Stage 4: Monte San Giusto - Rapagnano 167.3 km

The stage start in Monte San Giusto, after a large lap out to the coast, the race is composed of three smaller laps on a route from Rapagnano over Monte San Giusto, Trodica, Montegranaro and Torre San Patrizio before the finish back in Rapagnano.

Besides the first flat lap, we are racing in the rural inland parts of Le Marche region, with one small hilly climb after the other, a pure puncher stage with no longer climbs to favor the more lightweight climbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/1.jpg

A cloudy day looks like it is going to rain soon, winds at approx. 20 km/hour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Senechal opens the race, at first creating a group of 4 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Naud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Siriwardena and point leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel.

They are later joined by first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas and just before the first KoM climb also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan.

Many of these riders are fine rouleurs with a good punch, strongest maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan who is also best placed in CG as 32nd at 7’57 and 7th in KoM at 5 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Naud, with this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan is virtual KoM leader.

Distance 3’36”, 121 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png T-Mobile is taking most of the responcibily in the peloton though others are also contributing a riders sometimes.

The first points sprint goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Senechal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Siriwardena

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas attacks and win the next KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan, Phelan now with a virtual KoM lead of 5 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero who is not in the breakaway.

It is raining very heavily now. Distance 5’17”, 88 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/4.jpg

Over the next section of the race the pace in the peloton goes up, cutting down the lead, it is a combination of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Hugo Boss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png T-Mobile pulling with several riders. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Grieg – Eftel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Team Puma sometimes sending a group of riders forward pulling in a period.

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan continues to harvest KoM points.

Then with 47 km left something surprising happens in the peloton, four riders have broken free, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Minguez Ayala, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen

This odd constellation has got 22”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas wins the point sprint, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Phelan wins another KoM sprint, now leading the virtual KoM with 33 points over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas with 12 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel provide extra pressure in front of the peloton starting to close in on the 2nd group, now led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen.

With 33 km left the 2nd group is reeled in, distance to the original breakaway 1’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/6.jpg

16 km left, the last rider from the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Senechal are reeled in by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Puma – SAP who have taken the lead in the final part of the hunt.

15 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman attacks on the climb to the final KoM, he never get a substantial gap but wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Tirreno/S4/7.jpg

8.5 km left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi attack, behind him also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Van Garderen and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie accelerates away from the peloton

This was 2014 race winner Simone Ponzi’s 2nd podium of this edition and his 4th stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico. With this Simone Ponzi takes the race lead with 49” to Jan Bakelants, Tejay Van Garderen fell to 3rd 53” behind the leader.

Simone Ponzi also took over the point lead from Marcel Kittel and with impressive 28 points on today’s stage Adam Phelan took a clear KoM lead.

Hugo Boss took over the team classification from Aegon – Lavazza, while Matej Mohoric further cemented his Youth lead now ahead with 8'28”, hard to see him lose that jersey.
