We stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for one more stage. The start is in the capital of Sarajevo, the finish in Bileca. The final real climb is far from the end though, so don't be surprised to see a similar scenario to the first stage with a large group sprinting at the end.
Hofstede is the first attacker of the day and at first no one seems interested in joining him. He's got two minutes when we reach the first mountain sprint of the day. Gebrezgabihier and Lavery attacked to get the remaining points, beating Kasperkiewicz, Logar and Dzhus. They all voluntarily got caught.
Eventually three riders decide to join Hofstede: Lilovski, Padun and KoM-leader Gebrezgabihier. The latter looking the solidify his lead even more.
Only two riders interested in the mountain points: Padun and Gebrezgabihier. Since Padun has to start from zero and Gebrezgabihier already has 29, the Ukrainian needs to get as many points as he can and does so on this second category climb. Lavery attacked from the peloton for the final two points, which is two minutes behind with 130 kilometer to go.
Same order on the Vjetrenik climb. Hofstede's early efforts came back to haunt him as he's dropped from the leading group on the climb. With the peloton closing in to 1'30, he would soon be caught. Lavery again taking the breadcrumbs.
Planinica marks the end for Lilovski, who couldn't match up against the two clearly stronger riders. Padun again first at the top but with Gebrezgabihier continuously in second, he doesn't really get much closer in the KoM classification.
The peloton meanwhile split in two parts. Some notable names on the wrong side: Schreurs, Van Garderen, Ginanni and some other semi-contenders. Big effort from their domestiques to bring them back at the back of the front peloton, but as a consequence they are at the back when we head onto the main climb of the day, the first category Ravna Greda.
But no action on the climb. Padun dropped Gebrezgabihier and crosses the top solo. The Eritrean has enough of an advantage to hold on to second place, and picking up more points. Gebrezgabihier at 61, Padun at 44. Vink leads the peloton over the climb with the riders who were behind back near the front positions. Still 138 riders, Preidler the highest rated rider dropped after working earlier in the stage.
We've now reached a flat zone, and that's where the attacking starts: Zingle, Bratashcuk, Vanendert and Tanovitchii. Not exactly the biggest favorites but at least they liven up the race a bit.
The quartet catches up to Padun with 40 kilometers to go. Gebrezgabihier was caught by the peloton, at 1'40 from this group. Still Grieg doing the work, with a bit of help from Evonik.
Padun has no energy left for a final category four mountain sprint, which is won by Zingle ahead of Tanovitchii. The peloton has not gotten any closer over the past ten kilometers.
Another ten kilometers later and the gap is down a little bit, one minute exactly. Bratashcuk got into trouble and was caught by the peloton, with a lot of teams sticking out a hand in chasing the four leaders down: Grieg, Evonik, Moser, Aegon, Bennelong and Meiji.
It would take till roughly eight kilometers before the four were caught. The peloton still consists of 108 riders, with Gaviria and Reimer as most notable sprinters. Only they are at the back of the group, so we'll see a similar scenario to the first stage with the puncheurs sprinting.
Or maybe not since Van Garderen, who won that sprint, attacks under the 5k banner. An alliance is formed between Mohoric, Skujins, Kinoshita, Bobridge and Ulissi to chase him down.
The alliance gets to his wheel but so does the rest. One giant line of riders behind each other as if they were to from the world's longest sprint train.
A long line turns into another long line but in the other direction, as the riders spread out over the road. Lutsenko, Gaday, Ulissi, Bobridge, Mohoric, Van Garderen, Kinoshita and Skujins on the front row. Gaviria also managed to find his way forward, but does he have enough time to get to the real front?
One kilometer remaining and Gaday does his best to give Lutsenko a lead-out. Gaviria is too late to get involved for the stage win. Mosca moving forward in the middle, Thurau finds his way between Kinoshita and Skujins with De Bie on his wheel. Flügel also finding his way through.
500 meters and it looks to be a battle between Lutsenko and Van Garderen. Gaviria coming fast and also Alaphilippe still in the group, throwing in a sprint.
But Tejay Van Garderen takes his seconds stage win in the race, again from a bunch sprint. Maybe he should consider a career switch? Second place for Lutsenko, who had the best lead-out but could not match the American's pace.
Very close finish for third, but it's Kinoshita ahead of Flügel, Schreurs and Mohoric. Gaviria with a respectable seventh place in a hilly stage, what would've been if he hadn't been so far back in the beginning. Ulissi, Bobridge and Gaday complete the top ten. Only a bike length seperating third and fifteenth place.
Skujins remains GC leader, though Lutsenko now up to third in the same time as second-placed Bobridge. Van Garderen back to eighth due to bonus seconds. He also extends his lead in the points classification.
