Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/00.jpg

After a time trial and a flat stage, we’re in the hills now. Since we’ve seen climbers do very well in hilly stages lately, the favorites for today include most of the GC favorites outlined in the preview but there are still some specialists that deserve mention for both today and tomorrow. They include, but aren’t necessary limited to:

HIMORSACDH
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates7970708064
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen7870747969
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Caruso7869717777
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane7771767670
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach7973696967
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin7773737370
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry7875706966
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme7973696561

As you can see, one of these riders is our overall leader in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lilian Calmejane. Can he hang on to the yellow jersey or is one of the GC favorites going to take charge of it already? And who’ll be in the breakaway fighting for the most mountain points? Let’s find out:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/02.jpg

The opening kilometers of this stage were pretty wild. Every team seemed to want a rider, or sometimes two or three, in the breakaway. Yesterday’s runner-up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik was the first to kick things off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/03.jpg

At the intermediate sprint, a group of nine has formed around him at the very front of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Destribois leads them over the line in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png McConvey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov.

The group also includes prestage co-favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme, which is a surprising move. The other riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Newton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Henao. They lead the pack by a bit more than a minute with another 8 riders in between. We’ll come back when things (hopefully) are a bit more settled.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/05.jpg

After the riders in between were caught, the group of nine were let go. But on the first climb already, a few riders lose contact. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Newton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png McConvey cross the summit together, in that order, with almost three minutes on the peloton. It’s possible that the other three can make it back on the descent, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/06.jpg

But it’s still the same six over the second climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Henao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik have even been caught be the pack already, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Destribois is still hanging on in between. Surprisingly, these mountain sprints aren’t contested at all. We’re going to have a mid-race summary of all the points so far at a later point. Gap to the peloton: still around three minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Newton is the next to fall back as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png McConvey collects the maximum amount of points.

The peloton is already down to 86 men. No absolute top riders have fallen behind yet, but a few dropped ones are a bit surprising, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Landa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio, all suffering from a lack of resistance.

We’ll also have to have an eye on the time limit, as some prominent riders already are more than 20 minutes down on the leaders. They include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Ford, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac, who could still play a role in the final time trial and sprint stage, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/09.jpg

More splits in the peloton occur. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Caruso gets caught on the wrong side of one along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Ji.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen is another stage favorite who has to let go of these ambitions. A bit further up the road, we can see the yellow jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lilian Calmejane fighting to stay in the group as more and more riders get dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/12.jpg

Which he eventually fails to do. It’s a brutal pace that leaves only 26 riders in the peloton. The yellow jersey group now also includes a few high-level domestiques like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Pantano Gomez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Scarponi, but all A-Tier GC riders are still at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Ji also made it back there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila leads the remaining five escapees over the line atop the summit, but the peloton is coming closer and closer. After four of six climbs, this is the provisional mountain classification:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/15.jpg

Over the last Cat-1-Climb of the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland gets a firm grip of the mountain classification as he collects another 16 points. The peloton is just about to catch them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/17.jpg

20 kilometres left to go and we have the big guns at the front! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador are taking turns and increasing the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/18.jpg

And after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland is the final escapee to be reeled in, they go on the offensive and attack! We’re about three kilometres from the final categorized summit of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Meintjes is the first to counter!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/19.jpg

In addition to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Meintjes, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse who crosses the summit at the front, a bit of a surprise!

40 seconds behind them, we have another group of four consisting of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Choi and his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Pomoshnikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/20.jpg

Another 40 seconds or so behind is this group of 8 that includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Berhane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Ji and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter trying to catch up. But there’s still one more small climb and a lot of downhill to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/22.jpg

At said small climb, we have an acceleration by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador! But the other three react and embark on the final descent together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/23.jpg

Behind them, there’s more action! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Choi couldn’t keep up with his companions and as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello attacks from the larger third group on the road, he even falls behind those riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado, who can’t follow the acceleration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/24.jpg

Which leaves us with these 8 riders on the downhill towards the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Berhane tries to make it a group of nine while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Choi is already a minute behind him. But all those are already more than 1’40 behind the leading quartet who will fight for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin into the final kilometer. The Moldovan is the best sprinter in this group but it’s not like any of them are particularly fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/26.jpg

There’s a bit of a ramp towards the finish line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin takes the lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/27.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador makes the comeback and wins the stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin takes the overall lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Meintjes finishes third in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, who will nevertheless surely be delighted by today’s outcome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bennett leads the chasing group over the finish line 90 seconds later ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Talansky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Penasa. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Berhane made it back to this group and with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Ji also present, ISA is the only team with more than one rider in these Top 13.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson takes the lead in the young riders classification and it looks like it will be a duell from here on out with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Pomoshnikov complete the group …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E3/29.jpg

… while the Russian’s supposed captain, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Ki Ho Choi, finishes 14th, another almost two minutes behind. Certainly one of the more disappointing performances of today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado are next, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, who also won’t be happy.

Also not happy: several big name riders who missed the time limit today, and their managers. They includes some of the top sprinters and time trialists including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Ford and more.
