Stage 4
The second flat stage is another opportunity for sprinters to shine. It’s pretty long, once again, and we have a circuit with a small hill that is crossed four times on the way to the finish line. But it’s not very steep or long, so we don’t expect it to have much of an impact.
No clear breakaway has formed ahead of the first intermediate sprint yet, although many riders have tried. Nonaka leads a group of four with Smit, Robov and Nareklishvili as they cross the line, but the peloton is close behind. All of them are more then five minutes behind in the GC, so no one sprints for any bonus seconds.
After a long struggle and kilometres with an advance of just 20 seconds, the pack finally relents and the quartet establishes a lead of more than five minutes. The two next intermediate sprints pass by uncontested:
1. Nareklishvili
2. Nonaka
3. Smit
1. Nareklishvili
2. Nonaka
3. Robov
As we’ve seen on stage two, it’s mostly three teams doing the work at the front of the peloton: Berg Cycles, Air France - KLM and Andorra.
Their efforts materialise in two ways: The escapees are only about a minute ahead with still over 20 kms to go, and a split occurs towards the back of the peloton. About 30 riders are in the latter group, including crucial sprint helpers Colbrelli, Kreder, Avila and Kvist. The peloton would eventually reunite, but it’s a big task for these riders to get back to the front and still have energy to support their leaders.
The mountain sprint goes uncontestedly to Smit ahead of Robov and Nonaka.
The escapees are caught with 8 kilometres to go just atop the final „climb“, after an exhausting chase.
That small ascent leads to another gap, this time with only 68 riders ahead. The yellow jersey of Kadri is on the wrong side of it, as are most of the names referenced above, this time also including Keukeleire, who’s having another terrible day, and Yates.
Meanwhile, sprint preperations begin at the head of the pack. You can easily spot Kip’s big body towards the front. He is following Kennaugh, who is without help at his position, but Bernaudeau and Hagen (in green) make their way to the front in a bid to support him.
Behind Kip, we have a long line of the usual suspects: Nizzolo, Willwohl, Appollonio, Petit, Reimer, Drapac and Page. Silvestre, winner of stage 2, is pretty far behind in about 30th position. It’s not impossible for him to come back, but it’s going to be tough. 6kms to go.
Hagen managed to get ahead of Kennaugh, while Roglic did a phenomenal job once again of bringing Silvestre in position. A few of the riders at the tail end of the aforementioned row of sprinters need to be careful not to get caught up in the rest of the peloton as the pace is slowing down.
Bernaudeau opens the sprint with Hagen and Kennaugh side by side behind him. Willwohl is in a great position right behind them.
Roglic leads Silvestre on the other side of the road. From left to right, it’s Page, Kip, Nizzolo and Lutsenko behind them.
Appollonio, Petit and Drapac try to get up to speed behind them, Reimer is way back.
Hagen has taken over and we now have two clear lines: Willwohl, Nizzolo and Lutsenko to the left behind Kennaugh;
Page, Kip, Petit, Drapac and Appollonio behind Silvestre.
Roglic slowed down quickly and the riders behind him reacted late as the left train takes a big lead. At the bottom of the screen, Reimer tries to make his way back up with Kirsch.
Hagen is cooked and Willwohl takes the opportunity to sprint past Kennaugh. Silvestre and Drapac are actually faster now coming from behind, but they’ve been in the wind for a bit already.
Silvestre dashes past everyone and is still the fastest while everyone else on the left side of the road slows down drastically as we hit a small slope of 2%. Petit and Page are the fastest on the right.
Silvestre has a commanding lead and looks set to take another win. Petit is still in second position but Appollonio and Kip make up ground. Reimer comes from behind, trying to make it to the Top 10 still.
Silvestre takes it and Petit hangs on to make it the same 1-2 as on stage 2!
Kip just barely holds off Page to take the final podium place. Appollonio outsprints Kennaugh for fifth.
Drapac, Willwohl, a surprising Lutsenko and Nizzolo finish next in the Top 10 ahead of Reimer and Hagen, who collects another few points for the green jersey, but not enough as he relinquishes it to today’s winner Silvestre.
Despite the peloton fracturing in a few places, no time gaps are awarded, as expected. No changes in the GC.
