Stage 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/00.jpg

The second flat stage is another opportunity for sprinters to shine. It’s pretty long, once again, and we have a circuit with a small hill that is crossed four times on the way to the finish line. But it’s not very steep or long, so we don’t expect it to have much of an impact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/02.jpg

No clear breakaway has formed ahead of the first intermediate sprint yet, although many riders have tried. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka leads a group of four with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili as they cross the line, but the peloton is close behind. All of them are more then five minutes behind in the GC, so no one sprints for any bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/03.jpg

After a long struggle and kilometres with an advance of just 20 seconds, the pack finally relents and the quartet establishes a lead of more than five minutes. The two next intermediate sprints pass by uncontested:

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/04.jpg

As we’ve seen on stage two, it’s mostly three teams doing the work at the front of the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Berg Cycles, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Air France - KLM and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Andorra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/06.jpg

Their efforts materialise in two ways: The escapees are only about a minute ahead with still over 20 kms to go, and a split occurs towards the back of the peloton. About 30 riders are in the latter group, including crucial sprint helpers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Avila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kvist. The peloton would eventually reunite, but it’s a big task for these riders to get back to the front and still have energy to support their leaders.

The mountain sprint goes uncontestedly to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Nonaka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/07.jpg

The escapees are caught with 8 kilometres to go just atop the final „climb“, after an exhausting chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/08.jpg

That small ascent leads to another gap, this time with only 68 riders ahead. The yellow jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is on the wrong side of it, as are most of the names referenced above, this time also including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire, who’s having another terrible day, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/09.jpg

Meanwhile, sprint preperations begin at the head of the pack. You can easily spot pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip’s big body towards the front. He is following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, who is without help at his position, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Bernaudeau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen (in green) make their way to the front in a bid to support him.

Behind Kip, we have a long line of the usual suspects: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Page. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre, winner of stage 2, is pretty far behind in about 30th position. It’s not impossible for him to come back, but it’s going to be tough. 6kms to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen managed to get ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic did a phenomenal job once again of bringing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre in position. A few of the riders at the tail end of the aforementioned row of sprinters need to be careful not to get caught up in the rest of the peloton as the pace is slowing down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Bernaudeau opens the sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh side by side behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl is in a great position right behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre on the other side of the road. From left to right, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Page, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac try to get up to speed behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer is way back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen has taken over and we now have two clear lines: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko to the left behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh;

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Page, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic slowed down quickly and the riders behind him reacted late as the left train takes a big lead. At the bottom of the screen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer tries to make his way back up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen is cooked and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl takes the opportunity to sprint past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac are actually faster now coming from behind, but they’ve been in the wind for a bit already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre dashes past everyone and is still the fastest while everyone else on the left side of the road slows down drastically as we hit a small slope of 2%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Page are the fastest on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre has a commanding lead and looks set to take another win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit is still in second position but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip make up ground. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer comes from behind, trying to make it to the Top 10 still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre takes it and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit hangs on to make it the same 1-2 as on stage 2!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip just barely holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Page to take the final podium place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh for fifth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl, a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo finish next in the Top 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen, who collects another few points for the green jersey, but not enough as he relinquishes it to today’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E4/20.jpg

Despite the peloton fracturing in a few places, no time gaps are awarded, as expected. No changes in the GC.
