Tirreno-Adriatico
Stage 4: Monte San Giusto - Rapagnano 167.3 km
The stage start in Monte San Giusto, after a large lap out to the coast, the race is composed of three smaller laps on a route from Rapagnano over Monte San Giusto, Trodica, Montegranaro and Torre San Patrizio before the finish back in Rapagnano.
Besides the first flat lap, we are racing in the rural inland parts of Le Marche region, with one small hilly climb after the other, a pure puncher stage with no longer climbs to favor the more lightweight climbers.
A cloudy day looks like it is going to rain soon, winds at approx. 20 km/hour.
Senechal opens the race, at first creating a group of 4 riders with Naud, Siriwardena and point leader Kittel.
They are later joined by first Mas and just before the first KoM climb also Phelan.
Many of these riders are fine rouleurs with a good punch, strongest maybe Phelan who is also best placed in CG as 32nd at 7’57 and 7th in KoM at 5 points.
Phelan wins the KoM in front of Mas and Naud, with this Phelan is virtual KoM leader.
Distance 3’36”, 121 km to go.
T-Mobile is taking most of the responcibily in the peloton though others are also contributing a riders sometimes.
The first points sprint goes to Phelan in front of Senechal and Siriwardena
Mas attacks and win the next KoM in front of Phelan, Phelan now with a virtual KoM lead of 5 points to Barbero who is not in the breakaway.
It is raining very heavily now. Distance 5’17”, 88 km to go.
Over the next section of the race the pace in the peloton goes up, cutting down the lead, it is a combination of Hugo Boss and T-Mobile pulling with several riders. Also Grieg – Eftel and Team Puma sometimes sending a group of riders forward pulling in a period.
Meanwhile Phelan continues to harvest KoM points.
Then with 47 km left something surprising happens in the peloton, four riders have broken free, Barbero, Minguez Ayala, Ponzi and Hagen
This odd constellation has got 22”
Mas wins the point sprint, and Phelan wins another KoM sprint, now leading the virtual KoM with 33 points over Mas with 12 points.
Bovenhuis and van der Poel provide extra pressure in front of the peloton starting to close in on the 2nd group, now led by Hagen.
With 33 km left the 2nd group is reeled in, distance to the original breakaway 1’27”
16 km left, the last rider from the breakaway Senechal are reeled in by Puma – SAP who have taken the lead in the final part of the hunt.
15 km left Kelderman attacks on the climb to the final KoM, he never get a substantial gap but wins the KoM in front of De Bie
8.5 km left
Ponzi attack, behind him also Van Garderen and later Bakelants, Hagen and De Bie accelerates away from the peloton
6 km left
Another acceleration from Bakelants and he has got contact with Ponzi, they now have 14” to race leader Van Garderen with Hagen and De Bie
At 39” Boswell and Bobridge
At 54” the main bunch still 118 riders.
Under the 5 km banner
Bakelants still leading with Ponzi glued.
At 18”
Van Garderen fighting to reduce the distance and keep the race lead, pre-stage he had just 9” to Simone Ponzi. At his wheel Hagen and De Bie.
At 38” Boswell and Bobridge slowly closing in on the group in front of them.
118 riders at 54”
2 km to go
Ponzi now leading the duo in front.
At 26”
Boswell and Bobridge have caught the group in front, and Bobridge moved right up now leading the pursuit.
At 43” it seems that the peloton have finally started to agree to up the pace, getting closer and now reduced to 60 riders.
Youth 2nd Cataford and 3rd Raileanu lost contact it the split with risk of falling behind in that competition.
Ponzi still leading under the red kite and with a lead of 24”, the stage win is between him and Bakelants.
Ponzi start the sprint from pole position, Bakelants never able to pose a threat.
Ponzi wins in Rapagnano, Bakelants 2nd in the same time.
At 21” Bobridge clearly wins the sprint in the next group taking the last podium in front of Hagen 4th.
De Bie 5th and Boswell 6th in the same time as Bobridge.
Van Garderen lost contact with the riders in the 2nd group, coming in 7th at 42”
Claeys 8th, Mohoric 9th and Sagan round of top 10, all in the same time as Van Garderen

Simone Ponzi also took over the point lead from Marcel Kittel and with impressive 28 points on today’s stage Adam Phelan took a clear KoM lead.
