevin 4 Polanc 2
Polanc doesn’t care that he has already mathematically won the KoM jersey, as he’s still fighting for every point. He wins yet another KoM today, in the final Cat.2 climb of the day. The gap with the bunch remains at around 3 minutes with 40 kms to go, as the pace in the bunch is rather high
Cat.2 KoM
Polanc 10 Teklehaimanot 8 Saggiorato 6 Calmejane 4 Kolar 2
The chase is on in the peloton! Berg, Reddit and RBC are still trying to reduce the difference, so in the last 25 km that are flat, they aren’t forced to reduce a really big gap to a 8-rider group
Teklehaimanot attacks right after the summit of the last climb, and only Kruijswijk seems to be able to follow him, though a few metres behind. The African rider has over 30 kms to the finish line, so this is a brave move, with the bunch being 2’40 behind
The breakaway has gotten together again, and they seems to be working nicely. The bunch is 2’20 behind with 25 kms to go. Will they make it?
The bunch seems to have given up with 20 kms to the finish, and in that moment, Polanc attacks in the breakaway
Wow! Attack by Robert Gesink in the flat! He’s trying to make up time to Machado to fight for the third place in the GC podium
Lutsenko joins the move, and it’s the very own Taaramäe the one chasing down Gesink. A sign of weakness of his team, that is much weaker in the hills that in the mountains
Only 10 kms for Polanc, who is still managing to keep a gap of around 20 seconds to the rest of the breakaway. The bunch is 3 minutes behind and won’t be a problem for the stage win, that will be for a breakaway rider for the second consecutive day
Kruijswijk is so powerful in the flat that he brought Polanc back with only a relay, but the Slovenian isn’t done yet and he attacked again with 8 kms to go. He has clearly decided that he doesn’t want to win in a sprint, he wants to do it solo
Saggiorato makes a move to get his second stage win in two days, catching Polanc who might not have enough energy left to contribute on his chase anymore. The Swiss has 4 kms left and has literally dropped Calmejane out of his wheel in flat roads, so he’s really strong.
Meanwhile, Gesink has attacked again and holds a 15-second gap to Taaramae’s group
Almost under the Flamme Rouge, it looks like it will be decided in a 8-rider sprint. And Calmejane is the fastest by far in this group
And the Frenchman is clearly showing that, as he’s going first with 600 metres to go, though Kruijswijk is still close to him. The win is between them two, everyone else is sprinting way slower than them, including Saggiorato and Polanc who might finish behind the rest of the group
Kruijswijk is gaining more speed than Calmejane and makes ground on him, but with only 200 metres left, it looks like Calmejane has it
And it’s a win for Lilian Calmejane! Not enough road for Kruijswijk to make the comeback on the French rider, who give his country their first win of the race
Bevin takes third place in the line from Teklehaimanot, Saggiorato after yesterday’s win can only be fifth today, and then Hivert, Kolar and Polanc, who tried to attack a lot but he wasn’t succesfull. At least he’s winning the KoM jersey to make up for this “bad” result
Impressive effort by Gesink, who will depend on the jury to see if he has gained a few seconds on the favourite’s group. Zabel ends up winning the group sprint for the 10th place in the stage
Great win for Calmejane, who had been all-week with a hit and miss performance when it came to fight for the KoM jersey
At the end Gesink didn’t get any gap, the only thing he gained was that he is now second in the Points classification. Also, Teklehaimanot, Polanc, Kruijswijk and Saggiorato are now all over the Top20 of GC
The bigger news are that the U25 leader, Heymes, lost a lot of time in the final kms after being dropped in the flat and the new U25 leader is Vasyliv, with a gap of almost a minute over Heymes.
