Vuelta a España - Stage 15
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-000.jpg

The race enters its last week, and it does it with the final stage that sprinters can contest in this race. But it’s not an easy stage for them, so a breakaway could go all the way. 50 kms away from the finish line in Castelldefels there’s a Cat. 1 climb, Alto del Rat Penat, which could help the breakaway, as sprinter’s teams should go slower if they want the sprinter to stay in the group after the climb. Maybe an interesting tactic choice for a team like Vesuvio.

´
Looks like there are very few riders interested that this stage doesn’t end up in a mass sprint, as only 5 riders form today’s breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane wins with easy the 10 points available in the first climb of the day, showing his strenght to the rest of the group. With Marcos being only 2 points away from the KoM lead, this stage was an obvious target for him, and he’ll be back into the Blue Dot jersey at the end of the stage if he gets to score too in Rat Penat, as now, he’s tied to Galta and Alarcon in the lead with 31 points

Right before starting Alto del Rat Penat, the race goes through Castelldefels by a first time before the finish. At this point, the breakaway has a 3-minute gap over the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-004.jpg

Two kms into this climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Marcos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hosek have been dropped, and Reguigui is starting to struggle to keep this high effort for long. In the peloton, the sprinter teams have stepped aside, and it’s Gazelle setting the pace in this climb, which could clearly help the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane will be first too in this climb, rising his total points in the KoM standings to 26. Ghani follows him at a short distance, with Reguigui a bit further behind. And the bunch will reach the summit with a deficit of almost 6 minutes, so definitely a chance for these three riders to win the stage today

And the effects of the climbs are clearly visible in the bunch, as there’s no more a big bunch, instead it’s like 4-5 small groups of riders

In Group 1 we have the full GC Top10, but no other rider inside the Top27 in GC. About the sprinters, all the main sprinters are in this group, with Coquard, Swift, Howard, Van der Lijke, Stallaert, Zabel, Enger and Samolenkov here

In Group 2 we have those from 11th to 27th in GC, and Soupe of the sprinters

In group 3 there are only some domestiques

In group 4 we have riders like Carapaz, Vinhas, and a big sprinter like Kennaugh and Maksimov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-007.jpg

A few kms later the first two groups joined to form a bigger one of around 75 riders, while Reguigui and Marcos had been caught by the bunch with 20 kms to go

In front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane attacked Ghani and Hosek, knowing that the peloton was coming really only one minute behind

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-008.jpg

With 12 kms to go the sprinter teams seems to have run out of riders to pull from the group, and the gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane starts to grow. Tinkoff and Gazelle are in front now, seeing that some climbers are struggling in the back of the group, like Alarcon, Galta or Eastman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-009.jpg

Just 5 kms for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane, who holds a gap of 1 minute over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hosek, and almost 1’30 over the bunch, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Kozhatayev is working for Zabel now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-010.jpg

Ghani is caught and Hosek is about to with 4 kms to go, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Calmejane looks to have the stage settled, with a 1’10 gap right now. The GC riders are ahead of the sprinters, and Phinney should be really looking forward to this sprint, as it’s likely that the pure sprinters will struggle, and the American could retake the GC lead through bonus seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Enger launch their sprints from a very very long distance, as it’s their only chance to catch a rider like Calmejane that is now passing through the “Green Kit”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift has pulled away from everyone else, as Howard and Enger can’t keep sprinting anymore, so behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Phinney are actually sprinting for bonus seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-013.jpg

It was obviously too late for the sprinters and GC riders, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lilian Calmejane gets the win in Castelldefels!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-014.jpg

Swift still has a gap with 600 metres to go to finish second confortably, but Howard is now being passed by Martin, Herklotz and Phinney, who are the three riders fighting for the third place now. But behind them, Borges and Becis are coming way faster, same as Bol

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-015.jpg

Second place in the stage for Swift, who gets a fifth stage podium in the race, in a race that didn’t go as planned for him, despite the 3 stage wins and the day in the lead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-016.jpg

And it’s Borges stealing the third place and the bonus seconds from Herklotz’s hands in the final 100 metres! Becis takes fifth ahead of Martin and Phinney, with Bol, Arndt and Barguil ahead of Madrazo completing the Top10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/GTM/Vuelta/VAE-15-017.jpg

At the end, thankfully for some riders, there are no gaps between the 70 riders that finished in the first group.

About the sprinters apart from Swift...not so great results, clearly they are too much wear down after several mountain stages to be competitive in a stage so hard like this one. Howard 14th, Enger 18th, with the rest not even able to sprint

Great win for Calmejane, who adds this win to his stage win in Paris - Nice earlier in the season, also from a breakaway in a similar stage. The Frenchman is developing into a great stage hunter
