Tour of Qatar
Stage 3: Dukhan – Al Gharafa Stadium 145.8 km
Welcome to the 3nd stage, we start in Dukhan the largest settlement on Qatar’s west coast facing the Gulf of Bahrain. Dukhan was the first substantial oil reserve in Qatar found in 1937. Today it is has a population of about 14.000 people.
The stage finish at Al Gharrafa Stadium in Al Rayyan a city located at the west side of Doha, today melted together with the capital to become part of Doha metropolitan area. The stadium houses Al-Gharafa SC football team.
The clouds has disappeared, we are having a sunny clear sky today, but the winds a up to 45 km/hour at the start and could provide for some cross wind action.
The first attempt to breakaway was Ariesen and Gjølberg but never got more than 30”, also a new attempt by 6 man group of Daniel, Stocker, Gjølberg, Ringheim, Sinclair and Ariesen failed.
The breakaway of the day was initiated by Lindeman and Ringheim, a little later joined by Daniel and Venturini.
Only Ringheim accelerated to win the sprint in Umm Al Qahab village, Daniel 2nd and Venturini 3rd.
With 79 km left the distance is 5’04”
The peloton has turned into the crosswind and we see some action from Van der Sanden, Eislers, Tronet, Mansilla and Latour.
The peloton immediately stretched, we see chunks of riders lose contact, amongst those in trouble are Bertilsson, Grosu (GC15), Aberasturi, Havik and Scully
Venturini wins the sprint in Al Otouriya. In front of Ringheim and Daniel
41 km to go, distance 2’45”
The crosswind action continues with wind-speeds just below 50 km/hour. It is especially De Vreese, Gallego Martin, Hoffman and
Nooytens punishing anyone having a bad day.
35 km to go, distance 2’19”
Drapac, Silvestre, Chen, Maksimov in trouble.
22 km to go, distance 1’23” Porsev (GC14) in trouble.
15 km to go, distance 1’07”
Avelino (GC6) Boeckmans, Van Poppel, Kump, Enger, youth leader Zabel (GC8) and Groenewegen in trouble.
13 km left, distance 1’01”
The above mentioned group gets back including Maksimov, but it is not over yet and some of the top sprinters had to take part in the chase burning some crucial energy.
7 km left, distance 35”
The peloton is reduced to just 35 riders.
Van Poppel and Enger loses it again and also Vesely gone.
4 km left for the breakaway, distance 38”
Now 32 riders left in the peloton, this is the complete positioning.
. . . Latour. . . . . . Eislers. . . . . . Brockhoff. . . . . Fiedler Dzamastagic Mansilla. . . . Swift. . . . . . Malori Ahlstrand Degenkolb. . . . . Howard. Merino Criado. . Dempster Veyhe Van Stayen Coquard. . . . Howson Kristoff Groenewegen Van Winden. . . . . . Kneisky. Maksimov. Avelino Kennaugh. Van der Sanden Baska. Zabel. . . . . . Bewley. . Boeckmans Nooytens. . Kump Ciolek. . .
2 km left, distance still 28” as the favourites is about to start their sprint, this may turn out to be close between the break and the sprinters.
It is Merino Criado leading for Degenkolb in front of the pursuit, behind Degenkolb side by side Coquard and Ahlstrand, between them Van Stayen close.
Behind Van Stayen on a line from left to right, Eislers, Swift, Bewley and Dzamastagic
About 2 meter behind Bewley, Kristoff.
Behind those 10 riders there is already opened a huge gap to the group of 22 riders, that includes race leader Kennaugh and youth leader Zabel, timed to 32”.
1.5 km left, the breakaway not caught yet, but just 30-50 meters ahead. They may make a fine stage result if they got anything left as everyone had a hard day.
Three riders had accelerated past the Iberia train. Slightly in front close to the right side banner, now Coquard, but Ahlstrand and Bewley no more than a cycle-length behind.
Then 5-6 meters down to Degenkolb who has passed his leadout, Kristoff, Merino Criado and Van Stayen 2-3 meters behind Degenkolb.
Another 4-6 meter to Swift, and also about 5 meters between Swift and Dzamastagic, another about 5 meters down to Eislers
The next group measured to +49” with Ciolek in front.
Coquard first under the red kite, Bewley have passed Ahlstrand all very close.
Degenkolb still 4th with from left to right Venturini, Daniel, Kristoff and Van Stayen 2-3 meters behind.
Then also Lindeman, Ringheim and Swift rather close.
Merino Criado between this group and the pursuit coming closer led by Ciolek, now measured to 24”
600 meters left
Still Coquard in the lead with Bewley close.
Ahlstrand has faded a little while Degenkolb looks strong closing in on the leaders.
Van Stayen a little faster than Kristoff, respectively in 5th and 6th position.
Breakaway riders Venturini and Daniel also keeping up the pace still in front of Swift. Lindeman and Ringheim round of the group, just a few meters behind Swift.
300 meters left, it is still Coquard in the lead and Bewley 2nd , but a very fast Degenkolb has passed Ahlstrand now very close.
In 5th Van Stayen also getting significantly closer, while Kristoff although still 6th has lost momentum falling 6-7 meters back compared to Stayen.
Behind Kristoff Venturini close, clearly best placed of the remaining riders, the others in the group side by side, 6-7 meters further back
Degenkolb wins at Al Gharafa Stadium, this was his 5th stage win in Tour of Qatar the 2nd in this edition. Coquard 2nd and Bewley takes the last podium, in front of Van Stayen 4th and Ahlstrand rounds of top 5.
Kristoff 6th , and Ringheim 7th as the best from the breakaway, Lindeman 8th and Venturini 9th losing some momentum over the last 300 meters.
Swift round of top 10 in fromt of Daniel.
Some managers having riders in top 11, may find it hard to accept that no time gap was measured between the first 37 riders, but they did get quit close in the end.
John Degenkolb take over the race lead with 5” to Sam Bewley and 13” to Bryan Coquard .
John Degenkolb also leading the point classification with 1 point to Bewley
Iberia - Team Degenkolb took over the team lead from Moser - Sygic
Rick Zabel leads the youth classification, still the only young rider to take bonus seconds.
