Final three stages of La Vuelta and the race enters Catalunya for its final hilly stage. Or at least that’s what the organisers says about the stage, because while being a one-climb stage, that climb being the stage finish and being quite hard and long could be a stage for the GC riders, instead of what happened in S1, when an actual puncheur won with Bruno Borges taking the honours that day.
But we are coming from 3 consecutive wins of Silvio Herklotz, who has completely dominated the race since the mountain started, winning 5 of the last 7 stages, and holding a lead of 42 seconds over Taylor Phinney and more than 2 minutes over Angel Madrazo
Six riders would from the breakaway, with Galta the only one being there from the few KoM point available during the stage. He’s 38 points behind the KoM leader, and seeing that he’s weaker than Alarcon in the mountains, he’s trying to make up points in a stage like this one.
The other riders are Bartl, Majka, Vosekalns, Smith and Kirsch
Galta would take the first climb uncontested, but that was only 5 points for him
Manresa - Cat.4
And things would get worse for him when the bunch caught the breakaway with still 40 kms left in the stage. Grieg and Puma had been setting a very high pace in the bumpy terrain that leads to the only climb of the day, Espinalbet, hoping that Dan Martin can finally get a stage win in the race, or that Herklotz wins a fourth consecutive day
The high lateral/head-wind that the riders are suffering now it’s only helping those teams that try to set a high pace now, as the bunch gets reduced to around 120 riders before even starting the short climb before Espinalbet
In that little climb nothing happened, with Puma and Grieg leading the group up that climb. The GC riders are already well placed in the first 20 places
Final 9 kms of the stage, and in that corner the climb to Espinalbet starts. Nerz leads the bunch, knowing that Herklotz is in the first places, and that Phinney is very bad placed, around place 30 in the bunch
With 6 kms left, Nerz has still something left in the tank, and Herklotz is now on his wheel. Madrazo hadn’t lost the German’s wheel until now, when a Kunshin got in the way. Phinney is behind Madrazo, with Martin, Kritskiy, Tenorio around him
With less than 5 kms to go Kritskiy tries to accelerate, but it looks rather ridiculous, as Arndt doesn’t have to get out the saddle to control the move. Martin and Tenorio had followed the Russian rider, with Cattaneo and Abal trying to get in the move too
Tenorio with the counterattack once Kritskiy is too tired to continue attacking. Only 15 riders remain in the first group, with big riders missing like Barguil, Intxausti, Uran, Schelling or Eastman
With less than 2 kms to go, the leading group can already see the finish, and all seem to be preparing for the sprint that will decide the stage winner. Phinney has been riding very conservative today, not exposing himself to the wind
Abal and Tenorio are starting to struggle despite being in the first places, and with Martin not looking like having a good speed today, the stage seems to be between the 3 riders that have dominated the race in the mountains so far; Madrazo, Herklotz and Phinney.
Behind those 6 riders, it looks like a gap might be opened to Cattaneo, Kritskiy, Alarcon, Marquez, Olivier and Keinath, while Haig and Uran are some seconds behind that group
With 600 metres Madrazo is back on the saddle! This could be the end of his stage wins hopes, and the start of the fourth consecutive win for Herklotz, as only Phinney could stop the German rider from doing it
All three are now sprinting and surprisingly, with 300 metres to go, it’s still Madrazo with a very slim lead over Herklotz. Phinney seems to be blocked by Madrazo, but neither he’s coming with a greater speed
A photo-finish was needed to determine the winner here in Espinalbet, but it’s Angel Madrazo who takes the win today! Probably in the least expected stage, but Madrazo finally gets a stage win in this race and breaks Herklotz dominance.
Phinney in third sees his gap with Herklotz increased in 4 seconds ahead of the final two mountain stages
+11 for Tenorio, Martin and Abal, who couldn’t stay with the three best riders of the race, but get great stage results, specially Abal, who heavily overperformed today
+ 26 for Alarcon, Marquez and Keinath, so all will be gaining places in GC today
+ 44 for Cattaneo, Kritskiy, Olivier and Uran. The Russian loses half a minute with Martin in the battle for the fourth place, and Olivier rises to 15th in GC. Haig arrives a few seconds later
A bad day for Intxausti and Barguil, who both lost 1’55
Second stage win for a Spanish rider in the race, after Marquez won in Lujar 6 days ago. Can this win give Madrazo enough confidence to overcome the 2-minute deficit he has with Herklotz in the final two mountain stages?
