The 9th stage is for the allrounders but includes two long Cat.1 mountains and isn`t the typical puncheur stage. Though with the difficulties at half time and then two shorter climbs towards the end, some strong puncheurs belong to the top favourites.
Demare and Costa must be named even though Guldhammer, Preidler, Morton, Machado & co. might be better suited, while pure climbers such as Cattaneo, Henao Montoya, Abal have yet another day in the saddle of fighting to avoid a time loss on unpopular terrain.
4 riders in the breakaway including KoM leader Vosekalns, who sees a great opportunity to gain big points today.
The others are
Lindgren
Veyhe
Van Winden
Surprisingly weak uphill riders alongside the Evonik leader.
Olsson joining a bit later as 2nd Grieg rider while Le Roux is still a bit behind but also able to join. Both are decent puncheurs.
Vosekalns still the dominant rider here being best on long climbs and also best on the hills. Combined this makes him winning the first Cat.1 easily.
Le Roux, Olsson and Veyhe next while Lindgren and Van Winden are dropped already.
The situation is basically same on the next Cat.1 Olsson 2nd ahead of Le Roux while the 5th rider over the top is already Ivars working for Amador and Morton with 2 small points as 7th. So only 4 break riders in front at that point.
And also those 4 are all solo!
Vosekalns leading with a 2min gap over Olsson. Then 30s later Le Roux and another 50s for Veyhe.
The peloton of 120 riders is 5min behind the Evonik climber.
Gazelle with lots of riders for Bibby/Formolo today?
Puma surely for Demare and eBuddy for Dombrowski are chasing.
UBS has done a lot of work so far and is having a rest at the moment.
On uphill sections the pace is always getting lower. Most likely Puma is not going too fast as Demare has more problems as he would like.
Bennelong - Mitchelton immediately reacts seeing Vosekalns as last leader is still having 2'40 with 36km to go.
Canty and Baily immediately move up and accelerate for Morton. Amador, Schleck and others right behind them.
Still Vosekalns was able to extend his gap a bit more on that Cat.2 and the peloton would need more and stronger riders to chase if they want the stage. KoM wise the Latvian already moves himself into a great position with 74 points by now. More than twice as much as the next.
And still the gap went down heavily after the climb. It was a long solo and too much for another climb. Just 20km later the gap of almost 4min was gone and Dion Smith is now passing him. The final Cat.3 as last difficulty ahead.
And immediately some GC riders with an attack.
Dombrowski initiating and immediately followed by Schleck, Amador, Machado, Lecuisinier, Hirt and Guldhammer.
Behind them Formolo, Morton, Henao Montoya, Dekker, Abal, Bibby, Quintana, Nibali, Alarcon, Felline, Bongiorno, Cattaneo and Cort Nielsen immediately react and higher the pace!
Demare also within the first 30 positions then.
Still those first 7 have opened a gap and behind only 42 riders in the "peloton".
Being dropped are Navardauskas, Kirsch, Vosecalns, Fraile, Oss, Wisniowski as biggest names.
Morton makes it to the first group and this also made the next group split into two.
Next to those 12 listed in the chasing group it`s Bongiorno and Cort Nielsen with them.
The 3rd group then around Demare, who has lost contact as also Kolesnikov or pre-stage favourite Preidler and Costa.
Foromolo, Henao Montoya and Dekker mainly worked well together and makes it a top group of 22 riders after closing the gap.
They are 47s ahead of the Demare group with just 5,4km to go.
But again a split in the group with now 11 riders in front followed by 12 with additionally Preidler having been able to find contact. Though the gap to Demare is down to 25s as well.
While most big GC names are in the leading group, one name surprisingly is missing: Morton not having his best day and is in the "weaker" puncheur GC group around Abal, Henao, Nibali, Quintana, Cattaneo.
Therefore now in the first group Dekker, Bibby and Alarcon, who missed the first split.
Formolo dropped back to group 2 and can`t help his leader Bibby, who is now leading out the sprint for the stage win with Lecuisinier, Amador and Dekker right behind.
And it`s still just 22s to the next group where Morton alone is working.
Then already 56s to Demare and others.
700m mark and still the same scenario. Bibby surely will run out of energy soon and Lecuisinier, Amador, Schleck, Guldhammer in the perfect position with Alarcon and Machado struggling at the very end.
The gap is up to 33s.
Lecuisinier is looking strongest right now as he passes the Gazelle rider.
Also Guldhammer is fast and passed Dekker already with Amador just ahead.
Hirt also showing up now with Schleck and Dombrowski in the slipstream but it`s just 200m to go.
Guldhammer in 2nd could be the only threat for Lecuisinier.
But too late. 1m after the line, the Dane would have celebrated a 2nd stage win. But the French did pass the line first and is todays winner.
Hirt as 3rd ahead of Schleck on the left side with Dombrowski and Amador next. Bibby down to 7th with his early move ahead of Alarcon. Dekker down to 9th in the end ahead of Machado, who kept contact.
Abal leads in the next group 41s later. Biggest loser surely Morton today, who is losing a spot to Dombrowski and time in general.
Kolesnikov with a special mention as he was able to make contact with that group and even sprinted to 2nd behind Abal in this one.
Group Demare in the end another minute behind with some support riders such as Chamorro, Ricco, Aru, Teklehaimanot etc.
