Stage 3
After a time trial and a flat stage, we’re in the hills now. Since we’ve seen climbers do very well in hilly stages lately, the favorites for today include most of the GC favorites outlined in the preview but there are still some specialists that deserve mention for both today and tomorrow. They include, but aren’t necessary limited to:
HI MO RS AC DH Yates79 70 70 80 64 Juul-Jensen78 70 74 79 69 Caruso78 69 71 77 77 Calmejane77 71 76 76 70 Reichenbach79 73 69 69 67 Zakarin77 73 73 73 70 Serry78 75 70 69 66 Klemme79 73 69 65 61
As you can see, one of these riders is our overall leader in Lilian Calmejane. Can he hang on to the yellow jersey or is one of the GC favorites going to take charge of it already? And who’ll be in the breakaway fighting for the most mountain points? Let’s find out:
The opening kilometers of this stage were pretty wild. Every team seemed to want a rider, or sometimes two or three, in the breakaway. Yesterday’s runner-up Pibernik was the first to kick things off.
At the intermediate sprint, a group of nine has formed around him at the very front of the race. Destribois leads them over the line in front of McConvey and Ivanov.
The group also includes prestage co-favorite Klemme, which is a surprising move. The other riders are Rolland, Kratochvila, Newton and Henao. They lead the pack by a bit more than a minute with another 8 riders in between. We’ll come back when things (hopefully) are a bit more settled.
After the riders in between were caught, the group of nine were let go. But on the first climb already, a few riders lose contact. Newton, Ivanov, Rolland, Kratochvila, Klemme and McConvey cross the summit together, in that order, with almost three minutes on the peloton. It’s possible that the other three can make it back on the descent, though.
But it’s still the same six over the second climb. Henao and Pibernik have even been caught be the pack already, while Destribois is still hanging on in between. Surprisingly, these mountain sprints aren’t contested at all. We’re going to have a mid-race summary of all the points so far at a later point. Gap to the peloton: still around three minutes.
Newton is the next to fall back as McConvey collects the maximum amount of points.
The peloton is already down to 86 men. No absolute top riders have fallen behind yet, but a few dropped ones are a bit surprising, like Zaini, Landa and Barrio, all suffering from a lack of resistance.
We’ll also have to have an eye on the time limit, as some prominent riders already are more than 20 minutes down on the leaders. They include Ford, Lutsyshyn and Drapac, who could still play a role in the final time trial and sprint stage, respectively.
More splits in the peloton occur. Caruso gets caught on the wrong side of one along with Ji.
Juul-Jensen is another stage favorite who has to let go of these ambitions. A bit further up the road, we can see the yellow jersey of Lilian Calmejane fighting to stay in the group as more and more riders get dropped.
Which he eventually fails to do. It’s a brutal pace that leaves only 26 riders in the peloton. The yellow jersey group now also includes a few high-level domestiques like Carapaz, Pantano Gomez and Scarponi, but all A-Tier GC riders are still at the front. Ji also made it back there.
Kratochvila leads the remaining five escapees over the line atop the summit, but the peloton is coming closer and closer. After four of six climbs, this is the provisional mountain classification:
Over the last Cat-1-Climb of the day, Rolland gets a firm grip of the mountain classification as he collects another 16 points. The peloton is just about to catch them.
20 kilometres left to go and we have the big guns at the front! Pluchkin and Amador are taking turns and increasing the pace.
And after Rolland is the final escapee to be reeled in, they go on the offensive and attack! We’re about three kilometres from the final categorized summit of the day. Meintjes is the first to counter!
In addition to Pluchkin and Amador and Meintjes, it’s Warbasse who crosses the summit at the front, a bit of a surprise!
40 seconds behind them, we have another group of four consisting of Bennett, Penasa, Choi and his teammate Pomoshnikov.
Another 40 seconds or so behind is this group of 8 that includes Berhane, Chiarello, Talansky, Faglum Karlsson, Ranaweera, Bartl, Ji and Ablenado with Slagter trying to catch up. But there’s still one more small climb and a lot of downhill to go.
At said small climb, we have an acceleration by Amador! But the other three react and embark on the final descent together.
Behind them, there’s more action! Choi couldn’t keep up with his companions and as Chiarello attacks from the larger third group on the road, he even falls behind those riders, with Bartl and Ablenado, who can’t follow the acceleration.
Which leaves us with these 8 riders on the downhill towards the finish. Berhane tries to make it a group of nine while Choi is already a minute behind him. But all those are already more than 1’40 behind the leading quartet who will fight for the stage win.
Amador leads Pluchkin into the final kilometer. The Moldovan is the best sprinter in this group but it’s not like any of them are particularly fast.
There’s a bit of a ramp towards the finish line and Pluchkin takes the lead!
But Amador makes the comeback and wins the stage! Pluchkin takes the overall lead, Meintjes finishes third in front of Warbasse, who will nevertheless surely be delighted by today’s outcome.
Bennett leads the chasing group over the finish line 90 seconds later ahead of Talansky and Penasa. Berhane made it back to this group and with Ji also present, ISA is the only team with more than one rider in these Top 13.
Faglum Karlsson takes the lead in the young riders classification and it looks like it will be a duell from here on out with Ranaweera. Chiarello and Pomoshnikov complete the group …
… while the Russian’s supposed captain, Ki Ho Choi, finishes 14th, another almost two minutes behind. Certainly one of the more disappointing performances of today. Bartl and Ablenado are next, then Slagter, who also won’t be happy.
Also not happy: several big name riders who missed the time limit today, and their managers. They includes some of the top sprinters and time trialists including Vanoverschelde, Drapac and Lutsyshyn as well as Viennet, Dillier, Ford and more.
