Tour of Cyprus - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/profile.jpg

The first stage is a flat stage, from Nea Dimmata along the coast to Larnaca. There is a climb but too early to drop the sprinters. The weather reports predict no rain though a fair bit of wind, maybe we are treated with some echelons if we're lucky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/01.jpg

An early intermediate sprint in the city of Polis, seven kilometer into the stage. No attempt was made at a breakaway and the sprinters duked it out for the bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek wins ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fox.png Korzh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt. The others who tried were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/wcc.png Angarita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Dockx.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/02.jpg

After the intermediate sprint we start climbing the Kathikas. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Umerbekov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde are the first three up the road. An odd move from Vanoverschelde as he is one of the stage favorites in the sprint. Behind we can see a couple of counter-attacks, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Yang, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Zakaria, then the quartet of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Malecki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Lau, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ros.png Lei and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Savini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/03.jpg

Four kilometer to the top. Umerbekov rides away from Grippo and Vanoverschelde, the latter even dropping back to the peloton. Lau is closing in, Savini, Malecki and Yang could also take points as they overtook Grippo who is really struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/04.jpg

The order at the top of the category two climb is Lau, Umerbekov, Malecki, Savini, Yang. Since it is the only mountain sprint of the day, Lau leads the classification. Grippo is still ahead of the peloton, but Zakaria is caught. The peloton would cross the top without casualties.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/05.jpg

Grippo makes it back to the others, and no other rider attacked, hence we have a total of six riders in the breakaway. They would receive a lead of four minutes tops. Two riders from Eddie Stobart and KazMunayGas, one from Kulczyk and Netia.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/06.jpg

Umerbekov with his revenge at the intermediate sprint, taking the points and bonus seconds in front of Lau and Grippo. The gap with 127 kilometer to go is 3'40.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/07.jpg

UBS, Berg and Swisslion are the teams working at the front, for their candidates for victory today: Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and Ciolek. The riders who lead at the moment are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Petrovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/08.jpg

Second sprint victory for Umerbekov, ahead of Malecki and Grippo. The lead has gone down to 2'53, but with 62 kilometer to go the catch is not anytime soon. The riders follow the coastline from Limassol to Larnaca.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/09.jpg

Wind speeds have reached up to 50 km/h, a necessary component for echelons. Swisslion, Berg and Campari seem to give it go. The gap to the break is coming down rapidly because of the increased pace, now 1'40 with 41 kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/10.jpg

UBS (in the person of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Abreu), joins the fun and look at the carnage behind. This is hardly a peloton working together but rather small factions. Reinhardt, Ciolek and Kupfernagel amongst the front positions as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Valls and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bennett. Some other favorites are shattered amongst the small groups behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/11.jpg

One of those riders is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran, whose team is even responsible for creating the echelons. He is in the third peloton with a negligible gap to the second peloton which still has to be closed though. The first peloton now has a nice gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/12.jpg

The gap between the two pelotons with 22 kilometer to go is 1'30. Beltran now in the second group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schelling, whose team was also responsible for the splits. Other notable riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Borisavljevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Tleubayev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Scarponi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Meyer. The first peloton is led by Fox News, Berg, ENI, and both UBS and Swisslion despite having their GC leader behind. Rather rigorous to sacrifice the GC leader on day one in favor of a possible sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/13.jpg

Under twenty kilometer and the lead for the breakaway has gone down to one minute, and also the number of rider has gone down by one as Savini is dropped. Another split in the first peloton, if we could even call it a peloton by now. 17 riders in front by a quick count.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/14.jpg

Massive effort from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Riabushenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Hardy to get the second group back to the first echelon. 17k to go, we head land inward so likely no more splits and the break is soon to be caught, Savini already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/15.jpg

Beltran also very close to returning, a few meters separating himself from the back of the group. He still has to fight his way forward for more safety, but he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Kasa and Petrovski dropping back to help him. Schelling, Penasa and Borisavljevic still in the second peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/16.jpg

Ten kilometer and the breakaway still holds 47 seconds, the helpers spent their energy creating echelons instead of chasing the breakaway. The peloton is also increasing in size again, Beltran is back as is Borisavljevic. Schelling and Penasa still in the second group at one minute now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/17.jpg

Juul-Jensen, back from behind, will lead out Appollonio. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Bercz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Schorn behind them for Carrefour. Somehow these four manage to ride away from the peloton, and the other sprinters are not panicking. The echelons has also taken a toll on any lead-out, who have no energy left for their main task.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/18.jpg

This sort of attack was not intentional and they didn't have the numbers to continue, the peloton came back together with five kilometer to go. However, the lead for the breakaway has increased to 1'07 which makes it look ever likely that the winner is amongst the front five. World Cycling Centre makes a sprint train for Angarita, UBS for Reinhardt, Fox News for Korzh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/19.jpg

This is the sprint for the win then, within the final two kilometer they still lead by over a minute. Grippo leads the way ahead of Lau, Umerbekov, Malecki and Yang. KazMunayGas has two riders, which they could use to their advantage by having one lead out the other.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/20.jpg

Umerbekov won both intermediate sprints, thus everyone waits until he launches. When he does, Lau and Malecki follow, Grippo does nothing and Yang lets his teammate having the honurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/21.jpg

300 meters to go and the Kazakh maintains his lead and looks likely to win. Malecki and Lau to battle for second place unless a major implosion from Umerbekov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/22.jpg

That implosion never came, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Nikita Umerbekov wins the first stage in Larnaca and takes both the GC and points lead as well.

Second place for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Lau who is the best young rider and the leader in the mountains classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Malecki with the final spot on the podium.

Yang fourth in the same time, Grippo fifth at 24 seconds. KazMunayGas with two riders in the break leading the teams classification, an incredible achievement for an amateur team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/23.jpg

Vanoverschelde wins the sprint for sixth place, and he was in the breakaway very early in the stage as well! The best rider who hasn't been in the breakaway is Ciolek who finishes seventh ahead of Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto and Angarita. Some sprinters didn't even bother anymore after it became clear the break had won. The time deficit is 1'14.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S1/24.jpg

Penasa with a last-ditch effort has made it back to the peloton but only just. He will be given the same time as those ahead of him, 135 riders to be precise. Schelling on the other hand did lose time, 3'08 to Umerbekov so roughly two minutes to the other favorites. A painful, partly self-inflicted loss for UBS, who are now forced into the offensive on the mountain stage.
