Will it be the GC deciding stage? Surely looks hardest on the paper with 3 long climbs on the second half!
Dombrowski is the one in need to gain a lot of time here as best climber but sitting behind Sicard after the first two GC stages and also behind Beltran and GC leader Boily, who played out their hill advantage on day 2 and there is another hill to come in two days!
10 riders make it into the breakaway and two of them clearly aim for the KoM and obviously the stage win!
Velits (30 points) as 2nd in the KoM ranking but only 21st in the GC and KoM leader Bonnin (31 points).
Garby actually was in the first attempt as well but didn`t make it into attempt no.2. It`s Öste-Macdonald for Carlsberg and famous brekaway rider Dall'Oste for Lierse.
The others are
Kumara
McCutcheon
Pirazzi
De Vos
It`s only the first mountain, which is the steepest though and the break splits into pieces.
Velits the strongest, going solo with 1,4km to the top.
Behind only Bonnin, Dall'Oste, Öste Macdonald, Pirazzi and De Vos are left with McCutcheon soon to be caught, which already happened to the others!
The peloton is 3'20 behind, not allowing too much of a gap.
At the top Bonnin comes over the line in 2nd, which means, Velits is virtually leading now with 3 points.
2nd Cat.1 and some riders attack early, which is understandable as the must put pressure on Boily or Beltran.
It`s Dombrowski though and this should put pressure on basically any GC rider right now.
He is joined by Marquez and Yates while Kudus attacks behind trying to bridge to them.
In the group of just 39 riders it`s Beltran, Sicard, Wellens, Talansky, Hirt in the first positions.
Then Preidler, Chaves, Nibali, Garby, Schelling, Boily, Bennett, Senni and Penasa next.
Boily really doesn`t look good with 29km still to go. He is trying to follow the others but not only to Dombrowski, also to the riders in front small gaps are opening.
At the top Velits again takes 4 more points than Bonnin extending his KoM lead. Pirazzi as last breakaway rider coming over the line in 3rd and then already Dombrowski, Marquez, Yates with Kudus back in the Sicard group.
Dombrowski is solo now around 2min behind Velits as last rider from the break.
Yates is no longer able to keep contact with the US rider. Meanwhile Kudus with the next attempt to bridge to them. Sicard under pressure now as the gap to Dombrowski is almost 2min now.
Over the Cat.3 he attacks to not lose everything today. He quickly is up to Kudus/Bonnin which is good news for him as they all have interest to chase.
Though instead of making it up to Dombrowski, they are caught by the peloton again! Ji is not riding for his own GC but instead is chasing hard for GC leader Boily. Great team work.
Yates is 30s ahead, Dombrowski another 75s and Velits additionally 50s.
6km and Yates must realize that going with Dombrowski might have been an mistake as he is exhausted now and caught by the pack.
It`s the moment where Hirt attacks and Kudus/ Sicard follow. Also Beltran and Wellens are trying with Ji again chasing.
Dombrowski catches Velits with 4km to go. Behind only Hirt has opened a gap as the other two obviously couldn`t follow him after the earlier attacks or in case of Beltran/Wellens weren`t strong enough.
Those accelerations though splits the favourite group into two halfs and Boily finds himself in the later group. Good for him that Ji is with him and chasing.
Also Bennett got dropped not able to follow and while Yates is still in group 1, he is in the very last position not looking good and similar can be said about Garby, who also struggles.
Strong ride by Hirt who is up to Dombrowski/Velits. Surely the pace in front wasn`t as high as before but still. That`s 80s gap to the Sicard group with 2km to go.
And also the 13 rider group splits again.
Sicard, Wellens, Kudus, Nibali, Schelling and a very strong Preidler being the first 6 followed by Beltran, Penasa, Talansky, De la Cruz, Garby, Marquez.
Yates being 40s behind them and almost caught by the Boily group.
Final kilometer and Dombrowski, Hirt, Velits will fight for the stage.
Behind Schelling leads the group Sicard where Wellens and Nibali got dropped.
And also Preidler is losing contact now but still a very impressive climb by him.
Velits can`t follow. 300m and it`s Dombrowski vs. Hirt.
And the favourite wins. Great win for Dombrowski but now the wait begins until Sicard, Beltran, Boily are in to see how the GC changed.
Velits at 24s comes in 3rd.
Schelling also very impressive today being solo in 4th at 37s!
This means he dropped Sicard and Kudus! Both arrive with 50s. This means he will drop behind Dombrowski being +46s and actually equal time as Hirt now!
Wellens at 1'09 a bit ahead of Nibali, Marquez and Penasa and also De la Cruz did well today at 1'36 which means he was ahead of Beltran/Talansky/Brenes/Garby at 2'05!
Senni leads over the Maillot Jaune group. He was 2'31 already and there were small gaps. Yates 2'45, Bennett 3'03 and Boily is counted at 3'11 just like Chaves.
That`s the GC lead for Dombrowski with Boily dropping to 7th and Beltran to 9th.
In between Schelling up to 4th ahead of Kudus and Preidler as best combo puncheur/climber and Wellens as 8th.
Velits up to 12th and the KoM lead.
